For the most part, I disagree with McLuhan’s message of “the medium is the message”. If I understand correctly, McLuhan is trying to say that the medium in which information is presented, is more important than the information itself. While I agree that the medium is extremely important, I don’t necessarily believe it to be more important than the actual information. Although the medium can be highly influential as it is the first thing you are likely notice, I believe most people will be able to get past that and see what truly is being communicated to them. However I feel that good use of the medium will definitely enhance the message. I also think that McLuhan says that the media has had a large effect on society and that I agree with. I also understood and agree with the whole section about professionals and amateurs, how being an amateur can have an advantage because you are able to think outside the box and therefore are more likely to discover something new. I have found that a lot of things McLuhan says in his book are very hard to understand. I wouldn’t say the ideas so much are difficult but mostly the way in which he explains it, specifically his choice of words or sentence structure. I think McLuhan could have definitely gotten his message across easier with a more friendly writing style. To be honest, reading this has been a frustrating experience for me. Although it may have been obvious, I am not entirely sure his stance on technology or media itself. Is it something he likes or dislikes? It is probably explained in the text but I was unsure. Another issue I had was that I could not distinguish a clear structure in the book; it sometimes felt to me that the topics came in random order. I wish I had more specific things to ask the author but I think that is a testament to how little I was able to pull from the readings.

Cam Therapeutic Modalities Paper

...CAM Therapeutic Modalities Paper In today's world, there are many treatment methods for the different ailments people encounter. Although traditional medical practices are the predominant choice among Americans, many also use complimentary or alternative medicine (CAM) to treat certain conditions. According to NCCAM Clearinghouse (n.d.), CAM is defined as "a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not generally considered part of conventional medicine" (Defining CAM). In this paper alternative, complementary and integrative medicine will be defined and differentiated, and the role of conventional medicine in these medicines will be discussed. There will also be a comparison of the regulations and oversights in conventional and non-conventional medicine in the United States, a review of the CAM philosophy, and a description of the domains of therapies according to the NCCAM website. Finally, a CAM treatment modality within one of the domains will be described and evaluated. Alternative medicine is the use of CAM as a replacement for conventional medicine such as faith healing ("alternative medicine," 2014). Conventional medicine does not play a role in alternative medicine because the conventional methods are discarded for the alternative methods. "An example of an alternative therapy is using a special diet to treat cancer instead of undergoing surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy that has been recommended by a conventional doctor"...

5 Year Plan

...because there are a ton of possibilities. I could just get a simple job, work from home, go to client’s houses, and go back to school. In 5 years I see myself doing all of those things but ultimately starting my own business in massage therapy. After I complete the program I want to look for employment as soon as possible. Of course to make ends meat for home, but mostly to gain even more experience in my profession. Only thru hands on experiences from different people will I truly get the feel for what im doing. I wouldn’t mind giving special massages to pregnant women, who i know deal with a lot of uncomfortable and painful situations due to the baby growing and making constant changes to their body. Knowing I can ease some of the tension they are feeling would be a good feeling for me and I’m pretty sure they would appreciate it as well. Having a baby is a big responsibility and if I could make that experience less painful and or help with a medical situation I would consider that a big step forward in my goal. Also helping military is another job I would look for in my massage therapy profession. These people lay there life on the line for our country and some go overseas and come back sore, drained and some injured. I would love to help ease there mind if possible any wounds and muscle injuries they pertained while in service I would want to help ease as well. Basically when it comes to my work I want to know I’m truly making an impact on someone’s life while doing what I...

Validity of Sports Massage

...The Validity of Sports Massage Treatments with Regards To Current Practices Therapeutic sports massage in the context of sports specific injuries and rehabilitation, has been said to not only improve the physical attributes of certain structures and muscles within the human body, but to also have a strong psychological effect for an individual helping them overcome injury or increasing their injury prevention rate while helping to optimise performance (Galloway, 2004). In light of this it can be assumed that every person irrespective of whether they play sport or not, would benefit highly from some form of massage therapy (Alvarado, 2002). To assess whether or not sports massage is an effective method of treatment or is in actual fact just a psychological treatment that has no real impact on the body, it is necessary to observe and evaluate the conducted research of current practitioners and other researchers that provide valid arguments to either strengthen or weaken the claim for more massage to be performed. The proposed benefits and hindrances will need to be highlighted within recent literature alongside the credibility of the sources that the research is derived from, as only if a source is deemed to be reliable can the research be seen as potential evidence to back up discussed points and reasoning. This review of literature will also set out to identify any potential future research points that could be taken to highlight and eradicate...

