“Dear beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul:” 1 Peter 2:11
I Introduction
As Christians, we must overcome and abstain from fleshly lusts. It was the disobedient lust that caused Adam and Eve to sin against God causing the fall of mankind. Listed in this reflection are some Old and New Testament scriptures that can help us as Christians to believe that we can abstain from “THE LUST OF THE FLESH AND THE EYES.” The principles I have learned in this course have stirred and rejuvenated the teaching within me which was taught all of my life. It has given me a deeper understanding of the foundation of what Christ did to show His love for us from birth to death. Reading in the book from Paxis (chapter 16- 25) on “Jesus Christ” has been like a fresh new revival to the soul assuring us that God is still alive and that Jesus paid the ultimate price to redeem man back to God. It is “The unique revelation of Jesus Christ” as stated in the excerpt from (V. Arguments That the Bible is The Word of God” (Towns). I have been deeply uplifted after hearing the video tapes and seeing Dr. Elmer Towns include his personal testimonies of how he was converted by the Holy Spirit to a new life in Christ in the early 60’s. The anointed excitement heard in his conversations about the Bible, that is read in Praxis and Core Christianity books has made me eager to learn more. Since that one day in the Garden of Eden the enemy has continued his sinful tricks working through sinful lustful tricks. He succeeded in the Garden of Eden in Genesis 3:6 where man fell. He tried again on the Mount of temptation Matthew 4:8-9 where Jesus was tempted but he met the holiest of holy who could resist him. Today that same evil force desires to sift us as it has tried to test many of God’s servants as described in Luke

Pornography

...become an object of worship, a god in our society. In his book Sexual Healing: a Biblical Guide to Finding Freedom from Sexual Sin and Brokenness, David Kyle Foster is right when he says, “One of the greatest problems that we have in dealing with pornography is that we do not recognize that it is evil. We minimize, rationalize, and deny the truth behind it. We do not repent for being idol worshipers and grieving the heart of our God” (205). Pornography not only destroys the man but it is ruining marriages, families, and even churches. It has created such a stronghold on men within the body of Christ that many have become neutralized from being any kind of force for the kingdom of God. Ephesians 6: 12 says, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places” (NASU). Pornography and sexual immorality are from the supreme ruler of darkness. It is one more device to draw men away from serving God. Pornography is not just a secular problem. It has infiltrated the church also. Unfortunate as it may be, Christian minister’s exposure for their involvement in pornography has resulted in severe consequences and has dealt a devastating blow to the witness of the church. The secret lifestyle it creates prevents men from fulfilling their full purpose for God and can only be exposed by the light of...

The Colossians Chapter 3 Summary

...to forget about earthly desires that contaminate our Spirit. Jewish and Christians are concerned about sexual immorality, impurity, lust, greed, and idolatry. Due to these sinful we God’s wrath is coming. Paul understands that people used to live a more sinful life, but it is time to put all of those lustful desires away since our bodies will be renewed. This is for Jews and Gentiles, whether if the person is circumcised or uncircumcised; God will accept the individual as long as they are living a better life and put away their earthly desires. Those that appeal to the lust of the flesh often times comment fornication (porneia), uncleanness, and evil desires such as: desires, craving, longing, desire for what is forbidden, and lust. We must also put away the...

Theology of the Body

...Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body A Cliff Notes’ Version Introduction A. The Theology of the Body is the term used to describe the teaching of Pope John Paul about the human person and human sexuality given during his Wednesday Catecheses in St. Peter’s Square between September 5, 1979 and November 28, 1984. John Paul II says that these catecheses could be called “Human Love in the Divine Plan” or “The Redemption of the Body and the Sacramentality of Marriage.” B. Various scholars, in different language groupings, will generally break the theology of the body found in these 129 catecheses down into four main sections, others six. I think the most logical way to do so is to break it down into seven interrelated sections: 1) The Original Unity of Man and Woman as found in the Book of Genesis • 23 catecheses from September 5, 1979-April 9, 1980 2) Purity of Heart versus Concupiscence: Catechesis on the Sermon on the Mount • 27 catecheses from April 16 to December 10, 1980 3) St. Paul’s Teaching on the Human Body: Life according to the Spirit • 13 catechesis from December 17, 1980 to May 6, 1981 4) Marriage and celibacy in light of the resurrection of the body • 9 catechesis from November 11, 1981 to February 10, 1982 5) Virginity or celibacy for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven • 14 catecheses from March 10, 1982 to July 21, 1982 6) The sacramentality of marriage based on Ephesians 5:22-33 • 27 catecheses from July 28, 1982 to July 4, 1984 7) Reflections...

