“You've captured our relationship exactly. Promise me it'll be on the cover.” former Beatles singer John Lennon told noted photographer Annie Leibowitz after a prompt shoot on an instant Polaroid camera. Lying in the light taupe floor rug, naked John Lennon curled around his wife Yoko Ono with his eyes closed and lips kissing her right-side cheek. He had his left arm and wrist bent around her, locking her slightly tiled head. His right arm stretched out to give a powerful grasp at her freely spread long black hair. He raised his lap against himself and right knee high up to her chest. He hooked her waist with his tensed foot while his left leg tucked under her buttocks. On his right, Yoko Ono dressed in black sweater and indigo jeans extended her torso straight with her right arm around John Lennon and left forearm under her head. Yoko Ono half-opened eyes stared into her distant left through John. They displayed their composure with their emotionless faces and intimate pose. Next to them was their white bed in which a piece of denim cloth was placed.
In his famous Dakota apartment in New York City, Annie Leibowitz took the last and arguably the single most controversial photograph of John Lennon. The striking elements of the image reveal not only his affection towards his wife but also his philosophies that brought him more publicity and criticism.
John Lennon had doubtlessly made a name for himself in the music industry as the founder member of Beatles even before embarking on his career as a solo artist. Nevertheless, like many musicians and celebrities, his artistic immortality was also largely complemented by his publicity outside the music arena. By promoting sexually provocative concepts in the given historical context, rejecting the taste of a large audiences, and declaring himself as passionate and forceful individual through his pose, the 1981 Rolling

Courtesans of the Renaissance

...Courtesans of the Renaissance Today, prostitution is thought of as anyone who sells their body for money. In fact, no specific distinction is put on class level of the prostitute or how much money they earn, they are still considered just a prostitute. However, this was not true of the 16th century. During this time, prostitution was a legal business, and at the top of the class list were the courtesans. The courtesans used their outstanding wit and intelligence, along with their bodies to earn their own living. They were visited by the men of the upper class, including royalty. Because of this the courtesans had to project an image of sophistication and nobility. They had to hold their own with their royal clients and were often admired and considered equals by these men. Unlike the imprisoned and sheltered noble women of the Renaissance (the clients wives and daughters), who were either in an arranged marriage or locked up in a convent, the courtesans were independent and free to do as they wished. Precursors to the modern women, the courtesans of 16th century were intelligent and well read, they earned their living by their beauty and wit, and were prostitutes by choice. To completely understand the life of the courtesans, one must realize why these women choose the life. In the Renaissance at this time, women had very few choices. The only good choices for girls were to become married (arranged in most cases) or enter into a convent, but later in the century, even these...

France Period

...HISTORY OF FRANCE • 13th century Spreading the weight of vaults over a series of ribs, columns, and pilasters, Gothic architecture allows the dissolution of the wall. Windows in cathedrals and churches are filled with stained glass; the shimmering colored light transfigures the vast interiors. Depicting biblical stories, scenes from the lives of the saints, or single figures, stained-glass windows complement the sculptures on the exterior and the rites and ceremonies observed within. • 1209 The Albigensian Crusade is launched by Pope Innocent III with the help of Cistercian monks. While the original spark for this war springs from papal desire to extinguish the growing problem of heresy in the region surrounding Toulouse, the political struggle between the independent southern territories and lords from northern France, joined after 1226 by Louis VIII, plays itself out in a war. In 1229, Count Raymond VII of Toulouse, who had been Louis VIII's main adversary, is compelled to cede territory to the king's control. • ca. 1210–1250 Artists at Chartres install an elaborate and extensive program of stained-glass windows in the cathedral under construction there. In addition to religious and historical subjects, the intensely colored windows depict numerous scenes of tradespeople at work, including bakers, furriers, wheelwrights, and weavers. These tradespeople were likely contributors—through hefty taxes—to the construction of the church. • 1226 Louis IX (d. 1270), grandson...

Essay on Media Psychology

...Copyright © 2005 Stuart Fischoff. All rights reserved. 1 Media Psychology: A Personal Essay in Definition and Purview by Stuart Fischoff, Ph.D. Introduction The subject matter of media psychology is a mother lode of material that psychology has actively mined for decades, but only within the last ten to fifteen years has the enterprise emerged as a distinct and explicit subdivision of psychology. Media psychology found its inspirational roots more than 90 years ago within the discipline of social psychology and in the early work of social psychologist Hugo Münsterberg concerning the psychology and the psychological impact of film. Published in 1916 under the title, The Photoplay: A Psychological Study, it was the first empirical study of an audience reacting to a film. Münsterberg also provided such a keen analysis of a screenplay's (then called a photoplay) grammar of visual construction and nascent cinematic conventions and their psychological impact on the audience, that his incisive words still echo today in numerous film school lecture halls and classroom seminars. And there was psychologist L.L. Thurstone, arguably the Father of Attitude Scale Construction and Measurement (a signature area of theory and research in social psychology), who developed scales for the measurement of attitudes toward movies for the famous and notoriously politicized Payne Fund Research in 1928. This study’s practically avowed purpose was to indict (not investigate) the medium of film...
