The Importance Of Family Life

My mom would always tell me, “I can’t wait until you’re 18, so you can move out of my house!” This was usually said after my many childhood “mess ups”, causing my mom tons of stress. But the older, and more mature I got, the less I heard her say the expression. The closer I got to the magic number eighteen, the more real it got. My mom began to fear the day that I went off to college. It scared not only my mom, but my whole family. The same little Anthony they had watched grow up was stepping into adulthood. This scared me even more. There was even a time period where I contemplated if college was even the right decision for me. All of my friends committed to what school they were gonna attend pretty early, which was scaring me even more. …show more content…
I was at a high school basketball game over winter break, a game where a lot of the alumni came back to support. I ran into a former student that I was good friends with, who just so happened to attend CMU. We began talking and after the game he told me to call him if I ever had any questions about college. I ended up calling the same night. We talked about everything from the social life, to the party life, to the difficulty of math courses. He and I are alike in many ways and shared a lot of the same values. He began telling me why he chose CMU, and he had the same exact options as me. He told me that CMU is better geared to set you up with a job right after college, and that I would fit right in at CMU. He described the social life as “unparalleled”, and was very happy he made the decision he made. He also recommended some courses I should take and avoid if I were to end up going to CMU. After he hung up the phone, the decision was very easy for me. I was going to be a Chippewa. I was going to take the chance, leave my friends and family behind(but not too far) and pave my own way. This to me was the perfect choice for me. I was getting away and starting fresh. Though none of my close friends picked CMU as the school for them, I was confident in my social skills that I would friends just as I did in high school. There was something about CMU that stood out to me, and It just gave me a feeling that no other school had given me. I was going to go in blind with a roommate, which would eventually make me better socially and as an overall communicator. Sharing a room with two other guys was going to be a huge change of pace, which would make me adjust and appreciate what I’ve always had

The Importance of Good Health

...The Importance of Good Health ‘Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.’ - World Health Organization Many people do not realize the importance of good health, and even if they do, they may still disregard it. Whether we work at home or in an office, we need good health in order to perform our duties well. When people talk about health, they usually refer to the condition of the body. However, health does not merely mean being free from physical pain or the symptoms of disease. The mind is of crucial consideration in the overall assessment of wellbeing. The necessity of good health is not limited to a particular religion, caste, creed or gender. Most diseases have their origin in mind, or the manomaya kosha. A person can be said to be healthy when his or her body is healthy and the mind is clear and calm. While many people may not have material problems, they may be unhappy or agitated at the psychological level. They may suffer from insomnia due to stress, or feel depressed, irritable and aimless. All these are the result of an unbalanced mind. Unfortunately, most of our attempts to become happy relate only to the body. We strive for materialistic ends, such as lucrative income, status, a big house, an expensive car, jewelry and so on, because we believe these things will make us happy. Seldom do we give attention to our mind and soul, which the time and resources we spend in trying to...

Reflections

...foundation for many other attitudes. There is a famous Chinese saying says that if a person does not have piety towards his/her parents, how can he/she be loyal towards his/her friends, country or any other? For teenagers, being loyal and devoted to our parents may seem to be anathema to most of us because most of us want to express our independence and freedom. We want to do whatever we want. Some of us may even wonder what the importance of filial piety is. In my opinion, filial piety is especially important because I believe that learning how to be a filial son and daughter would prepare us for the kind of life we want to have in the future. In order to live a life of filial piety, we need to exercise three things: absolute faith, absolute love and absolute obedience. To be a filial son and daughter, we must first exercise absolute faith in our parents. Here we are talking about trusting our parents. We should give in to higher authority because they mean well. One of the most fearful things about trusting anybody in life is the fear of being vulnerable. Someone may even ask,” Why should we trust our parents completely? Why can’t I do something more interesting?” If we absolutely trust and are totally faithful that we will do well in our father and mother’s hands, what we...