Temptations In Genesis 1-17

...A temptation is basically trying to get you to do something you know is wrong or that you should not do. Temptations are found in many passages throughout the Bible. Both in the Old and New Testaments. For Example, In Genesis 3:6 even though she knew it was wrong, Eve saw that the particular fruit was good and pleasing to the eye and so she ate it and gave some to Adam as well. That is a perfect example of giving in to temptation. 1 John 2:16 says this," For everything in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, comes not from the Father but from the world." This scripture does relate to Genesis 3. First The serpent deceived Eve into eating the fruit from the tree she knew she should not have eaten from,...

Love vs Lust

...Love vs. Lust Although love is the most common term for a person to express his/her attraction to someone, but love can be just a layer covering lust underneath, which creates a mixed feeling that could lead to unwanted situation. Love is a strong feeling of affection for another person. In Martin Luther Kings’s Pilgrimage to Nonviolence he indicated to different kinds of love; it can be eros, philia and agape love. Philia love is the kind of love that is purely of any romantic or sexual feelings. This is the kind of feelings that we have towards our neighbors, friends, and the people around us whom we are fond of. Eros love is known as romantic love. Agape love is the unconditional love or disinterested love for example the kind of love that God have towards us or love we have for our community and we do not wait for anything back. In contrary, lust is the urge or passionate to want to have someone mostly for sexual satisfaction. This kind of feeling is usually evident between individuals of the opposite gender. For lust to exist, love need not be present. Actually, lust can be termed as the opposite of love and it focuses more on the physical aspects. Lust is not necessarily in the term of sexual feelings but also it is the urge to want to posses’ items like clothes for the purpose of lavishing it. It is possible for someone to have a mix feeling between love and lust. In love, people desire the best for those people they love and they would do anything to make them happy...

Elijah As A Hero In Joseph Boyden's Three Day Road

...Throughout history, every single hero, or leader possessed the same defining quality that proves their worth. They were powerful in many areas of their life. These people had the confidence and power within themselves. They were above and well respected by others. These people were able to control their emotions in the face of adversity. To be a true leader, one needs the perfect amount of power. The lack of power opens the possibility of weakness while an abundance of power will overcome one’s self. In Joseph Boyden’s “Three Day Road”, Elijah is a powerful character who only wants to be a hero in the eyes of other people. Elijah’s lust for control shows that overwhelming power inevitably corrupts people. Elijah’s lack of fear and self-confident...

Biblical Worldview

...concerning the natural world. God spoke creation into existence (Genesis 1) and by doing so He made Himself known through His eternal power and divine nature, so that no man is without an excuse (Romans 1:19-20). The first created being was Adam and through his disobedience came sin and through sin came death (Romans 5:12). Because of man’s sin, all of humanity is born into sin and therefore “none is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” (Romans 3:11-12). Although God has made Himself known in and through His creation, humanity chose to not honor Him or give him thanks and their hearts were darkened. God gave them over to their lusts “Because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the creator” (Romans 1:25). The natural world is a depraved world “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23) and because of that “the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of man, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth” (Romans 1:18). Human Identity is found in knowing our human nature and knowing Christ. Because sin and death entered the world through Adam, all are born...

Biblical Worldview

...Biblical Worldview Benjamin M. Phelps Liberty University Abstract My essay will explain the Biblical Christian worldview, as it is presented in the book of Genesis chapters one through eleven. A biblical worldview is based on the infallible Word of God. I will discuss what the Word of God teaches us about the natural world, human identity, human relationships, and civilization. It will answer some of life’s difficult questions: “Where did we come from? How did we get here? What is my purpose here? Who am I? Is there a God?” All of these will be answered with the Old Testament, which is where I derive my worldview from. Biblical Worldview Our worldview is the foundation for our values, morals, family structure, and life purpose. Worldview is defined by Merriam-Webster (2016) as “a particular philosophy of life or conception of the world.” Israel Wayne presents it as “a set of lenses which taint our vision or alter the way we perceive the world around us. Our worldview is formed by our education, our upbringing, the culture we live in, the books we read, the media and movies we absorb” (Wayne, 2016). I have a Biblical Christian worldview, which is based in The Bible’s book of Genesis. Let’s explore the book of Genesis, and find out what that means. You do not have to go far into The Bible to find where the Christians fundamental understanding of the natural world comes from. The book of Genesis chapter one, verse one, reads “In the beginning God created the...

