...When I was asked to write this, I was a bit overwhelmed because as I started reflecting on my life. And I was even more overwhelmed when I realized that, in the perspective of a full life. Nevertheless, I’ve adopted a few simple philosophies that have helped me get through life. Trust your instincts: Your instincts are there for a reason. So LISTEN TO YOURSELF!!! Recognize that feeling in your gut when something is off. Or let your instincts lead you to the right decision in an extremely difficult situation. It’s not always easy to trust them, and I’ve always found that, for some reason, the voice in your head called “logic” will try to hush those instincts. Logic will talk you into playing it safe and may rob you of opportunities. If I had listened to myself saying I lacked experience required to tackle the leadership positions. I would have lost the chance to positively impact myself and others, and I’d be a very different person right now. I’m not suggesting you dismiss your brain altogether. Just consider going with your instincts first, then incorporate logic second. “But what if my instincts are wrong?” Well, they will be sometimes, but you must possess the belief in yourself to allow those instincts to shine through and the confidence to act upon them. ...all have regrets in life. There are things we wish we hadn’t done, and other things we wish we would have accomplished. How many of us wished they haven’t done something, or wish they’ve had done it differently. Regrets are a part of being a human being. We all do things we regret at some point. We are never satisfied with what we have, we always want more, then comes regrets. We regret not spending time with our loved ones, we also regret spending time focusing on silly things. If I knew that today was my last day on earth, what are the things I would want to change? That’s the question I would have asked myself. There is nothing I would regret more than nothing living my life the way I want to live it, or to live a life full of regrets and unanswered questions. ...many years to live, and many experiences to have, I feel a bit immature declaring a definite faith or spirituality because there is so much more in the world that I have yet to learn or see and I feel by allowing myself to label as something could prevent me from experiencing other things. I will not attempt to respond to all of them, but instead focus on one of the stronger arguments, which deals with life trajectories. I will begin by briefly presenting the theory of axiological hedonism and then present the objection regarding life trajectories to the best of my ability. Finally for the majority of my essay, I will argue for why this objection is unsound and does not prove that hedonism is false. Axiological hedonism is the philosophical theory that is based on the idea that the only thing in this world that is intrinsically good for its own sake is happiness. This is different from the theory of psychological hedonism, which says that the only thing humans are physically able to desire for its own sake is happiness. First developed by Epicurus and later revised by John Stuart Mill along with many others, the theory of axiological hedonism uses a distinction between what philosophers call instrumental goods and things that are intrinsically valuable to illustrate its claim. ...Sound Tracks to My Life I wonder if there is such a thing as a good addiction, because I’m sure as hell addicted to music. When I think of music I think of an escape. I can be doing anything at any given moment and put in a pair of head phones and be completely in another world. Without music, my day is completely empty and boring. I wake up to music; I go to school listening to music and even eat to it. Music is a source of joy, stress, tears, camaraderie and fulfillment for me. What would life be without music? The world would be a very quiet place. Music for me is a reminder of how things once were an indication of how things are, and a view of where society is headed. Since our ability to think and reason makes us who we are as individuals, it is odd that Dillard marvels at the value of “mindlessness.” Yet, in Anne Dillard’s essay, “Living like Weasels” she uses her encounter with a weasel to demonstrate how we would obtain more out of life through living carefree and without a worry.
