People spend their lives searching for happiness. Some find happiness in the company of family or friends. Other people find happiness in material possesions. And many others consider finding true love the ultimate happiness. Everyone is on their spiritual quest to find it, and sometimes, when they find happiness they do not know how to handle it. In Anton Chekov’s short story “The Lady with the Pet Dog,” Chekov let’s us into the mind of the character Dmitry Gurov as he seeks to compensate his unhappy life in his many affairs with women. In one of his many affairs with Anna Sergeyevna we see how Dmitry changes his views and attitude as he falls in love. In the beginning of “The Lady with the Pet Dog,” the character Dmitry Gurov is an unhappy narcissistic and a misogynist who is easily bored with women and his lover Anna Sergeyevna. By the end of the story, however, he changes his views of Anna when he realizes he loves her.
Before meeting Anna, Dmitry is displayed in an unflattering manner. He is very unhappy with his life and marriage even though his wife was described as “a tall, erect woman with dark eyebrows, stately and dignified and, as she said of herself, intellectual” (156). She seemed like a great woman with beauty and intelligence, yet, he was still dissatisfied, “he privately considered her of limited intelligence, narrow-minded, dowdy, was afraid of her, and did not like to be home” (156). Dmitry is very critical of his wife he turns all her attributes into negative qualities. Dmitry’s harsh criticism of his wife further shows his dissatisfaction with himself. He cannot acknowledge her qualities because he is unhappy with himself. In search of happiness, Gurov felt the need to have affairs to please himself. For example, “in the company of me he was bored and ill at ease, he was chilly and...

...what he or she does, nature versus nurture. When it comes down to it people automatically see nature as being what environmentally influences them, and nurture as the way they are taught to feel and think about things. In the battle between nature and nurture “It is nature that wins”. The short story “The lady with the Pet dog” by Joyce Carol Oates illiterates it. The short story starts with a woman named Anna, who is at an event with her husband when she sees a man in the crowd and suddenly is anxious and in distress about it. She goes home her mind passes over him while she is with her husband and it is made apparent that the man she saw was at one time her lover. The author describes Anna and her husband laying there when she closes her eyes and thinks about the other man. “always this hot flashing of shame between them, the shame of her husband’s near failure, the clumsiness of his love” (771) she is unhappy in the marriage as she feels nothing towards the husband as he caresses her .the story then flashes back to several months prior. This time Anna is in Nantucket Were she met her lover at the beach. She was always alone until the man with the blind son and the dog came and started a conversation with her, the nature of a man seeing a lonely woman is to go and talk to her and this is what the lover...

Point of View

...October 31, 2012 Point of View The short story, The Lady with the Pet Dog, written by Anton Chekhov is narrated in the omniscient, third person style. “From this point of view, the narrator can move from place to place and pass back and forth through time” (136). Also, “this narrator can report the characters’ thoughts and feelings aw well as what they say and do” (136). The all knowing speaker of this story tells us, the readers, all about the whirl wind affair of Dmitry Dmitrich Gurov and Anna Sergeyevna in such a way that we can draw our own conclusions about their characters. The narrator, who plays no character part in this story, does seem to know everything about the lovebirds. S/he also explains each character’s personality and quips portions of their conversations. The conversations that we are told about give the reader insight into the feelings of Dmitry and Anna. We learn about their comings and goings from the narrator. In Yalta, the narrator tells us of the many social scenes like the esplanade, confectionery shop and a public garden. The narrator sees into the romantic situations of Dmitry and Anna’s hotel room encounters and the private conversations that also welcome the reader into the relationship. The pain and restraints of each character’s home and life are addresses by the narrator also. Whether ensconced in safe houses and relationships or free to roam while on vacation the reader learns it all from the narrator. The point of view of......

Community Change

...here about a year in a half. There are many families that have more than one child and a lot of mixed families and blended families as well. There are many different religion preferences as well as different cultural backgrounds. Most families have pets in my community and on the weekends everyone’s seems to be walking their dogs. From the outside looking in it really looks like a perfect community to raise children. Our family moved in about a year in a half ago we were the third family to move into our community and the neighbors seemed really nice one neighbor even put welcome cards in everyone’s mailboxes, I was so excited to live in this community. We have three young boys ages 13, 11, and 6 so when we found out that our neighbors had three boys we were excited because they had someone to play with. I also have two teenage girls ages 17, and 15 they were quickly bored because as other people started moving in their kids were boys as well so my daughters pretty much just stayed in the house. My oldest needed a way to make money so she became the neighborhood babysitter, so that worked out perfect for her and now she is my neighbors on call nanny. The problems in our community started happening about six months ago when a lady moved in two houses from mine; she has five boys in which they all are autistic so she doesn’t let them play with the other kids she keeps them in her back yard. My boys didn’t understand why she wouldn’t let them play so they took it......

