A Brief History of UNIX
• Originally developed at AT&T Bell Labs
– Late 1960s and early 1970s
– Distributed in source code form

• Two standard versions evolved:
– AT&T Bell Labs produced SystemV (SysV)
– UC Berkeley developed BSD

• Linux might be considered a more integrated version of UNIX than its predecessors
• POSIX: effort of experts from industry, academia, and government to standardize UNIX
15

5

UNIX Concepts

16

Linux and UNIX
• Linux is a UNIX-like operating system
– Not written from the traditional UNIX code
– Kernel created to look and act like UNIX
• Enhancements include the POSIX standards
• Linus Torvalds released it free of charge in 1991

– Many distributions are available:

Debian GNU/Linux
Fedora
Red Hat Enterprise Linux openSUSE Linux
Ubuntu
17

Introducing UNIX/Linux Shells
• Shell: program that interprets commands you enter from keyboard
– Bourne shell, developed by S. Bourne (AT&T Bell
Labs), was the first UNIX command processor
– Another Bell employee developed the Korn shell
• History feature

– C shell is designed for C programmers’ use
– Linux uses Bash shell as its default shell

• Graphical user interface (GUI) desktop can open a terminal window
18

6

Introducing UNIX/Linux Shells
(continued)

19

Choosing your Shell
• Shells do much more than interpret commands
– Extensive built-in commands turn shells into firstclass programming languages

• A default shell is associated with your account when it is created
– You may switch to another shell after you log in

• Many users prefer the Bash shell
• Other shells:
– Bourne, ksh, csh, ash, tcsh, zsh

20

Switching from Shell to Shell
• Switch to another shell by typing the shell’s name on the command line
– For example, type tcsh, bash, or ash
– Work in that shell until you:
• Log in again
• Type another shell name on the command line

• Users often use one shell for writing shell scripts and another for interacting with a program

21

7

Choosing User Names and Passwords
• Log in using a unique user name and password
– User name is the same name used for electronic mail • Some UNIX versions recognize only first 8 characters
• Most versions of Linux recognize up to 32 characters

– Must choose a password
• Must have 6+ characters in newer versions
• Must be hard to guess!
• Change your password using passwd

• Common ways to access UNIX/Linux systems:
– Telnet, SSH, client SW, dumb terminal, etc.
22

Connecting to UNIX/Linux Using
Telnet or SSH
• Telnet is a terminal emulation program
– Example: telnet lunar.campus.edu

• Computers in a network are identified by IP address and (sometimes) a domain name
– Examples: 172.16.1.61, research.campus.edu

• Secure Shell (SSH) was developed for UNIX/Linux systems to provide authentication for TCP/IP applications – Example: ssh user@hostname

23

Logging In to UNIX/Linux

24

8

Using Commands
• To interact with UNIX/Linux, you enter a command
– UNIX/Linux are case sensitive
• John differs from john

– Two categories:
• User-level commands
• System-administration commands

– Must know a command’s syntax to enter it properly
• Need to know options and arguments

– Commands are typed on the command line

25

The date Command

-u option displays the time in Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)
26

The cal Command

-j option used to determine the Julian date
27

9

The who Command
• Determines information about who is logged in
– Important for the administrator
– Commonly used options include:

am I for information about your session whoami to see what account you are using
-H to show column headings
-u to show idle time for each user
-q for a quick list and total of users logged in
-b to verify when the system was last booted

28

The clear Command
• As you continue to enter commands, your screen might become cluttered
• Use the clear command to clear your screen
– No options or arguments

29

The man Program
• Online manual called the man pages

30

10

The man Program (continued)
• History section shows that command appeared in
Version 6 AT&T UNIX

31

The whatis Command
• Administrator may need to execute whatis to create database first

32

Command-line Editing
• Shells support certain keystrokes for performing command-line editing
– Bash supports ß and à to move cursor

33

11

Multiple Command Entries
• Type multiple commands on command line by separating them with a semicolon
– date ; cal

