“If Iona's heart were to burst and his misery to flow out, it would flood the whole world, it seems, but yet it is not seen. It has found a hiding-place in such an insignificant shell that one would not have found it with a candle by daylight....”. “Misery” is a short story about a man named Iona who is in mourning over his dead son. Throughout the story, this sledge driver tries over and over to talk to someone about his son’s death. Iona’s son tragically died a week ago and still has not told any one. Finally, at the end Iona finds comfort when he talks to his horse, which is the only one wanting to listen. “Misery” reflects the harshness of human behavior and the lack of connection and compassion towards others.
It is believed that when emotions are expressed we share our pain and when we do so we relieve ourselves of carrying the entire load of agony all by ourselves. Iona well realizes this. Only if he could actually do so. There seems to be no one who would share his anguish.
Within the story, Iona tries to talk to people three times about the death of his son. The first time, Iona attempts to talk with an officer. He tells the officer, “"My son... er... my son died this week, sir”. This is also the first time the readers learn why he is so unhappy
Then when In his next fare, Iona drives three young men; two tall and thin and one hunchback. Iona drives them for less of what the three men should be paying him. But Iona seems to be mentally unstable to recognize what is going on in the world around him. As they set off the hunchback insults Iona by making fun of his hat and how slow of a driver he is. Instead of fighting back or showing Iona tells them about his dead son, the hunchback says, “"We shall all die” . Again, Iona get no sympathy at all. When Iona goes back to his stable, he tries a third time to tell someone about the death of his son, but the cabdriver soon fell asleep.

Iona, the protagonist in the story can't find humanity in people around him , so the only way to fulfill his desire in expressions was in confessing everything to his little mare .
It does not surprise us that the horse listens. It does surprise us, though, that we can't do what an animal can - to listen. In this part of the story, Iona pours his heart out to his horse. Despite Iono's pain, he has gained one thing - the realization of the importance of sharing pain.
On a personal note, I have gone through a miserable in my lifetime. I know what it’s like to long for someone to listen; not necessarily responding to my grief . “Misery” is about the absence of compassion towards people and their wretchedness . Chekhov ‘s story is an insightful look at human behavior. How sad is it that Iona must turn to his horse, an animal, for an outlet for his pain and misery?

Misery

...The story tells about a father and his great despair for his dead son. Iona, the father, is a Russian sleigh driver who desperately tried to share his grief with strangers. Iona wanted someone to listen to him, to somehow feel his grief, in order for him to feel better. This reading shows the harshness of human nature. It takes a powerful look at the lack of human involvement and compassion toward one man's grief. Iona tries unsuccessfully, three times, to find an outlet to his pain. Only resorting to the faithful ear of his horse does Iona reach resignation from the death of his son. Iona's first fare was a military officer. At first, this man seemed interested in Iona's story, but when Iona turned around to talk to him in more detail, the officer started shouting at him about his driving. This resulted in the military officer tuning Iona out. Iona's next fare was three obnoxious young men. They were unruly and offensive towards Iona but he gave them a ride anyway hoping they would just listen to him. Unfortunately, one of the men replied, "we shall all die," and Iona received no sympathy from them. Finally, when he could no longer hold his thoughts in any longer, he took his horse back to the stable. He came upon another cabman and Iona told him about his grief only to find the cabman was fast asleep. Iona wanted to tell someone the details of his son's death yet no one showed an interest. This only drove him deeper into grief and only intensified his emotions. He watches...

Reaction to "Misery"

...Reaction to "Misery" Iona Potapov, a sledge driver, is a peculiar character. Anton Chekhov, the writer, used a sense of mystery to unravel to the reader who Iona really is. In the beginning it seems as though Iona does not care about his surroundings or much about his job as a sledge driver. His first fare, or what we would call passenger, was an officer. As the office is talking to Iona he doesn’t even acknowledge that he is there. The officer has to repeat himself several times before Iona starts to move his carriage. As they are moving along, Iona starts to reveal the loss of his son. This will be the first time Iona tries to talk about his loss. Anton gives us 2 other occasions with other people, where Iona tries to talk about the misery he is feeling inside his heart. Anton’s theme is as his title, Misery. He shows how Iona is feeling miserable and alone and is just trying to reach out and talk with someone, and these other people just don’t care. He shows how others are caught up in their own lives to show compassion to someone who has just lost their son. I feel that at one time or another, everyone can relate to this feeling of misery. I have felt the pain that Iona is feeling in this story. There have been times where I have encountered a loss and have not been able to talk to anyone about it. Sometimes it was because at that moment I was not ready to talk about it. Other times I felt as though the people in my life were too busy to talk with me. The feeling of sadness...

A Life of Misery

...A Life of Misery College Writing II Mrs. Lloyd March 19, 2007 Theater is one of the most beautiful and magnificent works of art a person can whiteness. Although theater plays a small role in the society we live in today, it was not so back in the fifth century B.C., when Athens was in its prime, a society ahead of its time. Back then, theater was exceptionally popular, drawing up to 17,000 spectators a showing. Theaters were built all over and were glorious works of art alone. Theater was more then what we would consider going to see a movie or a sporting event; it was both a religious and civic occasion. Greek plays were only shown twice a year at religious festivals. These plays had deep meaning to them and portrayed an important myth or legendary event. One of the greatest and most popular Greek plays written is “Oedipus the King”, written by Sophocles. Although he never won a prize for the play, it has proven to be influential in many ways. Oedipus was born to the king and queen of Thebes, Laius and Jocasta. His parents were contacted by an oracle who told them that their son would kill Laius and marry his mother. Laius tied Oedipus’s feet together and gave it to a servant of the kind, the Sheppard, to kill. The Sheppard took pity on the child and gave him to another Sheppard to bring up on his own. This man gave the child to King Polybus and queen Merope of Corinth. Oedipus knows none of this and he thinks these two...

