In a highschool classroom you will most likely find a teacher in front of the class and the students sitting at their desks, taking notes. Yet, you will find some of the students dozing off. Today, a large amount of high school students are not getting enough sleep. As students get older, they barely have any free time. I believe school should start at a later time, since teenagers need at least 9.5 hours of sleep according to the National Sleep Foundation. Most students get less than that because of sports, clubs , and other extra curricular activities. Not to also mention students also receive homework, especially people in honor and AP classes. They are simply not getting enough sleep. So how can we solve such an important issue that …show more content…
Schools are also worried that they will have to buy new busses or spend money in other ways. Even though schools may see these problems, schools that have already changed their start time have easily avoided this problem. Another counterargument is that if schools start later, then school must get out later. First of all, kids would not be around their parents longer from the time they get home, which can lead to unproductive behavior. Also, kids that drive home would be less likely to get into an accident due to fatigue behavior. In conclusion, high schools all over the world should start at a later time in order for students to get better grades, have a decrease in emotional health and prevent the risks of having a defect in physical health. It may seem like this problem is encountered only in the United States but similar research has been found all over the world. Therefore, this issue on students not getting enough sleep is biological, rather than a “cultural phenomenon.” This goes to show that sleep is very important and that schools should take care of this serious

Why School Should Start Later

...Teens across America are becoming sleep deprived and their grades are starting to slip. According to the experts students are not receiving the recommended amount of 9 ¼ hours of sleep each night. With most students having extracurricular activities, friends, and other commitments outside of school, it seems as though there are just not enough hours in a day to accomplish everything. Mending all of these problems with one solution seems impossible, but researchers say that starting school no earlier than 8:30 am will fix all of the issues. The National Sleep Foundation conducted a poll that revealed 87% of high school students receive less than the recommended amount of sleep. Sleep deprivation can impair mental functions that are necessary...

Are Gap Years Helpful?

...senior year of high school from pressure to get into a competitive college, he quit his lacrosse team and let his grades slip.” He deferred his admission to the University of Iowa and enrolled in the National Outdoor Leadership School, a wilderness skills-training program. “He took a semester in Nepal studying language, living in a rural village and climbing in the Himalayas.” He gained the ability to enjoy hard challenges and stated, “By the time I got back to school, I was ready to be in school.” An increasing amount of students are taking a year off after graduating high school, known as a gap year. The article, “Should Your Student Consider Taking a Gap Year Before Starting College?,” states, “A gap year, sometimes called a year out, or year off, or bridging year, is a transition year, usually between high school and college, when the student takes time to do something else.” Many students believe that college is the next step when graduating high school, but taking a gap year is becoming a growing trend. High school students should take a year off before entering college because they will be motivated to return to school, because they will gain new skills, and because they will have time to decide on a career interest. Taking a gap year reignites one sense of curiosity for learning. Many students choose to take a break from the regular twelve year education to chase a dream, or to relax. Shellenbarger states that, “Burnout from the competitive pressure of high school and a desire...

...all my middle school and high school education and never would I have thought that what I once disliked as a student would be of such importance to my future career. Being able to write, read, and understand, simply becomes the basics to learning and getting through college, and I, myself am still acquiring the necessary skills to become a better writer. In fact, one of the goals I plan to accomplish through my college education is to become a better writer. I can read and understand what I am reading pretty good but when it comes to writing I feel like I still lack some skills and expertise, and certainly being able to write will be of great value to my future career. Writing allows us to communicate our ideas, our beliefs, our understanding of a subject, and our dreams. Through this process one can inform, persuade, express, entertain, and explain, and this is why I believe writing is so important, especially when you have dedicated yourself to a life-long learning experience. School and from my experiences in writing I can say I’ve had but minimal training, just the basics. Never have I ever written something for fun or for my own good, every time I write it’s for a grade, not for my own pleasure nor for a greater purpose than just a grade, and surely this has to change. Ever sense I have become extremely interested in learning more about the world around me, understanding what is happening and why its happening, has made me curious, and slowly I am starting to put the puzzles...

Argumentative Essay: The Value Of A College Education

...When a student graduates high school, they want to make a decision that will be beneficial to their future. However, some students don’t want to go to college, but if a high school graduate does not go to college and earn a degree, it will be more difficult to find a well paying job. A college education can be very valuable for many reasons. Whether you go to college or not, doesn’t just affect your future, but it can affect your health, and your future financially. It is your responsibility to go to college, not only for you, but for the future of our country. First, in our society, the tradition is to go to preschool, then to elementary, then middle school, then high school, and then to college. As kids we believe that’s how our lives would be, almost as if it were set in stone. But conforming to that ethic is in no way an atrocious thing, whether you agree with it or not, a college education will support you in the long run. For example, according to College Board’s “5 Ways Ed Pays”, if you go to college and get a degree, you are more likely to earn an average of $22,000 more per year. And that’s not just your...