Sinful Salacity

...actions. It can cloud our judgment and reduce us to a state of primal licentiousness. This insatiable desire for material and corporeal consumption is known as lust. The Oxford English Dictionary itself takes several stances on the meaning of the word. The first definition is simple: “Pleasure, delight” (OED 1). This definition doesn’t accentuate the sinful connotation of the word. It describes something charming, attractive, and friendly. The next definition that the OED gives is “desire, appetite, relish, or inclination for something” (OED 2). With this definition, we are able to detect more of a connotation of a strong ache for something that, when attained, brings about a sort of ecstasy only caused by that object of lust. A more recent definition, “Sexual appetite or desire. Chiefly and now exclusively implying intense moral reprobation: Libidinous desire, degrading animal passion” (OED 4), finally associates lust with reprehensibility. It denotes specifically the sinful nature of such passion associated with the flesh, and indicates how lending ourselves to such desires debases our humanity. While a dictionary is widely considered to be a purely un-biased source, the OED reflects bias in the order it has listed the variations of this definition. The editors of the OED show that they don’t consider the sinfulness of lust to be the most important part of the definition by listing this variation after two that do not have a negative connotation. Marketers, both seasoned veterans...

...How & Why We Fast An explanation of why we fast at certain times of the year, and with certain foods.   The most important aspect of fasting is a spiritual one. We grow spiritually and get closer to God through fasting and prayer. We read in the Gospels, "However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting" (Matthew 17:21, Mark 9:29). Fasting weakens the body and elevates the soul. It is a battle against the flesh. A weakened body is less susceptible to sin and more susceptible to an awakened soul. "My knees are weak through fasting, And my flesh is feeble from lack of fatness" (Psalm 109:24). Fasting is the first response to the act of being filled with the Holy Spirit. Fasting on the Mount was the first act of Christ to begin His ministry. Fasting removes the "lust of the flesh", "the lust of the eyes", and "the pride of life" (1 John 2:16). God ordered him not to eat from just one specific tree. This was not to deprive man, or to impose His authority, but rather to make man worthy of His love through fasting and obeying His commandment; "man does not live by bread only, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord..." Deut. 8:3, Matt. 4:4. The Lord, Himself fasted before undergoing trial and undertaking- 40 days (transfiguration). In this way He declared that fasting is not deprivation, neither is it a restraint upon the body; but it is rather a sublimation with our Lord on Mount Tabor which enables us to enjoy His Glory made...

Sin That Destroys Us All

...Kyle Jordan Estanislao TREDTWO C37 2/17/2015 The Clutches of Sin Sin as we all know is formally defined as the infraction against the word of God. With every sinful act we commit, it is like we are distancing ourselves from God. Despite this, it seems that nobody could still stay away from the clutches of sin. Nobody is perfect. We live in an imperfect world filled with temptations and bad influences. Unfortunately no matter how hard we try to stay away and fight off these negative inducements, eventually we would succumb to the pull of sin. As my father always quotes from the bible “The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. Due to this, people have this common notion in mind that if everybody eventually turns out to be a sinner, then why bother trying so hard not to be one. These people would then rationalize that it is ok to sin because God is super forgiving and that by confessing our sins, everything would be ok. It is as if by simply telling someone of one’s bad deeds, it would magically erase all the damages done because of one’s sinful acts. What they don’t realize is that as described in the lecture, sin is a spiral that enslaves us, making us addicted to it. Every time we commit a sin, it opens us to a possibility that we would keep repeating them until it now harms our major social and personal relations. Sin doesn’t just affect oneself, it also affects the people around us. Every time we commit a sin, more likely than not, someone would be negatively...

Marriage Divorce

...want needs healing. In today’s society too often, marriage is entered into with the idea of, “If this doesn’t work we can always get a divorce.” That way of thinking should be the first clue that you are not mature enough to be getting married, let alone it is not a loving thought for the other person. It is self-centered thinking. According to the Evangelical Dictionary of Theology, “Biblical teaching on marriage is epitomized in the statement,’ For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh’”(Gen.2:24).(Elwell 2001) Marriage is an exclusive relationship between one man and one woman. It is a “one flesh” unity emotionall, intellectually, physically and above all, it is a spiritual union of two becoming one. This implies that the two entering into this covenant with one another have matured in understanding of the term “one flesh”. It is important to note that the union is between one man and one woman, which restricts and...
