The story is about a group of women who were locked up in a women’s prison camp in the state of Moscow in the year 2000 where the women could not stand the living conditions or the bad food the were given. These women were not allowed to see their daughters while in this prison camp nor were they allowed paper and pencils to write there daughters, One day a woman of a different breed walked through the prison doors and the other women did not know what to think of this new prisoner named Olga the women thought she was the most beautiful they had ever seen the women though why ? Is she here all types of things went through the women’s head about Olga being a spy sent to spy on the women. The women also wanted to know why Olga isolated herself from them not speaking just listening. After a few days one woman went over and approached Olga while she was smoking her cigarette the to try and brake the ice to get Olga to speak she was nonchalant meaning no harm just trying to let her know how the plan to write letters to there daughters. Once Olga opened up the ladies explained how they save the paper from their cigarettes to write a letter to their daughters they haven’t seen in years some now adults. The women came together in conversation Olga was shown how the women were saving the paper so all four women can write a letter to their daughters and have it smuggled out by the first woman who was released. The thing of love about this story is how the women came together to write letters to their kids. The woman also thought Olga was there savior because she had a pen that all the women shared to get the letters ready. The thing I did not like is the fact that these women were not allowed visitation from their

...about their appearances. Shows how if you are not perfect, most popular, prettiest, how we can possibly be judged about it or made fun of. It was a HUGE eye opener on reality about how teenage girls act and think. How selfish people act to please their self, think only about our personal feelings forgetting about others and how they feel. This book is a real ca eye catcher by the cover and just by reading the summary about it. An individual’s ability to bring change in another person is an amazing thing. Just too even say their name or smile at them might just make their day. Throughout this book shows how you can change someone well at least try. “The purpose of life is not to be happy- but to matter, to be productive, to be useful, to have it make some difference that you have lived at all - leo rosten” The quote shows and resembles Kyle from the book. Trying his hardest to try and change Carley’s mind about her looks. That it did not matter that she had an ugly scare on her face just what was on the inside. Most important her personality and how she acted towards Kyle. Throughout Kyle kept telling her that to him she was beautiful, that it did not matter that she had that on her face, just that in his mind she was the most beautiful thing he had seen. How much Carley meant to Kyle and how special she really was. Even though Kyle was blind Kyle could still feel how beautiful Carley really was. Throughout the book Kyle showed that it did not matter what you look like, that...

Theory of the Forms

...Theory of the Forms and the Sensible World This paper will discuss the relationship between the knowledge of the forms and opinion about the sensible world. After describing the sensible world, Socrates brings up a new concept about how this world should be ruled. This paper will argue that because philosophy kings have knowledge about the forms they are better rulers of the sensible world, rather than sight-lovers. This paper is divided into two phases, each showing how Socrates has used the theory of the forms. Philosopher Kings and Sight Lovers: The idea of philosophy kings first comes up in Book V of the Republic at 473d. Socrates claims that the sensible world can only exist once kings, or those who rule practice philosophy. As Socrates is saying this, he himself realizes how his statement is somewhat radical. This radical claim by Socrates leads him to distinguish the difference between philosophy kings and sight lovers using the theory of the forms. At 476b (Rep. V), Socrates says that the lovers of sights only like beautiful characteristics such as shapes and sounds. Socrates argues that these individuals don’t see the underlying beauty. Although not explicitly mentioned, at this point, Socrates is using the theory of forms to distinguish philosophers and sight lovers. For sight-lovers, beauty is on a comparative basis; say for example “A” has beautiful features once it is observed alone. Once we compare “A” with all things beautiful, it may not posses the beauty it once...

The Book Thief Literary Analysis

...The Beautiful and Brutal Beauty and Brutality can co-exist, and this is something that is very present in The Book Thief. Imagery is used to convey the beauty and brutality. Zuzak uses sight, touch, and sound most often to show what is happening, and help make the beauty and brutality visible. Everything has beauty and brutality, and this is portrayed many times throughout the book. Beauty and Brutality is shown to co-exist when bombings would happen, Hans slapped Liesel, and the bombing of Himmel street happened. Beauty and Brutality was very prominent during some of the bombings that happened. Michael was a character and he was trying to get his mother to a bomb shelter. He cried to Rosa, Liesel’s step mother, “‘Tell me, Rosa, how can she sit there ready to die while I still want to live?’ The blood thickened. ‘Why do I want to live? I shouldn’t want to, but I do.’ (Zusak 487). He was trying everything to get her to move. He had a desire for life, something his mother lacked. Zuzak was using imagery, by hearing his voice, seeing his mother, and trying to pull her to the shelter. Even though this was brutal, beautiful moments were still happening. On Page 488, we learn of the event of the bomb shelter. “The night was long with bombs and reading. Her mouth was drying, but the book thief worked through fifty-four pages. The majority of children slept and didn’t hear the sirens of renewed safety. (Zusak 488)” In the midst of chaos, there was beauty in the...

