Ice Man – Elmore Leonard 2012

The title “Ice Man” can be referred to a person we meet in the short story. His is called for “iceman”, but his real name is Darryl Harris. The Iceman works for “immigration and Customs Enforcement”. He is a white man who is racists, we can see that the way he treats the Indian boys. He seems like a cold man as his nickname “ICE”

The short story takes place in the US and it is about Victor and his friends Nachee and Billy Cosa.
Victor loves to ride bulls and he is very good at it. When Victor turns twenty he wins 4,000 dollars at the All - Indian National Rodeo in Palm Springs. After that Victor and his friends - Nachee and Billy Cosa, decides to celebrate his rides at the bar where they drinks some tequilas and talk. Victor tells his friends, how he learned to ride bulls while he was working for his boss Kyle McCoy. At the bar he sees police officers that are at the bar to check if there are any workers without permission. Victor also noticing that a white man (Darryl Harris) at the bar watching Victor and his friends. The white man is working for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and asks Victor about his age. The white man provokes and threatens Victor to accuse him for something he didn’t do.

Victor and his “NDN brother” (10) Nachee and Billy Cosa are Indian. Victor is from a “Mimbreno Apache”(8) and his to friends Nachee and Billy Cosa is from “Mojave” (9) tribe. We don’t get so much information about the boys, but Victor is twenty years old and loves to ride bulls. He and his “ NDN brothers”(10) work for a man who named Kyle McCoy. At the beginning of the short story the three boys acting normal, where they are sitting at the bar and celebrate Victor. But later when the Iceman provokes them, they begin to behave differently. They become more annoying, unrespectable and provocative in they way they talk to the Iceman. Although the boys are from different Indian tribes, they supports, defend and help each other when the Iceman provokes them. The guys are proud Indian guys.

The conflict between Victor and the Iceman is about discrimination. The Iceman behave racist when he all the time watching the three boys in the bar. The Iceman works for the “Immigration and Customs Enforcement” (10), where he takes “illegal aliens to prison” (10). It is maybe the reason he has the courage to provoke the Indian boys. The Iceman threaten Victor to accuse him for “Drunk and disorderly” (11), unless he shows an ID that show he is “old enough” (11) to drink.
The Iceman trying to entertain himself by irritates the Indian boys, who are at the bar to celebrate Victor. The Iceman wants to see the boys ID, but the boys do not have their ID on them. They don’t carried about it, because they are American citizens. They way Victor and his Indian friends acts is normal. They being discriminated and treated differently in their own country. The Iceman seems to be a cold white man like “ICE”. He acting like his behavior is normal and treats the boys like that, just because “they are being Indians” (12). He doesn’t see his behavior wrong and also says “what’s wrong with that” (12). Since America is a free country should all be treated equal. There should not be such a racist people like The Iceman who works for the public authorities.

In the short story “Iceman”, we see the three Indian boys who are being treated unfairly by the Iceman. This also happens in real life. There are many people who have been treated in an unfair and unreasonable manner, maybe because of their race, clothing, sex or religion. When I think of the injustice, I just think of racial difference. The most viewed injustices that you can experience here in Denmark will probably be discrimination. I have not seen or been in a situation where I have been treated unfairly. I am one of the many Muslims who live in Denmark and many of them are often generalized and are treated differently. The reason why I might not have experienced it can be because of my white Caucasian color that makes me look like a Danes. I hope not that I will be treated injustice for my nationality or religion. We all se in the media and reading in the Internet all the horrible stories many immigrant in Denmark have experienced. But injustice is not only based on race or religion, but also something else. I would say that injustice is something you feel and decide. You may feel that you are being treated differently than the others in the classroom or at work. The only way we can solve it is to treat everyone equally.

According to Scallan, he was found buried along the border between Austria and Italy, in the possession of 61 tattoos. For Richard, killing were only contracts, he didn't view them out of personal affairs it was just business. It didn't matter the weapons of choice he use to murder his victims like knife, guns, cyanide, and a crowbar. He was the kind of guy who didn't have any attachment as long as the job got done. For me he falls into the category of Psychiatric Criminology because he displays a psychopath behavior. A psychopath is an individual who has a personality disorder, especially one manifested in aggressively antisocial behavior, and who is lacking in empathy. Being able to manipulated those around him and to be so unemotionally attached to them is what defined Richard Kuklinski. The “Iceman” in this case is that he so detail in his line of work that his “friends” will later turn into enemies, and see no problem with it and to be able to erase his tracking to all those murders...