34

The Command-line History
• Most shells keep a list of recently used commands
– You can recall a command without retyping it
• Access command history with up/down arrow keys
• Press Enter to execute command once you find it

– Feature saves time and decreases frustration

35

Logging Out of UNIX/Linux
• When you are done, log out for security
– Ends your current process
– Indicates to OS you are finished
– For the Bourne, Korn, or Bash shells:
• Enter exit on command line
• Or, press Ctrl+d

– In C shell, enter logout on the command line

• However, if you are using a GUI, these commands will only close terminal window
– Use the Log Out option for the desktop instead
36

12

Understanding the Role of the
UNIX/Linux System Administrator
• A system administrator manages the system
– Also called the superuser
• Adds new users
• Deletes old accounts
• Ensures that system performs services well and efficiently for all users

– Unique user name: root

• Ordinary users are all other users

37

The System Administrator’s Command
Line
• Default setting:[root@hostname root]#
– hostname: name of computer the system administrator logged in to
• May simply be localhost: refers to the local computer

38

The Ordinary User’s Command Line
• Common formats:
[username@hostname username] $
[username@hostname ~] $ username@hostname: →

– username: user’s login name
– hostname: name of computer to which user is logged in
– Note: ~ refers to the user’s home directory

39

13

Changing Passwords
• A password is confidential and secures your work on the system
• To change your password, use passwd

Some rules will apply depending on system
Administrators can add rules of their own
You must know your current password to change it
If account does not have a password, use passwd command to create one

40

Viewing Files Using the cat, more, less, head, and tail Commands
• more and less display a file one screen at a time
– more scrolls only down
– less enables you to scroll down and up

• cat displays the whole file at one time
– Comes from “concatenate”: to link

• Use head or tail to view first or last lines of a file
– 10 lines by default

41

Redirecting Output
• > is an output redirection operator
– Creates a new file or overwrites an existing file by attaching it to a command that produces output
– Examples: who > current_users cat > filename

• To append output to an existing file, use >>
– Adds information to the end of an existing file without overwriting that file

42

14

Summary
• The OS is the most fundamental computer program
• UNIX/Linux OSs are multiuser and multitasking systems • UNIX/Linux systems can be configured as servers, client workstations, client/server workstations, or stand-alone workstations
• Concept of OS layered components originated with
UNIX
• In UNIX/Linux, you communicate with OS programs through an interpreter called the shell
43

Summary (continued)
• In UNIX/Linux, the system administrator sets up accounts for ordinary users
• The commands you type to work with UNIX/Linux have a strict syntax
– Learn syntax by referring to the man pages
– Examples of commands: who, cal, date, passwd

• Shells provide command-line editing capabilities and keep a history of your recently used commands
• Use cat, less, more, head, and tail to view files

Dream House

...In life everyone has their own dreams, whether it be about cars, houses, or their career. Most people I know dream to have the biggest and luxurious houses but I was always satisfied with mine. My house is not a tiny apartment nor a huge mansion but a two story, plain brown brick cozy house with white painted doors. The front yard is decorated with beautiful flowers; roses, lilies, violets, dahlias, daisies and much more, my mother usually plant them. She says, "Flowers are a pleasure and perfection of nature, and they give many things to people, and it does not matter if you are rich or poor, they give you a wonderful world which makes you feel happy". It definitely makes her and our neighbors happy. She shares the seeds of her flowers with the neighbors since they love and always compliment her garden. Walking through the front doors of my house after a long day of school always makes me feel so relaxed. There is always a smell of fresh vanilla or brown sugar candles the moment I walk through my white painted door. As I walk up the stairs and I see four bedrooms and a washroom. There is one bedroom for each of us in the family; my parents, brother, sister and myself. I usually go straight to my room when I get home. The walls in my room are painted a nice light green. There’s my bed in the middle of the room, a desk, night table and a closet. I have always wished I had a walk in closet but I'm comfortable with what I have now, this closet does me just fine. I usually lay in...

