“I cannot finish my homework; I just end up creeping on Facebook!” My roommate, Rachel, slamming her computer shut and headed towards the kitchen to find a snack that could continue killing time, instead of finishing her last bit of homework. As college students we spend a huge amount of our time sitting in front of our laptops working on school work. We are expected to use the internet to research, read, and learn on our own time. Spending all this time in front of the internet opens many opportunities to be able to learn and grow, but also opens many temptations to ‘surf the web’ and get side-tracked. 74% of Americans use the internet on a frequent basis, which makes up about 13% of the users worldwide. Many of Americans might not be able to make it through their normal day without that internet. Does this mean that as a society that the internet is making a noticeable impact in our lives? The internet came about so quickly and is still considered somewhat new to society. In Nicholas Carr’s (2008) article, Is Google Making Us Stupid he said, “For me, as for others, the Net is becoming a universal medium, the conduit for most of the information that flows through my eyes and ears and into my mind. The advantages of having immediate access to such an incredibly rich store of information are many, and they’ve been widely described and duly applauded.” This statement is correct in the sense that the internet is full of a lot of useful information that can help us learn and be put to good use. However, the internet may also often be used as an avid time waster, rather than a tool to help us gain knowledge.
Using the internet in our everyday lives for work, school, and connection can be a tricky task to complete without getting side tracked. Using to internet for useful reasons requires a good amount of self-control, time management, and focus. Steven Pinker (2010) compared people’s use of the internet to the book, You Are What You Eat. The statement ‘You Are What You Eat’ deals with the fact that people who eat terrible, in return, look terrible, those who choose to eat healthy have a healthy looking body and lifestyle. The comparable idea that one’s internet use reflects who they are, demonstrates how one who spends their time using twitter might have thoughts reflecting quick status or bullet ideas’ one who spends their time watching violent movie or games may shows signs of acting in violent matter. People are spending more time on the internet now than in actual face-to-face contact with people. We are constantly emailing instead of calling on the telephone, keeping up on Facebook instead of meeting up in person, and couples are spending their evening playing games on their phones or computer instead of spending time together.
The internet has helped us to keep things short and simple. We now don’t have to watch full news stories because later that night there will be a short clip with key points, and we can find big news stories through others tweets and status updates. One might think this is great because we can save time while still getting the same information, while others can see this as a curse because we are spending less time educating our own selves. Nicholas Carr brings up the point that it is becoming more and more difficult for us to take the time and focus long enough to sit and read an entire article, “The more they use the Web, the more they have to fight to stay focused on long pieces of writing.” The more reading we do on the web, the less work we have to do in researching ideas. This causes us to not have to think nearly as much as we would if we were reading out of a textbook; all of the ideas are linked to each other, less than a click away. The internet, in a way, changes the way we think and read. It has started to skew how we perceive things and what we get out of what we are reading. Carr quoted Maryanne Wolf, a scholar and author who studies the origins of reading and language-learning, who reminds us that when we are growing up speech is an instinctive skill that we are born with but, we all must gain the intelligence it takes to read. We have to continually be furthering our knowledge and training our minds to recognize and translate what it is that we are reading. When we are reading bullet pointed ideas rather than articles, we are not fully developing that particular part of our brain, this is slowly changing how we read and learn things.
One main focus and benefit of the internet is the research it allows us to get done. Rather than going to a library and searching through multiple books to find our information, all we have to do is simply type in our topic and we will be directed to multiple websites and articles revolving around our topic. As college students we are required to do research on a daily basis, Pinker (2008) states that, “It’s not as if habits of deep reflection, through research and rigorous reasoning ever came naturally to people. They must be acquired in special institutions, which we call universities, and maintained with constant upkeep, which we call analysis, criticism and debate.” Deep reflection and research isn’t something that comes easily but it is something that the internet has made more available to us. We attend universities to gain this knowledge he talks about here, but the internet can be used as an aid in helping us learn more and extend our knowledge in specific subjects. The web can help us to manage our thoughts, gain insights, and retrieve specific information pertaining to a study.
President David A. Bednar gave a talk in 2010 titled Learning to Love Learning, in this talk we learn how truly important learning for ourselves is in this lifetime. When one looks at seeking a greater knowledge, we have to realize that knowledge is our greatest possession; it is all we take with us when we return to our Heavenly Father. Our Father in Heaven has created this brilliant universe with infinite opportunities to learn and increase our understanding and knowledge. When we are using tools in the right sense for the right reasons they can be a good thing for us. The internet may be full information that is unnecessary for us to know, but used in the right manner, it is also full of great resources and information to help us learn and grow. David McCullough’s (2008) article, The Love of Learning states, “Information is useful. Information is often highly interesting. Information has value, sometimes great value. The right bit of information at the opportune moment can be worth a fortune. Information can save time and effort. Information can save your life. The value of information, facts, figures, and the like, depends on what we make of it- on judgments.” We find all kinds of information through the internet, it is more so what we do with the information we find. We can choose to fill our brains with information that is useless to us and will take up space, or we can choose to use the internet to find information that we can value to help us grow and learn that much more.
As a society, we don’t always make the right choices or best judgment. This is something that is relative to each individual person. The internet opens many doors to us, as well as many opportunities to learn, but that doesn’t always mean we take those opportunities and use them to their fullest. Using the web has definitely changed the way live our lives, we have become a much more ‘quick moving’ society and maybe even more distracted but, we also have a new world opened to us that can be a huge benefit if used correctly. It takes wicked amounts of self control and boundaries to use the web in a useful way. If we are engaged in finding new knowledge and opening our horizons of research, it can be a great blessing to us. As in all good things, we must limit our use. If we are not overloading our time spent on the internet it will not become a negative vibe in our life. The web is increasingly becoming a great way to help us to learn and find research if we have the right mind set and intentions of learning and furthering our knowledge. We should not be limiting our research and time to only the internet, but also not viewing it as a bad aspect in our life. “Make the love of learning central to your life.” Use the internet for the good it has to offer and restrain yourself from the bad it can bring. Sure, the internet has had a big impact on society over the past few years but that impact can be looked at and used as a blessing rather that a nuisance.

