The Importance Of George Melver's Life In World War One

On March 24th I had the opportunity to speak with George Melver about his experiences during World War 2. George was a child during the war, he was 8 years old when the war started. When America entered the war he was 10 years old. He remembers the day the United States was attacked at Pearl Harbor. He says he was sitting in the living room with his family listening to their radio. They heard the news of the bombing and he saw the frightened look on his parents’ faces. Because of this George was worried. But at that time he did not know that we were going to enter the war. He did not know that his life was about to change.

The thing I found the most interesting is that George remembers being in his one room schoolhouse and drawing propaganda posters about the war. He says he specifically remembers one poster that one of his classmates made that had a vivid picture of the bombings of pearl harbor. He and his family helped out with the metal scrap drive. He lived on a farm and remembers having to take in old chicken wire and farm equipment. He remembers his mom telling him to ration the metal and not take advantage of it because it could be used in the war. Before the war, George’s mom was a stay at home mom that worked in the house. But during the war the women took the men's jobs in the factories. His mom had to work in a factory where she would make ammunition for the war. Georges dad was enlisted in the army, but he does not remember where he was deployed at. His dad was gone for about 9 months before he came back