Business

...Good morning to my teacher and all my friends. Today I'm here to talk about my favourite pet.My favorite pet would have to be my dog Happy. When I got him I was 11 or 12. I don’t remember the day that well. But I do remember seeing her. A lady was letting puppies out of their cages to let me see them. I remember a poodle walking down the hallway. When I said no the lady took it back and let Happy out. Happy came running down the hall. His furry white ears bouncing up and down the whole way. I knew he was the one. Colour of his coat is white. He has big eyes. He looks energetic and cute. As I grew I realized that dogs (and all animals) need a lot of caring. Just like we do. Even though animals aren’t us they don’t want to be stuck on a chain tied to a tree all their life. Think about them like you would think of family. Animals also need you in their worst of times. I’ve experienced that. Daisy once had heartworms. She was very skinny. We had to give her one shot at the end of one month, and a month later she had to get another one. A month after that she had her blood tested and was free of heartworms. When I turned 8 I realized how many cats and dogs were at the animal shelter. Lots of them were put to sleep. So for the birthday where I invite my friends, instead of presents I ask them to bring donations for the animal shelter. When we bring the donations to the animal shelter I go and say something to each one. I try to play with a...

Relationship Essay Greg and Rita

...school. My husband made sure my boys had a dog to grow up with, Foxy, who was never allowed in the house. According to Greg, dogs were meant to be outdoors. Greg thought having a dog would teach our boys responsibility. That being said, he was the one that would have to get out and clean up after her, take her out to the dog park to run and was constantly making sure she was feed and watered properly. When Foxy died, he said”no more dogs!” Well, one day a friend of mine, who had a cute little Chihuahua, was given another. They decided that their little dog Ruby did not want a companion, and asked me if I would like the most adorable short haired doe eyed, caramel colored, two pound female Chihuahua. I was absolutely thrilled! Just the thought of this precious sweet little girl coming to live with us gave me such joy! Think about this now, I live in a house full of men. You bet I jumped at the chance to have a charming little dog to dress up and be able to buy cute little dog dresses for. Yes, I could be one of those fancy little ladies that carry their dog around in a purse! When Greg came home and found me with my new found love, he said, “You need to march back over there and give that dog back. We don’t need anything that we have to take care of; you got enough to do now without having to worry about a dog!” He was not as thrilled at all. I told him he didn’t have to worry about a thing that she was going to be my dog. He firmly stated his dislike about me......

Adultery

...the law, in some cases the consequences of cheating can be seen to be positive giving it a sense of justification. The reasoning behind infidelity can give a person the idea that adultery can be justified. People may commit adultery for different reasons; they could be due to a loss of love or dullness in their marriage or to peruse personal happiness and or emotional fulfillment which expresses a person’s secret passionate desires in which the case can justify infidelity. Adultery is about a person that is acting out of discontentment with their failing marriage and is committed by people who lack the comfort of marital faithfulness and intimacy. Although cheating is wrong in most situations the story of Dmitry Gurov, in “The Lady with the Pet Dog” by Anton Chekhov, displays a male point of view of committing adultery offering a glimpse of why adulterers choose to be unfaithful. The loss of love between Gurov and his wife reveals the need to search for a further intimacy which he obtains during an affair. In Chekhov’s story Dmitry had become unfaithful to his wife a long time ago and had been unfaithful often “while he privately considered her of limited intelligence, narrow-minded, dowdy, was afraid of her, and did not like to be at home” (Chekhov 438) which is why Gurov runs away from his marriage. Adultery is a symptom of the bigger problem in marriage and in most cases the adulterer feels as...

