“She looked out the window her whole life, the way so many women sit their sadness on an elbow” (Cisneros 10). This quote is a very compelling line from the novella The House On Mango Street, written by Sandra Cisneros. Sandra Cisneros writes about a young girl, Esperanza, who is a typical young girl, at some moments an adult and at some a child. Except, this child can exhibit adult perception. Throughout the story, Esperanza meets all kinds of women who in the end change her perspective of the world. Esperanza is determined not to become a women sitting by a window, like the rest of her neighborhood. However, Esperanza understands that when she departs from Mango Street, she will continue to protect the women in her neighborhood. Sandra Cisneros …show more content…
Throughout the story Esperanza is determined to find a friend of her own. “One I can tell my secrets to. One who will understand my jokes without my having to explain them” (Cisneros 8). During the novella, Esperanza stumbles upon a girl, Sally, who is not a typical girl. Sally is beautiful, but dangerous. She wears makeup, short skirts, and talks to boys, but Esperanza is drawn to Sally. She finds Sally mysterious and wants to become her friend. Towards the end of the novella, Esperanza realizes that not even women protect each other. In the vignette “Red Clowns” Cisneros writes about how Sally is unfaithful and betrays Esperanza in way that could never be forgotten. Esperanza says, “I waited by the red clowns, just like you said, but you never came, you never came for me. Sally Sally a hundred times. Why didn't you hear me when I called? Why didn’t you tell them to leave me alone?” (Cisneros 99). In this quote Esperanza explains how she has been betrayed by someone she thought was her friend, but just because Esperanza was abandoned doesn't mean she will do the same. The experience of being betrayed affects Esperanza’s identity in a huge way. If she had not met Sally, she never would've developed a strong connection to women. Also, If she had not

House On Mango Street Literary Analysis

...The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, is a coming of age novel depicting the story of the a girl as she morphs into a woman, Esperanza Cordero. As one of the 20th centuries most powerful works about self-discovery and growing up in a society ridden with prejudice, the House on Mango Street, consistently provides morales to readers which transform their views on the society both in the U.S. and globally. Moreover, Cisneros constantly utilizes literary elements throughout her writing such as metaphor to enhance the clarity of the central idea in Esperanza’s narrative, that there is a lack of one’s ability to express themselves freely as a result of a multitude of reasons. Esperanza’s lack of ability to express herself freely is a result...

Final Paper

...Final Reflection Paper My internship site was at a high school located in the LAUSD nearby UCLA. The teacher I was assigned to work with was Ms. Lilly (names changed for privacy.) During the course of the internship, I got to know Ms. Lilly a lot better as she became more comfortable with me working with her in the classroom. Ms. Lilly teaches a variety of grade levels. She teaches 9th grade Honors English, 10th Grade AVID, a mixed grades writing seminar elective, and 12th grade AP English. Ms. Lilly had been teaching for 19 years at this high school. She received her credential at Loyola Marymount University. She began teaching because she loves English and loves working with kids. She thought it would be fun to combine the both together. I noticed that the biggest challenges for Ms. Lilly in the classroom are class size and having access to technology. Ms. Lilly said that classes in the past for 9th and 10th grade used to be limited to 20 students to 1 teacher ratio. The goal of this is to establish a strong foundation for the students before entering the larger class sizes of the upper grades. She has 29 students in her first period and 33 students in her fifth period. I noticed that it was hard for her to focus her attention on everything that was going on in the classroom because there were so many students doing various activities. Many would come up to her to ask questions and she seemed flustered at times. I feel like her job was made even harder...

Robert Frost and Sandra Cisneros

...ROBERT FROST Born on the day of March 26, 1874, in San Francisco, California, Robert Lee Frost was one of America’s most famous poets. Frost received four Pulitzer Prizes before he died in 1963. The first one in 1924 for New Hampshire: A Poem with Notes and Grace Notes, then in1931 for Collected Poems, in 1937 for A Further Range, and the last on in 1943 for A Witness Tree. Married to Elinor Miriam White, who was his co-valedictorian at high school, he lived in various locations throughout his life, in San Francisco, California for the first ten years of his life, then moved to New England where he lived most of his years; he also lived in Great Britain for three years where he met Edward, T. E. Hulme and Ezra Pound. Pound would become the first American to write a review of Frost's work; it was also in England that Frost wrote some of his best work. Robert Frost attended Dartmouth College, where he stayed for a little over a semester, and also Harvard University for two years. Robert Frost grew up in a state of turmoil. From his tumultuous childhood right up until his death, Frost was a character who could speak at Harvard and live on a farm in New Hampshire. He could dazzle the brightest students with poetic ingenious, but boil life down to, “It’s hard to get into this world and hard to get out of it. And what’s in between doesn’t make much sense. If that sounds pessimistic, let it stand”. Robert Frost’s poems “Mending Wall” and “The Road Not Taken” both exemplify the struggle...

