The Ice storm: Review
Ang Lee has directed the film “The Ice Storm,” which is based on a novel by Rick Moody. Ang Lee is a Taiwanese-born producer and movie director working in America. He has previously directed Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility” and Yann Martel’s “Life of Pi” which became very famous.
The film is starring quite a few talented actors including Kevin Kline, “Avatar” and “Alien”-star Sigourney Weaver, Tobey Maguire, who later starred in “Spiderman”, and “Lord of the Rings”-star Elijah Wood.
The Movie takes place during Thanksgiving in 1973, in the suburbs of Connecticut, where a dangerous ice storm hits. The movie presents two dysfunctional New Canaan families, who are trying to deal with the consequences of the social revolution of the 1960s: The middleclass had grown, and every family wanted the perfect suburban life: a father, who worked in the city, a stay-at-home mom, two to three children and a large house in the suburbs. This does unfortunately not, give the films main characters, the happiness they are looking for: The Hood family is only held together by desperation. The father, Ben Hood, is having an affair with his neighbour, Janey Carver, and his wife is a shoplifter who is desperately trying to feel young again. Their son, Paul, is home for the holidays but is more interested in going to the city to pursue his rich-girl crush from prep school. Their daughter, Wendy, is dating the Carver family’s son Mikey, but might be more interested in his little brother.
Many of the social problems in the 1970s are very obvious in the film. Sex, drugs and adultery are all prominent in the film. The sexual revolution is in full swing for the characters. Both the parents and their children are experimenting with new things as a way of escaping reality. The parents goes to a so-called “key party,” where male partners place their car and house key into a bowl, and at the end of the evening the female partners would randomly select keys from the bowl and leave with that key's owner. Also the kids are experimenting with drugs and sex; Paul smokes marijuana various times in the movie, and his sister, Wendy, enjoys sexual games with her neighbours’ sons.
Director Lee have named the film ‘The Ice Storm’, not only because a literal ice storm occurs in the film, but also because there lays symbolism in the name. The name represent the ice-cold emotions the characters display to each other. In the movie, the storm hits at the same time as the climax occurs and everything is spinning out of control for the characters.
The movie perfectly describes the sad reality of the 1970s American suburbs, and gives a good insight on how it was to live in the suburbs as a parent and as a child. If you are looking for a movie filled with action and explosions, this is not the movie for you, but if you are looking for a movie that gives you something to think about, and is packed with drama and conflicts, this is the one for you.

Chapter 03 - Markets, Organizations, and the Role of Knowledge

...Chapter 03 - Markets, Organizations, And The Role Of Knowledge CHAPTER 3 MARKETS, ORGANIZATIONS, AND THE ROLE OF KNOWLEDGE CHAPTER SUMMARY This chapter answers three primary questions: How do market systems work? What are the relative advantages of market systems compared to central planning in large economies? Why do we observe so much economic activity conducted within firms in market economies? In addition to covering the basic principles of exchange and supply-and-demand analysis, the chapter introduces two concepts that are critical to the subsequent development in the book: specific knowledge and contracting costs. The chapter also makes the important point that individuals have incentives to choose value-maximizing organizational arrangements. An appendix presents the basics of present value analysis and the valuation of common stock. It also discusses the concept of stock market efficiency. This appendix provides useful background material (for example, when instructors want to discuss the stock market reactions to events). Storm Prep Research Paper

...for the Big Snowstorm Storm Prep Saves You Time, Hassle, Dollars, and Serious Inconvenience As we settle in for what may or may not be the snowstorm of the century (again), it makes sense to review the basics of storm preparedness. There are several things you can do to get yourself, your family, and your home ready to ride out the storm itself and any inconveniences that may follow. As we all know the big issue with major winter storms are the snow and ice that trap you in your home and bring down trees, impacting the local utility’s ability to deliver electricity, and the temperatures which can freeze and rupture pipes, causing flooding. Here is a quick list of how to prepare for what the storm may deliver. Prevent Frozen Pipes Make sure that you’ve disconnected all exterior hoses and turned off the pipes...

