A Closer Look at the Heart
The human body is the world’s greatest inventions. There are many organs, glands, systems and more that contribute to the magnitude of greatness of the body, although the heart can arguably be the most vital and important to the body. The heart is a very intricate organ by the way the organ is structured, what the organ does, how the organ does it, and even the different diseases that can plague the heart. In addition to being most paramount structure in the body, the heart has a vast basis of research that is continually finding new discoveries and technology for it.
Despite being a major contributor to human body functioning giving the heart an extraordinary complexity, if one analyzes different parts of the organ at a time then it gives the organ a more subtle simplicity. The heart has roughly the size of ones fist, giving it a mass between 250 and 350 grams. This organ is situated snugly between the lungs, but it is more orientated to the left lung. “It rests on the superior surface of the diaphragm, the heart lies anterior to the vertebral column and posterior to the sternum” (Marieb). Regardless of all the protection the heart receives from the skeleton surrounding it, the organ also has “double-walled sac called the pericardium” (Marieb). The three major functions of the pericardium is to protect the heart, securing itself to neighboring structures, and lastly to prevent to the heart to over accumulate blood. Deeper into the pericardium, there is a double layer, one is the parietal layer which “attaches to the large arteries exiting the heart, and then turns inferiorly and continues over the external heart surface” (Marieb), and the visceral layer which is the primary part of the heart wall. The heart has is composed of three layers: the epicardium; the myocardium; and the endocardium. The epicardium is the visceral layer. The

Heart Failure Research Paper

...Heart failure occurs when cardiac output is insufficient to effectively perfuse the tissues, despite normal filling of the heart. Usually causes include hypertension, cardiomyopathy, and coronary heart disease. In heart failure, the increase in the resistance against which the heart pumps (afterload) further depresses cardiac output. A reduced renal blood flow induces renin secretion and increased plasma aldosterone and angiotensin concentrations. Water and sodium retention increases blood volume causing central venous pressure to increase. These changes overall first help to maintain cardiac output however in the long term they eventually cause morbidity and mortality (BOOK). Treatment of heart failure begins with angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor and as severity increases a diuretic is added which supports the excretion of sodium and water (book). In very severe heart failure, the addition of β-blocker further decreases mortality in patients on ACE inhibitors and diuretics. Valsartan/ Sacubitril is a combination drug approved for use in heart failure. It has a brand name of Entresto and is also previously known as LCZ696....

The most recent common options are the Berlin Heart and ECMO. Even though both seem to provide the same result, medically they are extremely different and can provide a wide range of different results. Parents who are force to make these decisions, tend to question the effects that the two would have on their child. Whether it is the physical, emotional or the overall health effects, the decision is still a hard one to make. With the clock ticking and a life in the hands of medicine, the decision has to be reached immediately. The Berlin Heart is an external device that helps the right ventricle of the heart pump blood to the body. With surgery, Doctors implant tubes to both the left and right ventricle of the heart. These tubes are connected to the Berlin Heart and Pump to assist with the flow of blood and oxygen to both the lungs and heart. See below diagram [pic]Figure 1. 1. The deoxygenated blood flows from the body into the right atrium. ( Red Line) 2. Since the right ventricle can not pump blood into the lungs, the blood goes into the Berlin Heart (yellow circle). 3. The blood is pumped out of the Berlin Heart and goes into the pulmonary artery (Purple Line) and into the lungs. 4. ...Robert great summarization post of congestive heart failure, my grandfather had congestive heart failure so I know first hand the effects it has on a person’s life. I thought it was very interesting that you pointed out one the first symptoms being not able to exercise without experiencing discomfort because not many individuals think of that as being a symptom they go to the go to symptoms like shortness of breath, coughing, and fatigue. In the beginning, before my grandfather was diagnosed with congestive heart failure he experienced difficulties lying down flat. Lying down flat causes parts of the lung to be in a more ¬¬¬dependent position. Another symptom to keep in mind for an individual with congestive heart failure is waking up with severe shortness of breath, and immediately needing to sit up to get their breath, and this is known as “paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea”. The reason why there is a fluid build is when the heart’s output decreases; the body tries to compensate for it by releasing hormones that make the heart beat faster and stronger. This reflex though is only a short-term gain, and in the long run it really damages the heart’s function. The kidneys also sense the heart’s decrease in blood output, and they release hormones into the body, which cause sodium and...