Facebook

...Using Facebook to Teach Rhetorical Analysis Jane Mathison Fife The attraction of Facebook is a puzzle to many people over the age of thirtyfive, and that includes most college faculty. Yet students confess to spending significant amounts of time on Facebook, sometimes hours a day. If you teach in a computer classroom, you have probably observed students using Facebook when you walk in the room. Literacy practices that fall outside the realm of traditional academic writing, like Facebook, can easily be seen as a threat to print literacy by teachers, especially when they sneak into the classroom uninvited as students check their Facebook profiles instead of participating in class discussions and activities. This common reaction reflects James King and David O’Brien’s (2002: 42) characterization of the dichotomy teachers often perceive between school and nonschool literacy activities (although they are not referring to Facebook specifically): “From teachers’ perspectives, all of these presumably pleasurable experiences with multimedia detract from students’ engagement with their real work. Within the classroom economy technology work is time off task; it is classified as a sort of leisure recreational activity.” This dichotomy can be broken down, though; students’ enthusiasm for and immersion in these nonacademic literacies can be used to complement their learning of critical inquiry and traditional academic concepts like rhetorical analysis. Although they read these texts daily...

Rhetorical Terms/Devices

...Rhetorical Terms/Devices Figurative language is the generic term for any artful deviation from the ordinary mode of speaking or writing. It is what makes up a writer’s style – how he or she uses language. The general thinking is that we are more likely to be persuaded by rhetoric that is interesting, even artful, rather than mundane. When John F. Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” (an example of anastrophe), it was more interesting – and more persuasive – than the simpler, “Don’t be selfish.” Indeed, politicians and pundits use these devices to achieve their desired effect on the reader or listener nearly every time they speak. The stylistic elements in a piece of writing work to produce a desired effect related to the text’s (and author’s) purpose, and thus reveals the rhetorical situation. In classical rhetoric, figures of speech are divided into two main groups: Schemes — Deviation from the ordinary pattern or arrangement of words (transference of order). Tropes — Deviation from the ordinary and principal meaning of a word (transference of meaning). *Important Note: Words marked with an asterisk* are words for which it would be impossible for you to write 3 examples for your weekly vocabulary assignment. In those cases, please write only the definition, in your own words, and the rhetorical uses/effect of that device, or do what you are instructed to do under those words. ...The Moon and Sixpence by W. Somerset Maugham Author of "Of Human Bondage" THE MOON AND SIXPENCE The Moon and Sixpence Chapter I I confess that when first I made acquaintance with Charles Strickland I never for a moment discerned that there was in him anything out of the ordinary. Yet now few will be found to deny his greatness. I do not speak of that greatness which is achieved by the fortunate politician or the successful soldier; that is a quality which belongs to the place he occupies rather than to the man; and a change of circumstances reduces it to very discreet proportions. The Prime Minister out of office is seen, too often, to have been but a pompous rhetorician, and the General without an army is but the tame hero of a market town. The greatness of Charles Strickland was authentic. It may be that you do not like his art, but at all events you can hardly refuse it the tribute of your interest. He 第 1 页 共 129 页 disturbs and arrests. The time has passed when he was an object of ridicule, and it is no longer a mark of eccentricity to defend or of perversity to extol him. His faults are accepted as the necessary complement to his merits. It is still possible to discuss his place in art, and the adulation of his admirers is perhaps no less capricious than the disparagement of his detractors; but one thing can never be doubtful, and that is that he had genius. To my mind the most interesting thing in art is the personality of the artist; and if that is...

...IGOROTS * Home * IGOROT SONGS * IGOROT DANCE * IGOROT TRADITIONS * MONEY ON THE MOUNTAIN IGOROT TRADITIONS IGOROT TRADITIONS When we talk about Igorot identity and culture, we also have to consider the time. My point is that: what I am going to share in this article concerning the Igorot culture might not be the same practiced by the Igorots of today. It has made variations by the passing of time, which is also normally happening to many other cultures, but the main core of respect and reverence to ancestors and to those who had just passed is still there. The Igorot culture that I like to share is about our practices and beliefs during the "time of Death". Death is part of the cycle of life. Igorots practice this part of life cycle with a great meaning and importance. Before the advent of Christianity in the Igorotlandia, the Igorots or the people of the Cordilleran region in the Philippines were animist or pagans. Our reverence or the importance of giving honor to our ancestors is a part of our daily activities. We consider our ancestors still to be with us, only that they exist in another world or dimension. Whenever we have some special feasts (e.g., occasions during death, wedding, family gathering, etc.), when we undertake something special (like going somewhere to look for a job or during thanksgiving), we perform some special offer. We call this "Menpalti/ Menkanyaw", an act of butchering and offering animals. During these times we call them...