The Boarding House

...In The Boarding House by James Joyce we have the theme of powerlessness, social opinion, paralysis and marriage. Taken from his Dubliners collection the story is narrated in the third person by and unnamed narrator and what is interesting about the story is that the reader is given the point of view of two of the main characters in the story, Mrs Mooney and Bob Doran. Some readers will also notice that Joyce, as he does in a lot of the stories in Dubliners, is using colours (brown and yellow) to symbolise decay and paralysis. Instances of this within the story include Joyce describing what some of the lodgers in Mrs Money’s boarding house have eaten for breakfast. Joyce tells the reader that ‘the table of the breakfast-room was covered with plates on which lay yellow streaks of eggs and morsels of bacon-fat and bacon rind.’ This description is significant as Joyce is symbolizing, through colour the state of paralysis that exists within Mrs Mooney’s boarding house, particularly for Bob Doran. Another instance of Joyce using colour (yellow) to highlight a state of paralysis is the gilt clock that Mrs Mooney looks at when she is waiting for Bob to come and talk to her. The idea or theme of powerlessness is also explored in the story while Bob is in his room thinking about what he has to do. He feels trapped, concerned about what his friends and employers will think about his relationship with Polly and by what the priest has told him he must do. The role of the priest in the story...

House Chores

...Dirty Dish Fiasco There are many challenges while living in a fraternity house. With eight guys having their own schedules and personal habits clashing, there are many communication issues that take place. There are not only just communication issues with those of us living in the chapter house, but with other fraternity brothers that visit as well. In our house, we have to share two bathrooms, a living area, a laundry station and a kitchen. I will focus on talking about the major source of our communication fiasco; the kitchen. We have a medium double sink and a dish drainer with limited counter space. The worst thing is that we have to manually clean our dishes every time since we don’t have a dish washer to do the job for us. In general, when people are busy, they tend to put priorities like cleaning and washing dishes near the bottom. Most of us spend a lot of time cooking and utilizing resources in the kitchen. This means a lot of used dishes that accumulate very fast. There are two issues that arise from this: 1) People don’t always clean their dishes after using them right away and 2) The dish drainer is always full and unavailable for other dishes to wash their used dishes. The problem with the second point is that people get lazy The beginning of the problem is when the dish drainer gets full. This usually keeps us from doing their dishes and end up putting dirty dishes in the sink or on the counter next to the sink. We will ignore the fact that the dish drainer is...

Nora represents the 'doll' in this 'perfect doll house' with decorated Christmas trees and fancy parties. The realization that her life is a sham, she spends her whole life in a dream world. In this dream world, Nora does not take life seriously, an attitude that led to many of the plot’s complications. Nora and Torvald Helmer believe they are happily married and on the brink of a blissful new phase of life. Nora's lie is exposed and Torvald first blames, then forgives her and is finally abandoned as Nora recognizes the truth of her situation. She accuses her husband, and her father before him, of having used her as a doll, and declares herself unfit to be a wife or mother until she has learned to be herself. Nora's position in her own household, as well as Nora's perception of the world. Not only have the men in her life treated her like a "doll", to be dressed up and played with, but she herself has lived as that doll. She has played into the role, and she has always viewed the world from only the perspective of her little house. She is treated like a child and is not taken seriously. She is belittled by Torvald and doesn't listen to her feelings, wants, and desires. In Nora world she takes a back seat approach to life and becomes like an object, reacting to other’s expectations rather than advancing herself....

A Dolls House

...Literary Essay: A Doll’s House Rachael Shannon 2015-07-24 Ms. Behiel ENG3U Life for a housewife in the 1800s was very different from what it is in the 21st century, but what remains true is the difficulty in having a good marriage. The play, A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen, represents the struggles one might have went through, but he really challenged the typical marriage back then. In the play, Nora is a loving mother of three and a caring wife who has been misunderstood and mistreated. Nora’s decision at the end of the play to leave Torvald Helmer is justifiable because, he makes her perform by singing and dancing, he treats her like a doll and he dictates her whole life. Firstly, Torvald treats Nora as his own doll and makes her sing and dance for his pleasure. For example, before she must dance the Tarantella for the party and has to practice for Torvald, “Now, you must go and play through the Tarantella and practise with your tambourine.” (II, 41) Torvald makes Nora practice for the dance, he even commands her. This is a misuse of his power over her and he treats her like a subordinate. In addition Nora is able to bargain with her husband by offering her services, “I would play the fairy and dance for you in the moonlight, Torvald.” (II, 38) He has used her for his own entertainment as if she was a servant to him and not his wife. In conclusion, Nora had to leave Torvald and the children because her husband was mistreating her as a performer. Secondly, he treats...