Life and Misery of Gypsies

...Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto's Era During the 1970 Election campaign, Mr. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto emerged as the clear front runner in the Punjab and Sind. He is the first person who has played a significant role in empowerment of women Pakistan. In his era, for the first time, women voted for the candidates of their own choice, irrespective of their husband’s desires. This was a big step in the political empowerment of women at the grass roots level. On assuming power in December 1970, Mr. Bhutto gave top priority to drafting a new constitution in which he especially highlited women rights. Begum Nasim Jahan and Begum Ashraf Abbasi were the two lady members of the Constitution Committee which is also an example of empowerment of women in Pakistan. The 1973 Constitution brought about greater gender equality, stipulating that there would be no discrimination on the basis of race, religion, caste or sex for appointment in the service of Pakistan. It also guaranteed reserved seats for women in Local Bodies and mandated that steps be taken to ensure the participation of women in all spheres of national life. However, as mentioned earlier, in spite of forceful demands put forward by APWA and other women organizations, and a determined effort made by Begum Nasim Jahan in the National Assembly, the principle of female suffrage for the reserved women’s seats, was not revived in the 1973 Constitution. Bhutto’s Law Minister, Mr. Abdul Hafeez Peerzada, felt that as in the past the political...

The Obliteration Of Old Misery Analysis

...London during bombings. This idea is also heavily focused on and shown through a short story written by Graham Greene. The obliteration of Old Misery’s house in this short story titled,“The Destructors” demonstrates that destruction is a form of creation. Old Misery’s house is the epitome of the past. The staircase as well as the paneling in the house are 200 years old. The house was built by a famous architect. In the time that the story takes place, architects are too becoming a thing of the past, as people don't care about the quality or appearance of the buildings that are created. Most of all, the house is the one of few to have survived the first blitz, a series of bombings in London. It is all that is left of the past, and it keeps Old Misery just there. He...

The Missouri community and government try very hard to maintain the family unit and help individuals to become self-sufficient by offering a variety of human services. When researching articles that described human services needs that people have in their lives, two newspaper pieces I found dealt with a teen suicide, a fourth article, published in a periodical produced by the American Public Welfare Association, looked at the services provided through Missouri’s Family Preservation Service to a young mother in crisis who was trying to take care of herself and a young baby. Reaction Paper-Short Story. "Misery" by Anton Chekhov

...Reaction Paper-Fiction: Short Story “Misery” by Anton Chekhov Scott Battaglioli University of Phoenix “Misery,” written by Anton Chekhov is a story about a lonely old sledge driver in 19th century Russia. In the story, Iona Potapov has just lost his son a week before. He is drowning in grief, expressed by his sitting still on his sledge and allowing himself to be covered in snow. He is a man who seems to have lost all hope. The only thing that Potapov wants is to discuss the loss of his son with another human being. He longs to connect to someone and try to make sense of the situation. Maybe he just seeks to connect so that he does not feel so alone. In this story Chekhov was trying to illustrate his belief that people have grown accustomed to the suffering of others, and therefore pay little attention to it. Chekhov shows us different characters with different personalities, but all indifferent to Potapov’s plight. The military officer is impatient and rude. He pretends to be deep in thought to avoid the conversation with Potapov. The three young men are self-absorbed and rowdy. They take advantage of Potapov’s grief and pay him an unfair wage. They also so abusive behavior towards him. The young cabby at the yard shows complete indifference to the older man’s suffering by falling asleep while Potapov bears his soul. Potapov’s final chance to get his feelings out comes with his horse. Though she cannot answer, she can listen. I think most people can...

First of all, consciousness and meditation could make people themselves control their emotions because meditation brings more consciousness and calm. When you calm down then you could stop any terrible action. Moreover, more meditation makes more remembrance, circumspect, and also relaxes. Work and Its Secret

...WORK AND ITS SECRET by SWAMI VIVEKANANDA (Delivered at Los Angeles, California, January 4, 1900) One of the greatest lessons I have learnt in my life is to pay as much attention to the means of work as to its end. He was a great man from whom I learnt it, and his own life was a practical demonstration of this great principle I have been always learning great lessons from that one principle, and it appears to me that all the secret of success is there; to pay as much attention to the means as to the end. Our great defect in life is that we are so much drawn to the ideal, the goal is so much more enchanting, so much more alluring, so much bigger in our mental horizon, that we lose sight of the details altogether. But whenever failure comes, if we analyse it critically, in ninety-nine per cent of cases we shall find that it was because we did not pay attention to the means. Proper attention to the finishing, strengthening, of the means is what we need. With the means all right, the end must come. We forget that it is the cause that produces the effect; the effect cannot come by itself; and unless the causes are exact, proper, and powerful, the effect will not be produced. Once the ideal is chosen and the means determined, we may almost let go the ideal, because we are sure it will be there, when the means are perfected. When the cause is there, there is no more difficulty about the effect, the effect is bound to come. If we take care of the...