Antigone

...Quran Norris English 102 AC106 Mrs. Stephenson 0Antigone Paper Being a part of a family forces one to have responsibilities and duties that are needed to be fulfilled. In Sophocles’ Greek tragedy Antigone, Antigone has the responsibility of being loyal to her brother, Polynices. Her intuition and strong will discourages her from listening to the power of the state, thus disobeying part of her family, to respect her immediate family. Her devotion leads to the destruction of Creon and herself. Proving that Antigone’s role as a part of a family, does not stand in her determination to do what she believes to be right. It is for this reason that she is willing to destroy herself and Creon to fulfill her duty to both her immediate family and the Gods above. In order to understand Antigone’s actions and motivation, it is important to understand the importance of what a proper burial is to the people of ancient Greece. Unlike most religions, the Greek did not believe in the reward and punishment concept after death. They did not believe that good people went to heaven, while the evil suffered in hell. They believed that life after death was a sad and miserable affair, and the dead deserved to rest in peace. They believed in the importance of a proper burial, as proposed and supported by the gods. The gods mandated the way people lived their everyday life, and how they lived their life after death. The general belief of the people, was that those who did not get a proper burial...

Compare And Contrast Hootie And Charlie Bundrum

...The lives of abject poverty and continual struggle created a distinct way of life for the working poor, a characteristic of which was the importance of extending help and aid to their fellow working poor. The value of giving aid and assistance to fellow working poor resounds across the lives of both the mill workers and Charlie Bundrum. For Charlie, it took the form of taking in and taking care of strays. The first case was Hootie, who Charlie semi-adopted after Hootie was attacked in his home on the river. Sociology

...Stefany Lopez Sociology November.7.2012 In today’s society life, values and morals are very different from what they used to be years ago. Life has changed and people’s priorities have changed specially family’s priorities. In the world that we live in today families are no longer united, they no longer communicate and they no longer act as a family. Parents are no longer involved in their children’s life, leading to miscommunication and leading parents and their children to no longer have that bond or that communication that makes parents and children’s relationship strong (Page, Thomas, 2011). Today’s society revolves all around technology, appearances, sex, and material things especially in the lives of teenagers and young people. Teenagers no longer communicate with their parents; they would rather spend time on their computer, on their cellphones, playing video games, being on social networks, etc. The majority of young people especially teenagers not only in the United States but all over the world are spending their time in things that don’t really benefit them what so ever instead of putting their time into things that benefits them and will help in their future like school, sports, spending more time with their families and most importantly giving god some of their time, and having a spiritual life. Teenagers and young people are no longer having that spiritual connection because their parents are no longer making them be involved in church or making them be involved...

Theories of Personality

...personality. As for myself, my personality was sculpted by the importance of my family, how independence is vital, my upbringing and parenting options, and finally, how education has affected my personality. Theories of personality are significant because it makes you view things differently and even similar to your parents. People often asks themselves, “Why do I work so hard?” or “What keeps me motivated day after day?” Most are unsure, but the answer is family. Whether they know it or not, family is the first real relationship you have with another human being. However, some are still uncertain as to what the meaning of family is? Everyone is faced with tough situations at some point in their lives, family helps them sustain and solve their situation based on their values that they learned from their parents. People’s values are all different based on their family and this is another thing that separates you from the rest of the world (Kanade, 2011).. Family has always been an essential part of my life. Being raised by solely my mother, it made me very close to her and my siblings. Most people don’t realize that when they were brought into this world they were unfit to survive, but with the aid of family and society, they prepare you for a future of independence. What you learned from your family becomes your value system, priority system, helps you perform perceptions, and aids you in actions. Without the assistance of family, people would be lost and would seek to find a value system...

Deuteronomy

...Deuteronomy Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Hebrew Bible. On the day before the Israelites enter the Promised Land, Canaan, Moses delivered three speeches to the Israelites and reminded them to obey God. Moses emphasized the promises God made to the Israelites and the importance of loyalty to God. Moses warned them not to worship idols and cautioned them the punishments they would get if they disobey God or worship idols. He also told the Israelites that they had to follow God’s commandments in order to take the Promised Land. Whether they would live a good life in the Promised Land depended on whether they followed God and His law. Throughout Deuteronomy, Moses explained to the Israelites why they should obey God. Although some of the commandments are surprisingly harsh from the modern perspective, I argue that the biblical text and the harsh punishments emphasize the overarching theme that obedience to God is obligatory and the importance of covenant, which is a contract between God and the Israelites. Deuteronomy discussed various reasons that Israelites had to obey God, and there was no other option. Moses explained that obedience to God is compulsory. In Deuteronomy 6:4, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might.” Moses mandated the Israelites to be loyal to God. The LORD is the only God to obey. That is the rule. Moses stated that obedience to God was...