Creating a Business

...Identify at least three challenges when setting up a business. Explain why they are challenges: Lack of Capital is probably the biggest challenge when starting a new business. Most small businesses are dependent on personal savings as they do not generally get funds from investors when starting up. And since most entrepreneurs are young and they do not have much funding to invest, their business will kick off much slower than an entrepreneur with age and savings. This lack of funds also limits business plans. Entrepreneurs will not be able to put together a substantial marketing plan or hire employees with a lack of capital, and without a marketing plan it will be extremely difficult and frustrating for the business to grow at the rate the entrepreneur might be expecting. Time management is another key challenge in starting a business. With everything and everyone depending on the entrepreneur, it is hard for most to distinguish between low-priority tasks and high-priority tasks. They can get caught up in advertising the business and forget about following up with customers or vice versa. Both ultimately being a high-priority task, but not having good time management skills, it’s hard to get customers without advertising and it is also hard to keep customers if you are not following up with them. Lack of experience in running a business is another challenge in starting a business. Most entrepreneurs have little to no experience in marketing, running a business,......

Pitt Bulls

...August 20, 2011 Pit Bulls: Mean or Misunderstood? By Andre Bourgeois Thesis: There is no other dog that conjures up fear and terror by the mere mention of their name as the pit bull. American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) aka Pit Bull brings fear to people because of the amount of human fatalities these dogs are supposedly involved in. The media would have you believe that these deaths are on the rise and is of epidemic proportions with the pit bull being the main perpetrator. An urban legend is that they have Locking jaws and have a super strength bite force. Another myth is that they are aggressive towards people, and go insane. Most people don’t realize is that the term “Pitt bull” is not a breed of dog; it is a group of a certain type of dog. The origin of this breed doesn’t help their reputation. The APBT was bred specifically for the purpose of being the ultimate fighting dog. The breed needed to be quick, agile, strong, determined, aggressive, and able to withstand pain and have a lot of game (to never give up under any situations). What is not known about the APBT is that they were bred NOT to be aggressive toward people. That was one trait that was bred into them, non aggressive towards people. The breeders needed that trait because when breaking up dog fights they didn’t want to get bit. When one dog would bite the handler, one of two things would happen; either that dog would get put down or didn’t get bred again. This was done to keep the bloodline pure.......

Endomethodolgy

...Katie Hulse Professor Nekervis Intro to Sociology 29 November 2014 Ethnomethodology Explanation & Prediction: “Ethnomethodology is the study of the ways in which people make sense of their social world. A favored technique among ethnomethodologists is to temporarily disrupt the world which people take for granted and see how they react. The point of this is to expose background assumptions that have been accepted as reality for a long time.” (Nekervis) For this project, I decided on performing an action that did just that. I have a pet pig. Even though the trend of having pet pigs is becoming popular, it is still not viewed as “normal,” especially around where I live in Brick town. I decided to take my pig, Phoebee, for a walk around the Brick township reservoir, which isn’t something you see everyday. There is a sign posted directly before the ramp to enter, which basically expresses that DOGS are welcome as long as they are cleaned up after. There are no signs discussing the rules regarding pigs obviously, but I didn’t think I would have a problem. I predicted I would receive a few strange looks and definitely some questions and some people, probably children that would like to interact with Phoebee. I thought that is wouldn’t be accepted completely but I felt like the people who witnessed me walking my pig would be open to the idea and it would get them thinking. Conclusion: I went to the reservoir with Phoebee on a sunny Wednesday when the......

Odyssey

...Rizal Technological University Boni Campus Boni Avenue, Mandaluyong City COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS BETWEEN ODYSSEY AND BIAG NI LAM ANG Presented by: Noveno, Sherjun C. Palon, John Paolo T. Presented to: Prof. Lynn M. Besa February 17, 2015 INTRODUCTION Skepticism is as much the result of knowledge, as knowledge is of skepticism. To be content with what we at present know is, for the most part, to shut our ears against conviction; since from the very gradual character of our education, we must continually forget and emancipate ourselves from, knowledge previously acquired; we must set aside old notions and embrace fresh ones; and as we learn, we must be daily unlearning something which it has cost us no small labor and anxiety to acquire. Skepticism has attained its culminating point with respect to Homer, and the state of our Homeric knowledge may be described as a free permission to believe any theory, provided we throw overboard all written tradition, concerning the author of the Iliad and Odyssey. Lots of arguments have appeared to run in a circle. “This cannot be true because it is not true; and that is not true, because it cannot be true.” Such seems to be the style, in which testimony upon testimony, statement upon statement, is consigned to denial and oblivion. Odyssey is one of the two major ancient Greek epic poems attributed to Homer. It is, in part, a sequel to the Iliad. The poem is fundamental to the modern Western canon and is the second......
