Elvis Presley was an American singer and actor.
Regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century, he is often referred to as "the King of Rock and Roll.

Born on January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi, Elvis Aron Presley came from very humble beginnings. (He later changed the spelling of his middle name to the biblical form of Aaron.) Presley was supposed to be a twin, but his brother, Jesse Garon (sometimes spelled Jessie) was stillborn. Elvis Presley grew up to become one of the biggest names in rock 'n' roll. By the mid-1950s, he appeared on the radio, television and the silver screen. Presley received his first guitar as a gift from his mother on his 11th birthday in 1946 and had his first taste of musical success a few years later when he won a talent show at Humes High School in Memphis.
Throughout his amazing career, Presley helped popularize rock 'n' roll music in America. He also won three Grammy Awards for his gospel recordings. A major musical force, Presley had 18 No. 1 singles, including "Don't Be Cruel," "Good Luck Charm" and "Suspicious Minds," as well as countless gold and platinum albums. He was one of the first performers inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1986). But Elvis has been recognized for his contributions several musical genres, most notably rock, country and gospel. In 1998, Presley was posthumously inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame; three years later, he was posthumously inducted into the Gospel Music Association's Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

On August 16, 1977, at age 42, he died of heart failure. Since his death, Presley has remained one of the world's most popular music icons. No other artist ever has or ever will be referred to as the King of Rock and Roll.

...Metamorphosis of King Lear Through the course of the play, King Lear goes through a process of attaining self-knowledge. With this knowledge, he goes through a metamorphosis of person, much like a caterpillar's change into a butterfly. In the beginning, King Lear's vanity, and the image and exercise of power dominate his person. But a series of losses (based on his own bad decisions), a wise "fool", a powerful storm, a seemingly crazy man, and the death of one who truly loved him clear his vision and allow him to see himself and the world as they truly are. The pain and suffering endured by Lear eventually tears down his strength and sanity. Lear is not as strong, arrogant, and filled with pride as he seems in the beginning of the play. Instead he a is weak, scared and confused old man. At the end of the play Lear has completely lost his sanity with the loss of his daughter, Cordelia and this is the breaking point that leads Lear to his death. In the beginning, King Lear shows his need for praise is how he chooses to divide his kingdom among his daughters. The one who praises him with the most "love" shall receive the largest area of land. This is even more evident when considering that Lear already has divided up the kingdom before the praising even begins, as he gives each daughter her land before hearing the next daughter's praise. Thus the entire arbitration is just a show and an ego boost to himself. It is because of his love for praise that makes him react so strongly...

Kings

...Should the Kings Stay In Sacramento? For many years, there has been an ongoing debate about moving the Sacramento Kings to Seattle and becoming the Supersonics. Although it may sound like a great idea, there are good and bad consequences that come with them moving or staying at either city. The reason for such a controversial debate revolves around money and fans. A group led by the investor Chris Hansen had a deal with the Kings owners with the idea of moving the team to Seattle. Once the idea became known by everyone, the debate grew. The cities of Seattle and Sacramento both want the NBA franchise for many reasons. Having an NBA franchise in Sacramento will help the economy and fans, and will keep the only professional sports team in Sacramento. The reason Seattle wants the Kings franchise is because it will benefit Seattle’s economy. The franchise will be playing the next couple of seasons in Key Arena, and, in the meantime, a new $490 million arena will be built in downtown Seattle. According to a column in the Bleacher Report, “The public will pay $200 million and that money will be paid back using ticket sales and rent money. If not, Hansen himself will be responsible” (Lingberg). Hansen is getting the public on his side by using them to get the Kings to come to Seattle. With the Kings becoming the Supersonics it will help boost Seattle’s economy by opening jobs at the new arena, the expenses that will be made at the arena, and all the Supersonic merchandise that will...

King Lear and King Oedipus

...William Shakespeare’s King Lear and Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex are two classic pieces of literature that are worth studying. This essay will discuss how free will and destiny function in the two plays. First, the plays will be introduced and analyzed separately to provide a basis for contrast and comparison. Once the foundation is established, more advanced ideas will be discussed, such as the concept of evil and literal and figurative sight. Oedipus Rex will be discussed first. The role of destiny is very obvious is this play. The plot is built around destiny; when Oedipus hears that his destiny is to murder his father and marry his mother, he sets out to confirm this prediction and then prevent it. In his attempt to avoid his fate, he unwittingly commits the very acts that were predicted. The actual logistics of the offense are quite impressive. Both Oedipus and his parents work independently of each other to avoid the outcome, and their actions tragically work together to make it possible. The reader is slapped in the face with the core of the theme, which is that the fate of man is inevitable. Since Oedipus was fated to commit these crimes, he cannot do otherwise. The role of fate and free will is much more complex in Shakespeare’s King Lear. A quick perusal of the plot gives a story of good and evil characters exercising their own free wills. King Lear foolishly divides up his kingdom to his two deceitful, older daughters and ignores Cordelia, his honest, dutiful...