The Impact Of Internet Education

...Introduction The changes in technology as evidenced by increased use of the internet have several social and economic implications for different aspects of people’s life. An analysis of the impacts of the internet demands a close examination of its influence on education, culture and social life, entertainment and economy among others. The subject itself is highly debatable due to the conflicting perceptions that people have of the implications of the internet. For some, its use is associated with free access to information and enhanced economic growth while others consider that the technology leads to undesirable consequences such as cultural erosion and cyber crimes (Bughin et al., 2011). Therefore, any attempt to argue that the internet...

Impact of the Internet on Education

...Analyzing The Impact Of The Internet Capella University MBA-FP6004 Analyzing The Impact Of The Internet In today's world, employers are looking for a higher standard of education from job applicants. This is forcing high school seniors to pursue a college degree; an increase in demand causes an increase in tuition cost. This adds pressure in the economy, due to the growing amount of student loans and parent’s looking at creative options to cover the cost, such as refinancing their homes. But then, the advancement of technology could change this; however, there are complicated implication that will need to be addressed. Based on my research the major factor of the tuition increases is the reduction of state funding. The reduced state funding impacts universities; they provide 53 percent of the revenue. When the funding is cut, universities will have to cut educational or other services, and raise tuition to cover the gap. The average spend rate, per student is 23% or $2,026, which are less than the recession time. This inward turn is propelling the cost from the state to the student and influencing the universities to look at ways of covering the shortage. See Figure 1, every state except Alaska and North Dakota has cut per-spending funding. [pic] One approach is to increase the acceptance rate of out-of-state students. On average, the in-state tuition cost of a bachelor’s degree is $60,000, and the out-of-state is in the range of $100,000...

Analyzing the Impact of the Internet

...| Analyzing the Impact of the Internet | MBA-FP6004_SandersAngela_Assessment2 | Angela Sanders 6-15-2015 | The main issues facing education today are finances and technology. In this paper, I will discuss the impact of finances on the institutions, as well as students and families. What is the role of technology in the education environment? What type of impact is this having and is it a positive one? I will answer these questions first from my findings of surveying educators, parents and students; then, I will look at the current literature. In finding out the answers, I reached out to ten individuals that are educators (3), parents (4), and students (3) to see how they view the impact of technology on education, as well as the financial impact, and the ethical implications of the changes we are seeing in education. From the information I gathered, there we’re a lot of mixed answers, but I did learn that everyone does have an opinion and is very passionate about this topic. From all three educators, I was informed that the pros to technology utilized in the classroom is that it’s another avenue for students that might require a different format of learning; it’s been beneficial. One school district has been overwhelmed with students because they do not have enough teachers, or classrooms to facilitate learning, and a millage increase was voted down that would’ve allowed them to build more classrooms. They have decided for the 2015-2016 school year to utilize...