Philosophy Esssy

...Philosophy of Education I have asked myself over and over again what has driven me to become a teacher and why I want to have such an impact on students’ lives. Personally, growing up in the urban school district, not in such an influential environment I was exposed to many unhealthy lifestyles and my education was effected tremendously. I did not know the importance of going to college to pursue a college education, and I always believed that once I received my high school diploma that all of my hard work was done. Over the years after I graduated high school I witnessed my father go back to college to receive his Bachelor’s Degree which inspired me in many of ways to return back to school. I was always so skeptical, and until this day I still have doubts within myself that I will let my past childhood experiences with my education dictate my success in the future. I have always had the desire to teach, and have the ability to impact children’s lives in a positive way, which is the one of the main reasons that I strive so hard to reach my goal. I narrowed my chose with just one item; with studying the different philosophies of education I would consider my philosophy of education to be Progressivism. This philosophy of education helps the students learn more effectively to situations dealing with their personal lives. I believe that children will broaden their knowledge in society and also have the ability to improve their social skills. In the hypothetical American...

...discussing the Act of 2001, which received the name “No Child Left Behind” signed by President Bush at the beginning of the year 2002. NCLB is said to be “a reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, the central federal law in pre-collegiate education” (Mathis, 2003, pg. 679). The special aid program for disadvantaged students was the first to expand the ESEA. NCLB was formed in an answer to the reaction of public concern of education, with stricter guidelines for testing, and a stronger importance for highly qualified teachers’. Because of the public reaction about education the key aims of the “No Child Left Behind” Act is to improve as much as possible the situation in education and provide sufficient support for the disadvantaged students. The NCLB does not allow a single public school to be left out of this document. The Act consists of several measures described, aiming at driving broad gains in students’ achievements and at making schools more accountable for the progress of their students (West & Peterson, 2003)....

Why Collge Is Important to Me

...age of sixteen I dropped out of high school. I was not being challenged, the work was boring and the drama of high school was more than I wanted to be a part of. I had dreams of becoming a model and someday having a family. I began working immediately and was very happy. At the age of 18, I became pregnant and got married and soon had two children. I don’t believe that I am a typical college student, most students are looking to further their career or make more money; to find that new career. For me, it’s not about a new job or more money, but a sense of personal accomplishment and a desire to be an example to my kids. College View advises “more than ever, attending college provides opportunities for graduates which are not as widespread to those who have not received a higher education.” I didn’t believe that a college education was important. I thought that having a job, being a mom and being a functioning part of the society was enough. Until now, it was. I now have four children and each of them are starting their futures with a college education. I want to teach my children how important a college education is. According to an article in the NY Times, “The pay gap between college graduates and everyone else reached a record high last year, according to the new data, which is based on an analysis of Labor Department statistics by the Economic Policy Institute in Washington.” I have experienced this “pay gap” personally over my time in the work force. I have seen others...

Technology In The Classroom

...Is $200-$800 too much to spend on each student to much to implement new technology into schools? Laptops and tablets help give students unlimited resources that textbooks do not offer. On the other side laptops and tablets are very expensive to install into a schools curriculum and have many possible distractions. A compromise or mediation would be to slowly incorporate the new technology into middle schools to maximize the longevity of the devices. Also starting implementing the new technology in middle school will give high schools time to adjust their curriculum. Students are in need of laptops or tablets because without them their learning is restricted. Many schools are in dire need of new and improved technology for many reasons like: unlimited online resources, new learning methods, and helps with the learning environment. Tablets and laptops greatest strength is the access to unlimited online resources. In Willie Mata’s article, The Importance of Technology in the Classroom, he states, “The Internet gives students instant access to answers beyond what’s in their textbooks. In fact, today’s kids are already familiar with “Googling-it” to find answers to questions.” Mata addresses how...

Reasons Why People Attend College

...opportunities, growth and development, and the opportunity to gain valuable career resources during a person’s time attending college. In recent years the state of the economy has been down, which is leading to job losses and the high increase of unemployment in our country. Making the choice to attend college can give one the opportunity to fulfill his or her dreams and benefit from learning skills one will need in their desired field of study. The first reason to attend college is for more career opportunities. Attending college and receiving your degree will open doors that may have never been opened if not enrolled. Better careers can also lead to higher wages. If one has a family, this can be important. One may also have all the appropriate skills and knowledge for jobs but may get overlooked without having a college degree. “The U.S. has been transformed from a manufacturing-based economy to an economy based on the knowledge, and the importance of a college education today can be compared to that of a high school education forty years ago,” writes Jeff McGuire. The second reason people attend college is for growth and development. Interacting with classmates, reading, and writing are all ways to help one grow his or her mind and to develop different techniques to be useful in whatever career path one takes. One may consider themselves average or below average with their school work, but a person that works hard and dedicates themselves in his or her studies will help strengthen...

Personal Narrative: My Immigration To The United States

...I was born San Pedro Sula, Honduras, a city that has more bullet shells on the ground than people in the city. It is a place where lying, cheating, and stealing were at the top of everyone’s agenda. These were the three essentials to survive day in and day out. I remember on my walks to school I would see kids just like me collecting plastic bottles and metal cans to sell for scraps at the recycling plant. Sometimes I would join them because I thought that was what kids my age did for fun. From my house every night, I would hear the screams of innocent people being raped or murdered. I would hear the boots of army troops stomping on the dusty roads and rapid shots of automatic weapons. It wasn’t until I immigrated to the United States when I realized that these events had become less commonplace....