Burger King

...Introduction Burger King is the world’s largest flame broiled fast food restaurant chain. As of 2011, Burger King operates restaurants in 12,300 locations serving over 11 million guests daily in 76 countries and territories worldwide (Burger King , 2011). Burger King’s core competency is its unique flame-broiled burgers. This process is difficult to imitate and helps differentiates Burger King from other fast food chains that fry their burgers instead. So much so in fact, no other fast food provider flame broils their burgers. In addition, Burger King allows and encourages consumers to customize the unique flame-broiled burgers with options to their liking. This creates a win-win situation for both Burger King and the consumer. Burger King has the benefit of offering a different product and the consumer benefits by having numerous burger options. Although Burger King has expanded its menu selections, they have remained true to their original flame-broiled burgers. This product gives them an advantage over other fast food chains. Facing intense competition and limited growth opportunities domestically, Burger King hopes strengthen their competitive stance through international expansion. By mid 2009, Burger King was not in any of the following countries: France, India, Nigeria, Pakistan and South Africa. Compare these countries as possible future locations for Burger King. In looking for new countries to enter, Burger King needs to identify countries that fit its ideal demographic...

...the age of 18. Tutankhamen (King Tut) was buried in a tomb discovered by an English archeologist named Howard Carter, on November 26, 1922. Inside the tomb lied King Tut within a quartzite sarcophagus- three separate coffins place one inside the other (Sayre, 2012). This essay includes scientific, historical, and other theories in how Tutankhamen died, includes two different theories and perspectives of how Tutankhamen died, and explain the theory of which of the two that is the most convincing towards the death of Tutankhamen. According to Archaeologist Chris Naunton, director of Egypt Exploration Society, learned that king tut body was burned. Chris discovered and studied the notes from Howard Carter and Carter assistant Lord Carnarvon (Carnarvon was also there at the discovery). The burning of the body was from the ritual of mummification of a king. Chris determined that King Tut died of an injury, driving a chariot to fast. The National geographic (2013) presume the king was maybe killed by a kick to the chest and ribs by a horse, since horses pulled the chariots. Both incidents sums the details up as which, King Tut died of an injury and not a disease or any other way. From the x-rays, CT scans, and other examinations King Tut died of an injury. The chariot the King was riding could have flipped over, someone could have ran into the King doing battle, or the horse could have ran the King over of kicked him. The injury in the death of the King is supported by the examinations...

King Lear

...King Lear (Free Essay No Copyright) In King Lear, the unnatural elements seem to always dominate the natural elements throughout the play. There exists a reversal of order in the play where the evil prosper in the downfall of the good, and where man's life is meaningless and arbitrary. King Lear, the tragic hero, dies in the end despite the torment and agony he had to endure to regenerate and repent. But it is the worthless destruction of countless other lives because of Lear's own personal tragedy that supports the view of the brutality and the meaningless of man's life in the play. Life in Lear's universe is brutal, and at times, merciless. All this has been brought about by the reign of evil in the play. The natural order of things has been reversed to such an extent that many of society's cherished values have been neglected and confused. Evil characters such as Edmund is praised by Gloucester for exposing the "treachery" of Edgar, while Edgar is denounced for his "villany". Love, based on selflessness and truth, is weighted in materialistic terms. A man's life, then, can only be considered arbitrary and meaningless in the chaotic universe of King Lear. The character of Lear and Gloucester die in a state of joy, but they nevertheless die in the end resulf. Both had immeasurable sufferings for their follies, and yet both had gained wisdom - patience, insight, love - from their experiences. Both were shown to have the capacity for comparison during their ordeals...

King Lear

...KING LEAR Act 1-3 Review Act 1, Scene 1 Analysis The first scene sets up the action and the main theme of the play. King Lear has three daughters, and he requires from each a profession of love in exchange for a reward of inheritance. The two daughters who love him least and who are most dishonest easily fulfill his requirements, speaking elegantly but emptily of their great love for him. Lear is pleased with this superficial and deceitful proclamation of love. His honest daughter, Cordelia, will not give Lear a false declaration. She loves him, she says, simply as a father, no more and no less. Her love, unlike her sisters', is a true love, but she is unwilling to exaggerate it in false language. Lear cannot understand this, and he immediately turns on Cordelia, his most beloved daughter, and disowns her. Lear is a flawed character, valuing the external declaration of love over true and proven love. His actions are so unreasonable that the reader may wonder why Cordelia loves him, aside from her duty as his daughter and subject. Act 1, Scene 2 Analysis The second scene reveals the subplot of Edmund's machinations to wheedle his father's lands away from him. As in the story of King Lear and his daughters, Gloucester must decide which of his children is truly loyal to him. The son that seems loyal only appears loyal through his deceit. He lies and manipulates in order to appear loving and loyal. Edgar, the truly loyal son, will appear disloyal through his brother's...