House and Apartment: Similarities and Differences

...built an apartment which is has the same function as a house, that is a place to live in. Unlike a house, an apartment usually located at the center of city which is give an extra benefit for business utility. “Your apartment is your home, and you should be able to enjoy it to the fullest” (Ron Leshnower, 2010). Nonetheless, some people think that living in house would give the maximum comfortibility. There are 2 similarities between a house and an apartment. First of all, both of them would make you spend the same living cost. When you decide to live with luxurious life style, wherever you live, you would stay to live with that kind of habit. Second of all, whether it is a house or an apartment, it has a big role as a place to live in. In the other hand, there are 3 differences between living in a house and apartment. Firstly, living in a house would spend more money rather than an apartment. If you think that someday you would buy a house, first thing that you need to purchase is a land. A land is primary requirement to build a house. Thus, it should be really expensive especially if it is close by the city. And next, you need to buy the raw materials and hire someone to build a house. However, if you decide to buy an apartment, all you need to do is be ready for the money. “It is cheaper then living in a traditional house and paying different kinds of fees I am not familiar with.” (IELTS Essay Task 2: Apartment Or House, paragraph 2, http://www.goodatesl.com/ielts/writing...

A Doll's House

...Is Anything Really as it Seems Marion Graham Eng 125 Dr. Dolores Kiesler February 18, 2013 Is Anything Really as it Seems “A Doll’s House” is a play where nothing is as it seems; the play written by Henrik Ibsen was an extremely controversial play in that time. Many thought that Ibsen wrote as part of a feminist movement but when asked about this, Ibsen said that this wasn’t so he meant it to be about humanism. He saw it as, every person has the right to be who they wanted to be no matter what their gender was. In “A Doll’s House” everyone is keeping some kind of secret from some other character, that is till the very end where everything comes out and it causes hard feelings between some characters and some to come together. “A Doll’s House” is set during the holiday season. The Helmer is in the midst of getting ready for the Christmas season, buying presents and Christmas trees. Christmas and New Year’s celebrate the birth of Jesus and the renewal of the New Year. This is symbolic of the rebirth that the characters go through during the course of the play. Nora is awakened and brought to a realization that her marriage is in some ways, what one might call a sham. She realizes that to her husband she is not another person, not really. She is seen as most women at that time were as a second rate human being, somebody to satisfy man and take care of his needs, as well as help him in reproducing more human beings. She is unable to be her own person as long...

Houses: the Visual Reflection of the Family

...“Houses: The Visual Reflection of the Family” During our previous discussion in class, we understood how much influence and control cultures have over the form and spacing of different structures. In fact, in his book “Socio-cultural Factors and House Form”, Amos Rapoport even stated that, “…house form is not simply the result of physical forces or any single causal factor, but is the consequence of a whole range of socio-cultural factors seen in their broadest terms…”, and he adds, “I will call the socio-cultural forces primary and others (climate) secondary or modifying.” This means that when it comes to convenience versus beliefs or traditions, the latter would almost always be chosen over the former. When it comes to culture, the most primary and influential of these practices are those that are experienced everyday, at our own home. It is the culture practiced within the family, called the family culture. A family’s culture may be almost identical to those of society’s, but a family still make themselves unique from the all the rest by having their own set of values, traditions, practices, and of course means of enjoying life. And because of this, families tend to need their own shelters or homes; somewhere they could keep their culture intact and live life the way they want to. Houses are the visual reflection of the family. A family’s home is something that is directly being used by all the members of the family in it everyday; this means that the house may...
