Rhetoric Analysis: Millennials: The Me Me Me Generation by Joel Stein
Introduction
The millennial generation are an interesting group of social class that are going to change the world from their own point of view regardless of how the older generations view or relate to them. The article Millennials: The Me Me Me Generation is talking about the Millennials and how the society perceives them. The millennial is a group of the social generation that were born between the years 1980s to the beginning of the millennium in 2000. These individuals are also referred to as Generation Y, as the previous was known as generation X. The group is made up of mostly teenagers and adults still in their 20s as the author puts it. They make up about 80 million of the American population making them the biggest age group in the history of the United States. Analysing the rhetorical and Aristotelian elements of the essay, particularly the ethos, the pathos, and the logos as the writer applied them throughout the essay, goes on to prove the change the millennial represent
Ethos
Stain, the author expresses Ethos in the article as an appeal to the ethical side of the audience. The element seeks to convince, inform or entertain the audience about some of the subjects and objectives of the essay through the character and the credibility of the persuader (Banev, 104-107). Stein appeal to ethos may be a part where the writer tries to pass the point across based on his or her credibility, this may not be necessarily the chief author of the article but another second or third subject might be introduced. The author of the article Millennials: The Me Me Me Generation has not fallen short of the skill as it is observed in the read. The introductory paragraph has some elements that try to emphasize on the credibility of the author as the means of providing...

Employee Engagement

...has an enormous amount of currency in the business world today; for many the pursuit of ‘engaged’ staff is seen as an end in itself. But there are a broad range of definitions and interpretations of employee engagement in the literature: some are heavy with psychological theory while others link employee views and organisational strategy. However, there are common themes: for example, engagement is seen as a two-way interaction between the employee and their workplace, engagement is believed to lead to positive organisational outcomes, and finally, it is considered to be measurable through an employee survey. These themes are consistent across a literature that ranges from pamphlets produced by management consultants through to refereed articles in scholarly journals. However,...

Generational Differences in the Workplace

...Ambition, Altruism, Affiliation and Anxiety in the workplace: A review of generational differences in work attitudes. Madeleine Fogarty Melbourne University Abstract Popular books and articles claim that there are significant differences between the generations in attitudes to work. However, there are relatively few empirical studies that support this claim. This review examines the reasons for the dearth of empirical work, reports on the US and Australasian findings published in the past decade, and suggests a taxonomy of ambition, altruism, affiliation and anxiety to synthesise the diversity of previous research and reach a coherent conclusion: all are on the rise for Gen Y. Directions for future research and recommendations for organisations are discussed. News articles regularly demand that we pay attention to the different needs of the next generation and their attitudes towards work. Last week the Sydney Morning Herald claimed that “Generation Y . . . has high expectations of their employers, seek out new challenges, are not afraid to question authority, value teamwork, seek the affirmation of others, crave attention and want to be included and involved” (Zavos, 2010). Other stereotypes of Gen Y, including Myers & Sadaghiani (2010), pitch them as self-centred, unmotivated, disrespectful and disloyal. There have been many articles and books in “popular literature” that describe differences between the generations, including Strauss & Howe (1991),...

Managing Gen Y

...must learn how to manage Generation Y workers and cater to their needs if they want to retain Gen Y works. "Generation Y'ers are like X'ers on steroids. They are the most high-maintenance generation to ever enter the work force" (Breaux 2009,p95). As Gen Y has already started to enter the work force companies cannot afford to ignore the wants and need of Gen Y. Gen Y is just as big in numbers and will keep entering into the workforce at a rapid rate. The companies that don’t figure out how to attract and retain the growing Gen Y workers are likely to find themselves at a distinct disadvantage. After all, Generation Y is the next generation of workers who will ultimately be managing companies and determine if businesses succeed or fail. Article one “Understanding and managing generation differences in the workplace” Database: Emerald Group Publishing Limited Journal: Worldwide Hospitality and Tourism Themes, 2011, Vol.3(4), p.308-318 [Peer Reviewed Journal] Written by: Camille Kapoor Abstract: “ The modern workplace now consists of four different generations for the first time in history. Social Networking and Education: Emerging Research Within Cscl

...practices in which participants naturally engage and how these relate to the competencies increasingly valued in formal education. Next, I discuss one research projects which I am currently pursuing that build on early work and suggest how educational programs might employ such practices to advantage. Finally, I discuss what I see as the educative value of this technology in certain contexts and suggest a course for future research and development. My overall goals are to inform other researchers interested in pursuing similar projects and to stimulate interdisciplinary conversation about where such agendas fit within and advance the aims of CSCL. Social Networking Systems: The Next Wave of CSCL? Recent conference symposia, papers and journal articles within the CSCL community have demonstrated keen interest in learning from students’ everyday out-of-school socio-technical practices about how to better develop future technology-powered contexts for learning (Barron, 2006; Fields & Kafai, 2007; Forte & Bruckman, 2008; Gardner & Kolodner, 2007; Halverson, 2007; Miyake et al., 2007; Peppler & Kafai, 2007; Steinkuehler, 2007; Yardi & Perkel, 2007). One example of this include Steinkuehler’s research on online game-playing “in the wild,” a goal of which is to inform the design of intentioned learning environments in school and after-school contexts. Similarly, Forte and Bruckman (2008) examined authorship and editorial processes in...

Luxury Car Retailing and Trends

...Luxury Car Retailing & Trends Executive Summary A luxury car is indeed a status symbol that is a reflection of one’s personality and power in society. There is a steady increase in luxury car customers globally as there is a rise in income, wealth and urbanization. It is more of a dream come true of the rising middle class to purchase and own a luxury car. After the global financial crisis (Reyneke et al., 2012) hit the luxury auto market, it was interesting to find that the younger generation maintained their spending habits and joined the baby boomers who were already major consumers of luxury cars. However, the concept of cars being a boy toy has certainly evolved with the emergence of female consumers . These women are driven by their need to showcase their power and independence. The finest example are the Chinese and Middle Eastern women who have come out of their cocoons and protested against a male dominated culture and purchasing luxury cars were a part of that change. As the younger generation have become more environmentally conscious, luxury car retailers have adopted the ‘go green’ concept by bringing out diesel run and electric cars. Another trend that is picking up is the customization of cars. Luxury car retailers have chosen to customize their car for their customers providing them exclusivity and satisfaction as the customers get what they exactly want. The sales for luxury cars from 2012 to 2014 have been forecasted to increase steadily but there......

Email: sue_bennett@uow.edu.au Abstract The idea that a new generation of students is entering the education system has excited recent attention among educators and education commentators. Termed ‘digital natives’ or the ‘Net generation’, these young people are said to have been immersed in technology all their lives, imbuing them with sophisticated technical skills and learning preferences for which traditional education is unprepared. Grand claims are being made about the nature of this generational change and about the urgent necessity for educational reform in response. A sense of impending crisis pervades this debate. However, the actual situation is far from clear. In this paper, the authors draw on the fields of education and sociology to analyse the digital natives debate. The paper presents and questions the main claims made about digital natives and analyses the nature of the debate......