The Mortal Instruments Trilogy Review

...THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS TRILOGY BOOK REVIEW SHADOWHUNTERS. The word that really caught my attention while walking down the hall of our local bookstore. The Mortal Instruments Trilogy is a young adult paranormal romance/urban fantasy, set in a colorful version of our reality where humans walk unaware of not just the vampires, werewolves, fey and warlocks, but also demons and their part-human enemies – the Shadowhunters. The author Judith Rumelt better known by her penname Cassandra Clare is a bestselling American author of young adult fiction. The books are inspired by the urban landscape of Manhattan, Cassandra’s favorite city. As I progress through, I found that the books are fast flowing with vivid characters, a lot of action, and interesting twists. The City of Bones, the first book of the trilogy, tells us about a seemingly ordinary teenager, Clary Fray, who live in New York City, discovers she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, a race of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons. After the disappearance of her mother, Clary must join forces with a group of Shadowhunters, who introduce her to a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld, filled with demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and other deadly creatures. As I read through the book I found each and every character such charming personalities, as if they where real. I become aware of there presence and starts to worry. The words used by Cassandra...

Are Eating Disorders Caused by the Media?

...the media is to blame for our nation’s epidemic of eating disorders because, not only do magazines and television portray skinny to be in, but also songs in our culture convey the attitude “…that only the beautiful and thin are valued and loved” (Hesse-Biber 88). Some women and men in the world are happy about how they look. Some think that they are ugly and reach toward plastic surgery, but even more think that the only way they can be happy is by starving themselves, or throwing up everything they have eaten that day. In this paper I will discuss facts and information on how the media is to blame for our nation’s epidemic, the pro’s and con’s to eating disorders and the media, and a few possibilities on how to fix this epidemic before it starts to spiral out of control. When you think about the billions and billions of people in this world, it is hard to believe that “2 million Americans-most of them women and girls-do suffer from eating disorders” (Gorman 110). That number is shocking isn’t it? How about the fact that “approximately 1 in 150 teenage girls in the U.S. falls prey to anorexia nervosa… Not so clear is how many more suffer from bulimia” (Gorman 110). What could be more shocking than knowing that “Anorexia has been diagnosed in girls as young as eight? Most deaths from the condition occur in women over 45” (Gorman 110)? There have been many studies that look at the number of women and men that suffer from eating disorders, some of them blame the media...

Beauty vs Brain

...Bismillahirahmanirrahiim In the name of Allah, the most gracious and the most merciful. All praises be to Allah SWT, the lord of the world, the master of the day after, and the creator of everything in this universe. Peace and salutation be upon our prophet Muhammad SAW, who has brought us from the darkness to the brightness, and guided us into the right way of life. Audience, in this opportunity I’d like to deliver a speech under the topic of “Beauty vs Brain” Ladies and gentleman, If God gave us ability and we had to choose ,which one would you prefer?would you prefer your looks or your personality?your beauty or your brain?maybe half of us will be so confused to choose, because half of people think that beauty is the most advantegous and half of people think that brain is more important. In reality, nowadays people gives value to looks more than personality. Nowadays people gives more chance to the beautiful one than the intelligent one. It’s sad that we live in a world where looking good gets you further in life than being intelligent. How it could be like this?this situation happens because we always judge the book by its cover,we just see the looks, but we never care about its contents. But,when it comes to me to choose whether the beauty or the brain,I’ll immediately choose the brain. Here in my speech, I’ll give 3 reasons why brain is so much better than beauty. My first reason, brain is better than beauty because brain is countable in most of the areas or most of the stages of human life...

Make Up

...Pearl S. Buck’s The Good Earth is about a farmer, Wang Lung, who experiences times of poverty and prosperity throughout his life; however, to summarize the book in one sentence is to do a great disservice to it. One of the novel’s recurring themes is that of beauty. The book takes place in China in the late 19th or early 20th century. Time has changed our world in many ways since then. Has time changed the meaning of beauty? Is there a difference in how the Chinese and Americans see beauty? Do we perceive beauty in different ways than the people in the time of The Good Earth? I conclude that the ideals of beauty have changed since the book was written and that modern American society has taken on new views of what it means to be beautiful. Men and women today can use cosmetics as part of a regular beauty routine to achieve certain beauty standards and to increase confidence. Throughout the last century in America, the very meaning of beauty has changed very often: from the Gibson Girl in the early 1900s to the flappers in the 1920s, from the full-figured pin-up girls of the 1940s and the 1950s to the “heroin chic” waifs of the 1990s, what the western world considered beautiful changed with each decade. When one considers beauty, it is now most likely physical appearance that comes to mind. Hilhorst notes, “The view that physical beauty can be conceived of as a value in its own right is, however, a modern thought.” Hilhorst explains in “Physical Beauty: Only Skin Deep...

