Unit 2 Through the protagonist depicted wearing a huipil, a traditional Mayan shirt, it is shown that the Spanish did not truly conquer the indigenous people of Mexico. By this tiny sliver of the remaining cultural practices of indigenous women, we learn that the narrative we have been always been told about the Spanish colonizers is not true. The narrative that we read in history books, “the Europeans conquered the Mayans” cannot be said without the acknowledgments of the huipil’s long lasting existence which prevails in central Mexico. Today, we can still find evidence of their culture, leading us to believe that their customs survived through transculturation and the Spanish’s inability to wipe out all signs that the Indians ever lived.