The Lion King

...heading for a single destination. Elephants plodded steadily. Antelope leaped through the grass. Giraffes loped. Cheetahs raced. Ants marched in a single line, while huge flocks of flamingoes winged across the sky. They were all journeying to Pride Rock to celebrate the birth of King Mufasa’s son. Above the gathering, on the top of Pride Rock, Rafiki, the wise, old mystic, approached King Mufasa and Queen Sarabi. He cracked open a gourd, dipped his finger in the liquid, and made a special mark on the infant’s forehead. Then he carried the cub to the edge of the rock and held it high. A loud cheer rose from the plain. Elephants trumpeted. Monkeys screeched. Zebras, rhinos, and a host of other animals stamped their hooves. Then a hush fell over the gathering. Together, the animals of Mufasa’s kingdom knelt before Simba, their new prince. Yet one family member did not attend the ceremony. Mufasa’s brother, Scar, had spent the entire morning toying with a mouse. He was just about to eat it when Zazu, the king’s majordomo, appeared. Startled, Scar turned, and the mouse scampered away. “Now look, Zazu, you’ve made me lose my lunch!” Scar complained. “You’ll lose more than that when the king gets through with you!” But Scar wasn’t listening. He was still hungry, and Zazu was beginning to look pretty tasty. Scar pounced, but before he had time to eat Zazu, a voice commanded, “Drop him!” Scar released the bird. “Why, if it isn’t my big brother,” he sneered. “Sarabi...

Stephen King

...Stephen King is an American author of horror and suspense novels. He has sold over 350 million books worldwide. Many of his books have been made into movies and television shows. Recently Mister King was kind enough to talk about his life and writings in a candid interview. The results of the interview reveal some interesting facts about one of America’s most successful author. He was born as Stephen Edward King on September 21, 1947, in Portland, Maine. Most of his stories take place in his native state of Maine. When asked about his education, he proudly admitted he graduated from the University of Maine, with Bachelor of Arts degree in English, in 1970. As a child King witnessed his friend being hit by, and killed, a train. He claims that many people credit this traumatizing event as the inspiration for his dark stories, but King denies this. He says that the chief inspiration for writing horror stories came when he discovered a collection of short stories, called The Lurker in the Shadows, in his attic, while rummaging around with his brother. He says while looking at the cover art of the book, he realized what he wanted to do with his life. King revealed that he began writing for fun while in high school. He would sometimes sell writings, about movies he had seen, to his friends. While in high school, King had his first published work. “I Was a Teenage Grave Robber”, was presented in four parts, three of which were published. While in college, King wrote a column...

...Burger King Burger King, often abbreviated as BK, is a global chain of hamburger fast food restaurants headquartered in unincorporated Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The company began in 1953 as Insta-Burger King, a Jacksonville, Florida-based restaurant chain. Over the next half century, the company would change hands four times, with its third set of owners, a partnership of TPG Capital, Bain Capital, and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners, taking it public in 2002. In late 2010, 3G Capital of Brazil acquired a majority stake in BK in a deal valued at $3.26 billion (USD). The new owners promptly initiated a restructuring of the company to reverse its fortunes. The Burger King menu has evolved from a basic offering of burgers, French fries, sodas, and milkshakes in 1954, to a larger, more diverse set of product offerings. After knowing the good facts about burger king I wanted see where is burger king lacking behind. So I visited the burger king outlet which is inside the international plaza. The reason why burger king is lacking behind is because of its old store and with its old brand image. King Lear

...Pavith Baskaran Ms. Marsh ENG 4U1 September 26 2011 Sanity in the Face of Relativity In our customary everyday lives, and by having a religious and ethical lifestyle, one is required by humanity to display socially acceptable qualities of sanity. Sanity is the ability to think and behave in a normal rational manner, and to exhibit rational behaviour. In Shakespeare’s play “King Lear” however, it is shown that “sanity” is a relative concept that can vary in meaning. Relating to the outside world, utilizing present issues of many countries, sanity being based on relativity, can be greatly exemplified. By performing an in depth analysis of different perspectives on sanity, it can be revealed who is sane and who is not. In the dramatic play, “King Lear”, King Lear assumes that his own character completely mirrors the quality of sanity. Displaying sane characteristics requires one to be completely assertive of the decisions that one makes personally, Lear’s actions are consciously made by him, and he knows exactly what he wants to say. He decides to divide his own kingdom and properties, and he wishes all three of his daughters to express their love for him. While Goneril and Regan claim their (faux) admiration of their father Lear is tremendous, Cordelia expressed nothing but her own genuine feelings. Unable to either express or translate her feelings into words, Cordelia explains to Lear that she is unable to verbally profess her love. In reply, Lear bursts with cursing...