Brain Is Better Than Beauty

...is different from a beast only for his brain that makes him learn to differentiate between good and evil. Physical beauty is an added quality. Life is enlightened for brains and not for beauty. A beautiful appearance with dull brains is of no use. On the other hand, a bugle appearance having a powerful brain can produce something for human welfare. So, brains have got prominence over beauty. Beauty and brains are two vital factors foe humans. Someone would prefer having beautiful and good looking appearance and feel they are very lucky. On the other hand, someone would prefer having brains. I would prefer having brains than beauty. Beauty is a comparative idea. Someone may be exceptionally beautiful wouldn’t last for life-time. One’s physical beauty can easily be abated. So the stability of physical attraction is not getting guarantee for life-time. If a beautiful women or a handsome man loses physical attraction, she or he would fail getting response from other people. It is sometimes said that brain or talent is god-gifted thing. If it is such a thing, it requires nourishment properly. If one’s brain is not is not used, he or she is surely to be a worthless creature. Through use or practice of brain a man can do lot for himself, for his society, for his country and even for the world. A man who can do a lot for himself, for have physical beauty necessarily. Grafitti

...they most likely to see? Graffiti. Graffiti is the deviant act of vandalism; it appears in many places, and in many forms. The artists that create these sometimes beautiful masterpieces are often overlooked, but their murals live on to be seen and added on to day after day. Most people feel that graffiti on any type of property is vandalism. If someone marks up an object it is distasteful and deviant, but sometimes it can be a work of art that gets overlooked. Janice Rahn, author of Painting without Permission also thought this, until she was given a project with her art students to graffiti garbage cans. After she was given this project Janice saw graffiti as artwork. She even took her friends and family around to sites that she found around her city, including an old set of warehouse businesses that had beautiful murals on them. Graffiti can be seen as an act of vandalism when it is used to deface public property. Many gangs like to mark their territory by putting their signs on things like buildings and street signs. When this is done it is not art it is wrong. People who are trying to make art get scorned because of people like this. When I am running I love to stop and look at what people create under bridges. I also like to see what cool works of art are painted on the sides of railroad cars and try to imagine how the artist came to make these beautiful masterpieces. It hurts me to see them being defaced by gang signs. Paul 107 the author of All City, the book about...

Gender Roles in Disney Movies

...poisoned by the evil witch?, Who did not want to ever be in the place of handsome John Smith or Pocahontas herself to revive their love story?, that tender these films, is not it, for example the Little Mermaid and Sebastian the crab song, who does not remember that song from "under the sea”? Has anybody ever wondered why the dwarves themselves did not do the housework when they came home once Snow White "moved in" with them? Or why an Indian as Pocahontas, falls for a murderer of thousands of his countrymen as was John Smith? Or why witches are always bad? Or why women are always in the background in these films (Hubka, Hovdestad & Tonmyr, 2009)? The world of Disney Princess began in 1937 when Snow White entered the world with the Seven Dwarfs (McRobbie, 2008). Since then it continued to add princesses in this world and the most recent movie was Tangled (Rapunzel) in 2011. In the past years, due to the lack of portraying ethnicity, Disney movie makers were highly criticized by their audience. Therefore, Pocahontas appeared in 1995 and after three years in 1998 came Mulan, which created a racially diverse collection of Disney princesses. After a decade The Princess and the Frog was released in 2009. It is important to understand that Disney plays an important role in societies today. The company has many princess films and has portrayed an image of different genders which is very well penetrated in the minds of children (Disney Princess, 2010). According to B. Davies masculinity...

...For the participant observation project I chose to do Chapters book store, which was located at Orchard park mall. The dates I went were; first 26th of July around 1.00 pm, second day was on the 31st of July around 4.00 pm, and finally on the 3rd of August around 11.00 pm. Through critical thinking and deep observation this article’s focus will be; rituals, gender codes, and consumerism (Schultz et al. 2012). Chapters book store is about selling books: the concept of consumerism is deeply tied to selling books. People buy books they prefer and due to consumer demand more books are brought in and sold. Furthermore, this repeated process of buying and selling has become some sort of ritual. There is a repeated process of consumerism at play here, this book buying process is out of daily routine, then there seems to be a schema which is buying books, all of these fits very well with the definition of ritual (Schultz et al. 2012). The people working at chapters and its customers are performing this ritual on a daily basis. There were other rituals such the process of buying of books as well.