...Acupuncture Acupuncture is a treatment derived from ancient Chinese medicine in which fine needles are inserted at certain points in the body for therapeutic or preventative purposes. It is often seen as a form of complementary or alternative medicine, although it is used in many general practises as well as the majority of pain clinics and hospices in the UK. Western medicine is the use of acupuncture after a proper diagnosis. It is based on scientific evidence that show the treatment can stimulate nerves under the skin and in muscle tissue. This results in the body producing pain and relieving substances such as endorphins. Acupuncture practitioners sometimes called acupuncturists use acupuncture to treat a wide range of health conditions such as headaches, lower back pain but sometimes used in an attempt to help people with conditions such as anxiety to asthma. The national institute for health and care excellence only recommends considering acupuncture as a treatment option for chronic lower back pain, chronic tension type headaches and migraines. When it is carried out by a qualified practitioner. Acupuncture is generally very safe and some people may experience some side effects such has feeling drowsy or dizzy but these are usually mild and short lived. Acupuncture is available on the NHS most often from GP’s or physiotherapist although access is limited. Most acupuncture patients pay for private treatment. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Communication from Loyola University in Chicago in 1994. While I was personally proud of that accomplishment, I was left feeling a void in my ability to enhance the lives of others the way I envisioned it. Of course, feeling "stuck" in sales and administrative jobs didn't help. I longed for a career in which I could impact others while helping them towards feeling better. Alternative Medicine

...medicine to maintain their health. More physicians are accepting alternative medicines as a more holistic way to treat their patients. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) has classified alternative medicines into five main categories: Whole medical systems, Mind-body medicine, Biologically based practices, Manipulative and body-based practices, and Energy medicine. The following paragraphs will briefly discuss each of these categories; and some of the common treatments utilized today. Whole medical systems are many practices that center on a philosophy, such as the power of nature or the presence of energy in your body. Examples include ancient healing systems that have origins from ayurveda from India and traditional Chinese medicine. There are two subcategories within the whole medical system; homeopathy and Naturopathy. Homeopathy uses minute doses of a substance that causes symptoms to stimulate the body’s self-healing response, and Naturopathy focuses on the use of noninvasive treatments to help your body heal through using massage, acupuncture, herbal remedies exercise, and lifestyle counseling. According to the 2007 NHIS, several mind and body practices ranked among the...

Btec Level 3 Health and Social Care Complimentary Therapies 23a

...Explain the factors that affect access to complementary therapies Factors that could affect access to complementary therapies could stem from many sources. These could consist of physical barriers, geographical barriers, socio-economical barriers, cultural barriers, educational barriers and the barriers that may be face by referral systems. Physical Barriers includes whether or not a service user can access the building in which the CAM therapy is to take place. For example the individual may face mobility issues such as being in a wheelchair, or other health problems such as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) which may result in breathlessness. Geographical barriers would include aspects of an individual’s life associated with where they live which may determine how easy it is to get to and from places in which complementary therapies take place. Various transport options may have to be considered, does the individual drive, or is there reliable access to public transport? Socio-economical barriers arise in association with how financially secure potential service users are. Whether or not an individual can attend a complementary therapy service is dependent on how much the therapy costs, and whether it can be afforded by the individual. Cultural barriers stem from the beliefs of an individual, and whether a particular type of practice is acceptable in relation to their religion or culture, but may also be a result of perceived efficacy of the therapies...

...CHAPTER I: HISTORY OF SPA Getting enough sleep after a tiring day is sometimes not enough to give glow and fullness to your physical well-being. If you are the workaholic type of person, then take this as an advice – you need more than sleep and right diet. Undergoing a spa treatment at least once a week can give you a relaxed feeling and it can also give you mental comfort. But what is a spa anyway? Spa is a treatment that’s more close to a water treatment or balneotherapy (bath treatment). If you will notice, most of spa houses and resorts also offer health remedies and treatments. There are also various types of spa, depending on the health benefits it gives. Here are some of the known spas: Ayurvedic spa, Club spa, Cruise Ship spa, Day spa, Dental spa, Garden spa, and Medical spa and Mineral Springs spa. The use of spa treatment dates back in the pre historic -times, when people had to travel in hot or cold springs, hoping to be cured on certain ailments. Romans, Native Americans, Egyptians, Persians and Babylonians even believe that spa is one way to one’s physical and spiritual sanctification.