Movie Review for Comp 1

...son who is trapped by a sudden international storm that plunges America into a new Ice Age. I liked this movie for many reasons, but it had some draw backs. Summary In the beginning of the movie Jack Hall (played by Dennis Quaid) is at the North Pole drilling core samples for research on global warming. As they are drilling into the ice getting samples, the ice starts to split leaving a very large valley in the ice and some of the samples could be left behind. Jack makes a daring leap across what seems to be a 7 foot crevice in the ice. He makes it across and gets the samples but as he is about to leap back across to the safety of his colleges the ice splits again, and he narrowly escapes falling in the crevice. After getting the samples back to the lab and testing them he realizes that there is an issue with the samples and also that there was a sheet of Ice the size of Texas that broke off, so he goes to a convention to warn other people of the facts that he has learned. Discussion One thing that I liked about this movie is the snow. The fact that the frigid cold could freeze your skin, crystalize your lungs, freeze Jet fuel at -200 Fahrenheit in a matter of seconds. Also it froze the ocean solid enough that it could be driven on and walked upon. It was pretty cool how they could drive across the ocean and the super deep snow and nothing happens to them. Flag poles and flags were frozen stiff at the eye of the storm and this is what all humans should have been...

...conditions analogous to a natural desert" (Desertification and Hazard Assessment, 2010). Although human activity is commonly blamed for the problem, there is some debate among experts regarding the severity of global warming, and whether the cause is a natural phenomenon or in fact a result of mankind’s environmental negligence. A. Impetus discussion: 1. Global warming is fiction: Although it is agreed that an increase of Co2 levels are causing a green house effect, according to Brown, there is no consensus among scientists to explain the true cause of global warming (2010). Some scientists believe the warming temperatures and rising sea levels is a natural event which has been going on since the last Ice Age. Their position is there is no proof that the issue is directly related to human actions, and that sea levels have risen and fallen at various degrees over the last 10,000 years. They claim there is too much hype regarding the immediate danger if we don’t act quickly to change it. They feel that as naturally as climate changes occur, and sea...

...industrial revolution. There is an expectation that global warming will result to rising sea levels, droughts, fires, heat waves, extreme storms, heavy rainfall, floods, and melting of snow and ice. These changes as envisaged would affect agriculture and general food availability with devastating consequences for existence of life on earth. In additional, life would change completely because many systems are tied to the climate. For example, temperature changes would affect breeding cycle of insect, and this has implications on pollination and food availability for humans. Although short-term weather variations are normal and expected, long-term changes are deleterious to the environment and life on earth (Houghton, 2004). There is evidence that global warming is becoming worse primarily due to rise in carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere. In 1950s, the concentration of carbon dioxide was at 315 parts per million. Currently, the concentration is about 385 parts per million. To discover an increase in concentration of carbon dioxide throughout history, scientists have used bubbles of air trapped in ice and results show that the current concentration of carbon dioxide is the highest and has been, for more than 10,000 years (Maslin, 2007). Atmospheric carbon dioxide was 280 parts per million before the industrial revolution. During the ice age, concentration was only 100 parts and 300 during warm periods. Other green houses gases such as methane and nitrous oxide have increased...

...Global Warming: How Do We Stop it and The Effects it has on our World Jay A. Clemons ITT-Technical Institute – West Palm Beach Campus (Global Warming, 2014) Global Warming: How Do We Stop it and The Effects it has on our World Throughout Earths long history the planet has cooled and wormed several times, such as, the great Ice Age, the volcanic activity when dinosaurs ruled the Earth, and the apparent meteor that hit the Earth and wiped out the dinosaurs. Some of these have been caused by shifts in the Earth’s orbit, or from a meteor that may have hit the planet or volcanic activity causing massive clouds of dust and debris to block out the sun. Now for the last century we have forced the Earth’s next warming trend. Since humans have started using fossil fuels and emitting greenhouse gases, the Earth has started its next warming trend. (Table 1) Carbon dioxide and methane gases have increased in the upper atmosphere causing it to absorb more heat, which increases the Earth’s temperature. This warming triggers many undesirable effects on the planet. Literature Review Have you noticed that the severity of the weather on our planet in the last thirty to forty years has changed dramatically? Such as, record droughts, increased tornado activity, rising ocean levels, severe periods of heat and cold. These are being caused by the excesses of humanity. The use of fossil fuels, gas and oil, the cutting down of trees in the rainforests and elsewhere, wildfires in our forests...