Impact of the Internet on Education

...For the majority of people, it is difficult to imagine what life would be like without the internet. The world of education has also undergone tremendous change since the advent of the internet. It allows students to quickly obtain a vast amount of information on every subject. They also get the convenience of going to class and completing assignments, permitting them to schedule their time with great flexibility. The internet has become one of the easiest, fastest and most effective tools that can be used to explore and comprehend more about the world; however, it is not without problems. The uses of the internet by students changes their thinking patterns, distracts their attention and reduces their interpersonal skills. First of all, let us consider that the internet and search engines make students become lazy in their thinking. Carr (2010) writes that the internet can distract and interrupt people and make them become shallow and dispersive thinkers. Students have come to rely more and more on the internet because using search engines to get information is quicker and more direct than analyzing the information first. Due to distractions and interruptions, people lose the ability to think deeply and distinctively because their brains are not able to create powerful and extensive neural connections (Carr, 2010). In addition, the internet offers some new methods of plagiarism. Students can download free resources and turn in assignments without citations; they can even acquire...

...Analyzing the Impact of the Internet By: Yaribel Velez Capella University Analyzing the Impact of the Internet “When I decided to obtain my MBA I was a bit concern with the problems all students are facing in today’s economy. I thought to myself “another loan” could I bear to afford a student loan with a high interest rate? Not many single mothers seek to gain a profession due to the rise in college tuition and high interest rates on loans. Though, I decided to pursue with my degree which will benefit me in the future. The government intervention with Obama lowering rates of federal loans back in August 2013, but I wish for more financial assistance availability. My personal opinion is that financial assistance for higher education should be a more important base topic in today’s world. There are more and more cut back on college funds each year, and to make matters worse the real cost of college has risen steadily since the 1940s. Government aides and Pell grants have been reduced significantly; and obtaining free grants has become harder. Schools have raised tuition; which drops down the students enrolling in school due to loan affordability or not enough aids available. Over the past years, access to higher education has expanded from being privileged at birth, to having a certain qualification. The trouble, however, is that a lot of parents don’t know where they missed it, so they also advice their children to do the same things they did that didn’t work. I am anointed of God to show you the right things to do so you won’t experience the same limitations those before you had. You don’t go to school so you would get a job and be rich. That has never worked for anybody. You go to school so you can learn, become intelligent and enlightened, and know how to get more knowledge that will make you a blessing and a helper in your world. But it’s not the academic knowledge you acquire in school that will make you rich; what will put you over and above the general class is your decision to be a lifter and a giver, not a taker. Whatever you do, be the best at it. If you render services, do better than what they pay you for. That way, you’ll be on your way to being very rich. Stop looking for a job that will pay you more. Impact of Internet on Workplace

...CASE STUDY In February 2009, at the University of California, led by Small, multi-stage research was conducted to look at how the internet affects efficiency and throughput at work place. Based on the results of the research, Small came to the conclusion that surfing the web can be used as a stimulant for the brain in the elderly. It has a big advantage over the plain reading of the text, because it involves many more cognitive functions: “The results are very encouraging, new technologies may have a beneficial psychological effect on older people. Searching for information on the Internet involves complex brain functions that will help to practice and develop it. For example, through the advantages and disadvantages of internet purchasing and conventional retailing, consumers' different attitudes and preferences and statistics of recent years containing data relating to the issue. Internet shopping currently is massively popular. New Zealand is likely to be contributing to the online retail industry 3.19 billion dollars, with the total amount of of nearly two million Kiwis using internet shopping at the end of 2012 (Kiwis $3.19b online, 2012). The main idea here is that consumers prefer the convenience, and take the advantage of less taxing because of most online stores being overseas (Albertson, 2012). The whole industry therefore expands at a high rate.
