Tim Hamner gets to a party thrown by the Sutters and announces that a comet he discovered has been authenticated and named the Hamner-Brown. The "Brown" is a young amateur astronomer who reported his own sighting around the same time as Hamner. Tim explains that he found the comet first but waited to make sure that it really was an undiscovered comet before reporting it.

The next few months, people started to worry that the comet would hit the Earth and some people prepared for an end-of-the-world scenario. Tim soon met Harvey Randall, a documentary film maker who covers the scientific about the Hamner-Brown. Harvey claims to believe the experts who say the chances of a comet strike are almost nonexistent but makes some preparations anyway. When the comet does hit, thieves loot the Randall house, killing Harvey's wife, Loretta, and taking all the supplies Harvey had. Harvey's son, Andy, is in the mountains on a hiking trip with the Randall's neighbor, Gordie Vance. As Harvey is leaving the city with one of his colleagues, Mark Czescu and his girlfriend, Joanne, they run into Gordie's wife and take her with them. …show more content…
Nearby, Arthur Jellison had gathered some supplies for an end of the world fortress. However, Jellison doesn’t have enough that people would have noticed that he's expecting the comet to hit the Earth. While he does turns away many of the people looking for refuge, the group inside bands together. In the Jellison ranch, Jellison’s word is law. It gets to the point where he holds the power to order executions for those group members who hoard supplies rather than sharing them with the entire

Social Imagination

...The Sociological Imagination according to C. Wright Mills is states that the sociological imagination is a quality of mind that allows us to grasp history and biography and the relations between the two in society. (Mills, 1959, pg 6). He also explains the links between personal issues and public issues by helping to identify a personal issue and identifying it in the social structure. One tragic public issue that is very common in society today is ‘Domestic Violence’. For many years domestic violence in the family has been a private issue and was never spoken about in society. By using the three sensibilities that make up the sociological imagination which are the historical, cultural and critical sensibilities, society can begin to understand the radical changes in how society thinks we as individuals ‘should’ behave towards one another especially in the family unit according to societies expectations and social norms. The issue of domestic violence within families was evident in earlier societies. Using the historical sensibility we can see how society used to live and see how we have society has transformed our ideologies of this horrific public issue of domestic violence. From the earliest record, most societies gave the father or the patriarch of the family the right to use physical force against the women and children that he was in control of. This was evident in the reign of Romulus back in 753BC. Abbott (1852, p. 242) states that: The power of the father over his...

But in agriculture, unlike other industries where women were viewed as temporary workers, women’s employment did not end with the war. Instead, the expansion of agriculture and a steady decrease in the number of male farmworkers combined to cause the industry to hire more women in the postwar years...

Saylor URL: http://www.saylor.org/books Saylor.org 1 Preface Competing books are focused on the academic part of HRM, which is necessary in a university or college setting. However, the goal with this book is not only to provide the necessary academic background information but also to present the material with a practitioner’s focus on both large and small businesses. While the writing style is clear and focused, we don’t feel jargon and ten-dollar words are necessary to making a good textbook. Clear and concise language makes the book interesting and understandable (not to mention more fun to read) to the future HRM professional and manager alike. It is highly likely that anyone in business will have to take on an HRM role at some point in their careers. For example, should you decide to start your own business, many of the topics discussed will apply to your business. This is the goal of this book; it is useful enough for the HRM professional, but the information presented is also applicable to managers, supervisors, and entrepreneurs. Besides these differences, other key differences include the following:   This book utilizes a technology focus and shows how HRM activities can be leveraged using technology. We have also included a chapter on communication and information...