...topic in quite different ways. The first website I looked at was http://environment.nationalgeographic.com. It talked about the different effects of Global Warming. The article talks about how a group of scientist called the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change meet up every few years and compare their notes they’ve been taking and also review the most recent scientific discoveries and write a report summarizing everything they know about global warming up to that point. Talks about how one of the first things we learned was how many greenhouse gases was one of the causes of Global Warming. This comes from fossil fuels in cars when they emit gases from the tailpipes. The gas responsible for the most warming is carbon dioxide. People breathe out CO2, but not enough to cause Global Warming on its own. The effect from this article show that the planet if warming up from the North Pole to the South Pole. Globally, the mercury is already up more than 1 degree. Global Warming is effecting thing like the Ice Caps, which are melting worldwide. This includes mountain glaciers, ice sheets covering West Antarctica and Greenland, and Arctic sea ice. Which put a lot of animals that live in those cold climates in some real danger. Adélie penguins population has went from 32,000 to about 11,000 in the last 30 years. The sea level has risen faster than ever before. A lot of plants and animals have moved further north or to higher, cooler areas. The second sites I visited had the completely...

A debate that global warming is in fact a fiction 2. A debate that global warming is a fact II. Argumentation A. The Melting Glaciers B. Weather that is Difficult to Follow Conclusion/Closing: Global Warming: Fact or Fiction For years the glaciers have been melting and catching people’s attention, this has resulted in the rise of over 6 in. in the sea level where as a hundred years ago it was much lower. This raises the question as to whether global warming is a fact or fiction. Literature on global warming is comprised mostly on intelligent discussion on having "too much caution on global warming" (Nature, 1991) or "global warming is real" (Kerr, 1989, p. 603) rather than fiction. Let me break this down for you people, society is using to much resources and energy in assuring ourselves that global warming is in fact an issue at all. The top debate in favor of global warming being fiction is the lack of scientific evidence connecting the emissions of greenhouse gases as a result of human activity with global warming (Brown, 2010, p. 26). First and for most any connection at all is completely uncertain and there is no proof. Then we also have, people in today’s that say global warming is a fact and say that society, "have caused a number of environment issues, such as global...

The Battle Of Trenton Battle Analysis

...280). It was nearly nine o’clock and The Battle of Trenton was over (Wood, 1990, p.74). In less than an hour’s time, an Army that had been all but officially written off by a far superior force had found new life and proven itself a capable fighting force. The success of the attack on Trenton showed that the Continental Army under the command of General George Washington was capable of meeting and beating a world renowned fighting force in open combat. It also showed to General Washington the vital importance of intelligence operations. Intelligence and a successful military deception operation combined with a lackadaisical intelligence effort from the Hessians showed the American commander how the tide of battle could be turned. Review of the Setting Strategic and Operational Overview The Battle of Trenton happened a year in a half into a war that would last a total of six long years. The American Revolutionary war started in April of 1775 “with the first blood shed at Lexington and Concord near Boston” (McCullough, 2005, p. 7). At that time the American forces were loosely regulated militia. That battle in those small towns in Massachusetts was the catalyst many colonials had been looking for to start their path to independence. By December 1776, the Continental Army had become a professional force with a proper command structure. On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean was the nation controlling the most powerful military in the world. The 18th century British...

Sci151 - Planetary Comparison

...Planetary Comparison SCI/151 May 3, 2011 Norman Stradleigh Planetary Comparison Planet Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the fifth largest of the planets of the Solar System. Earth’s surface is 71 percent water and is the only astronomical planet currently known where life exists. Earth is our home planet. Scientist and astronomers have studied our planet for Centuries and they have discovered much about our planet. Scientist have gained so much more knowledge of our Solar System in the last half-century after the NASA launched the first spacecraft and travel beyond Earth’s atmosphere has opened up to those who wish to explore. In the following paragraphs, we will discuss Earth and the comparison between the other known planets in our Solar system. Earth has several layers that have distinct chemical and seismic properties: Crust, Upper mantle, Transition region, Lower mantle, D’’ layer, Outer core, and Inner core. The crust, the part we inhabit, is just a tiny fraction of the Earths mass. Most of the mass of the Earth is in the mantle, a majority of the rest is in the core (Nine Planets, 1994-2010). Earth has three layers of density: The core primarily metals, such as nickel and iron, resides in the central core and is the highest-density material. The Mantel forms the thick mantle that surrounds the core is mostly minerals that contain silicone, oxygen, and other elements and is a rocky material of modest density....