Harry Potter Analysis

...Jazmin Cordova December 1, 2009 English 101 Professor Williams Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone by J.K Rowling and Beauty: A Retelling of Beauty and the Beast by Robin McKinley there is some serious controversy about all the magic that is used in both these books. Magic and mythical creatures are found throughout both books. Magic is the essential theme of the books and is one of the reasons both these books have been questioned. The books have been questioned because they give children a false sense of what really happens. These books in no way are in touch with reality; the biggest question here is should these books be censored just because they are too fictional? It is the magic and the thought of a whole other type of world that opens up a child’s imagination and allows the imagination to grow. In Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone; magic is essentially what the story is focused around. Harry is a part of a whole other world where magic is socially accepted. Harry find out he is a wizard and has to decide whether or not he is going to use his powers for good or evil. In the quest to find out who he is he has to first go through the trials of learning his past and facing up with his parents murderer for the first time. ...In the article, Queer Cyborgs and New Mutants: Race, Sexuality, and Prosthetic Sociality in Digital Space, Mimi Nguyen analyzes the dialectic relationship between organic bodies and technologies in society by conducting an intersectional analysis. Specifically, Nguyen utilizes a narrative about Karma, a mutant who was a Vietnamese war refugee with the ability to “seize control of other peoples mind and bodies” (Nguyen 38). Nguyen, also of Vietnamese descent, use this first-personal narrative to not only relate herself to Karma, but to also humanize the subject at hand. Nguyen exhorts that being a cyborg or mutant is considered to be the ‘other’ in society. She claims that al though these mutants were brought together to fight evil mutants, these “New Mutants are nonetheless viewed with fear and suspicion by the non-mutant population” (Nguyen 374). These cyborgs and mutants are characterized as outsiders because their bodies are subjected to specific stereotypes that do not fit in the overwhelmingly “normal” society. Nguyen continues to say, “in these science fictions mutant bodies and cyborg bodies are analogized as minoritarian bodies, subjected and subjugated…” (377). Relating back to class discussion, these bodies are actually constructing the space around them. Since these mutants are so different and are being put in a space where they are considered to be the “other,” a majority believes it is there duty to remove them from that space. Even with their unique powers and...

X-Men First Class

...X-Men First Class I remember growing up in Nigeria as a kid. I recall my mum telling me I always watched X-men animation and how I dreamed of being either Charles or Erik because of the unique super hero powers they have compared to the other mutants. The main aim of this paper is to pass a massage to the reader explaining how super hero movies are not necessarily just for entertainment. Most super hero movies, comic books, and stories have hidden messages being passed to the viewers. In the paragraph below, (thesis begin) I will be explaining and breaking down what I mean by hidden messages. I will use some characters from the movie X-men First Class. These include Erik who grew up to be called Magneto who mostly use his powers to torture, torment or hurt others compared to Charles who used his powers to help people, Raven who grew up to be called Mystic, and Hank who grew up to be called Beast. One hidden message is found in Erik’s childhood and what he grew up to become. Another scene of Raven shows her insecurities about how she looks, and Hank’s insecurities about his physical looks radiate a particular message to the public.(thesis end) After watching and reading several X-men books or movies, I have come to a conclusion that the characters classified as the X-men in the book and same as the movies are not necessarily super heroes. Watching it or reading it from a kids perspective, they automatically look like super heroes because as a kid there is only one thing in...

Otzi

...Discovered on September the 19th 1991, Otzi the Iceman is Europe’s oldest preserved mummy, living around the time of 3,300 BCE. Discovered in a deep, cold place in the Otzal Alps, Otzi had been discovered by 2 hikers, where Otzi was in a melting glacier. One theory suggests that Otzi had hiked up to the mountains after battling in conflict, where Otzi tried to find some rest, but hypothermia had found him instead. With Otzi was some magnificent equipment and high quality clothing that represent his time, a hide coat, loincloth, bearskin cap, leggings, shoes, belt, pouch, axe, dagger, bow, quiver, arrows, backpack, net, containers and a first aid kit. Clothing like the hide coat, loin cloth, bearskin cap, leggings and shoes (the oldest kind in the world) represent Otzi’s good quality life, where Otzi was prepared, warm and had a vast knowledge of survival. Equipment like the copper bladed axe, a bow, quiver and arrow, backpack, net and first aid kit indicate Otzi’s handiwork, lifestyle and weapons ready for survival and conflict. About two feet long, the copper axe was made from a portion of the trunk of a yew tree, with the handle coming from the trunk, and the shaft came from the branch, and the copper blade fitted in by a leather binding, allowing maximum durability. The Iceman’s dagger and sheath (made by the inner bark of a lime tree) was around 5 inches long, with its flint blade resembling an arrowhead, connecting to the wooden handle. The Murder of the Iceman

...The Murder of Oetzi An unexpected visit in the night led to the devastating destruction of the Italian Alps village. The wind gusted across the entire village as it took with it clumps of orange, red, and yellow crunchy leaves which spread the smells of decomposed leaves. While the hooting owls softly accompanied the soothing sounds of the winds. The trees that surrounded the village stood eerily still where most of them were naked and barren with only a few lonely leaves attached to their arms. The pitch black sky was illuminated by the full moon and many stars. The hundred villagers slept soundlessly in their mud worn huts. Particularly, a well-respected man with the name of Acca, chief of the village, who should have been awake to watch over the village alerting his villagers if intruders were to attack. Unfortunately, a woman’s agonizing cry served as the warning bell instead. A blood-curdling scream awoke Acca from his peaceful dream. “Wh-what was that?” growled the sleepy man slurring his speech. He yawned and rubbed his eyes with his rough hands out of habit. As he sat up on the ground he wondered whether the scream was merely an aspect of his bizarre dream. The side of his prominent, hooked nose twitched involuntarily which signaled that danger is near. He rotated his body slightly to the left trying to see if he could catch a glimpse of something that could prove whether the scream was real or not. While doing so the moonlight that beamed through the window revealed...
