The production of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) began in 1975. But the first rail service began on June 30, 1979. Today, for a person who is travelling by a train for the first time, MARTA may seem like a very unpleasant and smelly place. However, MARTA is more than just a smelly place; it’s a transit system that provides economic benefits to every corner of the state. Although some may be hesitant to use MARTA, this mode of transportation lessens traffic and pollution, creates jobs, and makes travelling to and from work more enjoyable.
On Wednesday, October 14th, 2015, while travelling from Five Points to Doraville, I decided to observe the train and think about why people travel on the train. The first thing I …show more content…
I saw a blue, yellow, and orange line and started thinking why those particular colors were chosen. For me, blue symbolizes unity (American flag), yellow symbolizes confidence/positivity (sunlight), and orange symbolizes productivity (crops). Maybe these colors were chosen to have a positive and a welcoming feeling for anyone who rides the train. People like me travel on the MARTA because it is a great mode of transportation; it’s cheap, easy, and fast. With the growing fuel prices, it is difficult to tell when it will ever stop. One also does not have to be burdened with where to park, especially for people who are traveling towards downtown. While travelling on the train, I can see how people are struggling through traffic to get to work or school. I also know some friends who drive to school each day, and due to the traffic, they sometimes come to class late. MARTA is very dependable because it has fixed routes, fixed schedules, and it’s less affected by weather conditions such as rain or fog or any kind of accident. While …show more content…
Some basic jobs that MARTA offers are: rail operator, MARTA Police, bus/train operator, cleaning department, etc. Personally, I have seen the MARTA Police at each station helping any passengers who may need assistance. I have also seen the cleaning department come to pick up trash on the train and have even seen the train operator come to check and ensure that the train is functioning properly. MARTA also helps the economy by advertising a large amount of companies and services through transit ads. These companies and services advertise at places where they can reach a broad section of the population, and MARTA is a great place to advertise because thousands of people ride the MARTA each day, not to mention passengers who own a MARTA breeze card can also get discounts at certain stores. MARTA also advertises universities and hospitals such as GSU, Herzing University, Emory University, Georgia Tech, and Grady

Public Transportation

...of a two-income family. That’s why I feel that by offering free public transportation can be a major key step in reducing the unemployment rates. Supporting Arguments Individuals who can’t afford private transportation often live in neighborhoods that don’t have many businesses, and thus, there are not many jobs within walking distance. By increasing the local customer base for services, such as medical facilities, shopping malls, and local educational facilities, rural transportation can enhance economic growth. Second, public transit can improve economic efficiency. “For example, when a transit system allows an unemployed individual to find and keep a job, this can save the Federal Government and the States significant costs by reducing payments for such programs as unemployment compensation, Food Stamps, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), and/or Medicaid. And, when an elderly rural resident who is unable to drive uses transit to obtain health services, this promotes preventive health care for rural...
