Genre Awareness Report

...find out what characteristics define an action movie and whether or not they hold true for all action movies, I decided to do some research using the internet. After looking at multiple movie posters I noted the similar characteristics between them all. When confronted with the similarities I further analyzed the posters and tried to determine what the reasoning behind the similarities was. Finally, I deciphered the reason behind them and made a decision on whether or not certain characteristics are present in all action movies. Introduction Action movies have been around since movies were first created. The visual effects and the actors have changed, but the feel is the same. When describing an action movie the average person thinks of guns, cars, explosions, violence and big action-star names such as Jason Statham. These are stereotypes of the action movie genre. These same stereotypical aspects, among others, are showcased in the posters. My aim for this report is to look at different movie posters of the same genre and look for common themes and elements between them and decipher the meanings and purpose. Methodology To find examples of movie posters I began my research by using google to search for images of known action movies. The first search was for the Expendables 2 poster. When looking at the results I saw that one poster was more frequent than the others and had a movie release date. I then cross-checked that movie poster with trusted sites such as imdb.com or...

The Station Agent

...is separated by people or groups. When in isolation it is very difficult for someone to come and comfort or break the barrier that has been built. The barrier is built in order to keep others away. It is the state of solitude. In the movie, The Station Agent, I believe the main theme was isolation. Isolation was a factor that played for all three main characters; Fin, who isolated himself from society because of his appearance, Joe, who isolated himself from friends because of his father’s business and Olivia, who isolated herself after the death of her son and the separation from her husband. The only way isolation can be prevented for these three characters is for them to feel a sense of belonging. Finbar McBride, also known as Fin is a little person. He does not like socializing with others, instead he much rather enjoys being left alone. In the beginning of the movie, I begin to think that maybe Fin loves trains so much because it’s a way for him to hide behind them. At work, in the train toy shop, he stands behind shelves and desks, making him barely noticeable and even outside near the train tracks, he tends to explore underneath the train. This focuses the movie on him being behind the bigger picture most of the time. Fin enjoys being left alone and isolated because it seems to be the only time where he is not mocked or seen as an amusing feature at an expedition. When Fin’s friend passes away and gives him the railway house, Fin is more than happy with his inheritance...

Genre Awareness

...Abstract In this paper I will be talking about three different movie posters of the American War genre. First I will describe where I found the movie posters, and then I will state the results of the visual elements. Then I will analyze, and critique the results of the findings. Introduction When someone walks along the hallway of a movie theater, they will see a series of movie posters which are there to advertise the movie. Humans are known to act on their first impression, and this is important in advertising because it will either attract or defer a potential viewer. Most people have a favorite movie genre, so they’re more inclined to watch a movie that appears to fit under their genre. Through the movie posters a patriotic theme is given off, which will invite in the intended audience. American War movies have very similar posters, although they will have different stories. Today I will be talking about three different movie posters of the American war genre: “American Sniper” (See Fig.1), “Fury” (See Fig.2), and “Lone Survivor” (See Fig. 3). The main purpose of this report is to find and analyze the visuals of the three movie posters. Methodology In order to try and test my hypothesis, I will need to find material that will allow me to gather the appropriate information. I am going to use the internet to find three movie posters of the same genre, and that genre is American war movies. First I will search on google images for American War...

Mother Dao

...Monnikendam in a surrealistic style uses propaganda film shot by colonial companies to indict them of the atrocities they committed. The images osculate between images of the indigenous people and the colonial machine. . They were originally filmed to portray the people as primitive, needy and sickly but Monnikendam turns our view, showing us early images of beauty and then gradually introducing the viewer to the toll of colonial oppression, until the end when the land and people are left raped, diminished and used up. In the Quick and the Dead, Rony repeatedly explains surrealism as the blurring of “the logical distinction between what is imaginary and what is real” and the “hallucination that is a face,” and the juxtapositions of logical dreams and the shock of nightmares. It is these mixings and blurrings that give so much power to the message of Mother Dao. It is these juxtapositions that heightens the impact of the images of the native peoples and their land At minute 2:07 of the movie continuing to 3:01 are three images that make for a beautiful sequence of the indigenous people leading a simple lifestyle, completely comfortable in their homeland. It begins in a village with a campfire. An older gentleman is in the center with children laughing and moving around him. There is a fence against what appears to be vegetation they are growing for harvest. What was shot to show primitiveness reveals such beauty and freedom. Next is a group of men. These men have...

The Movie "300" - Facts and Ficition

...The explosive movie “300” garners a wide range of praise and criticism from fans and critics alike. The overall movie stays true to the real-life story of the battle of Thermopylae and even has minor details depicted accurately, but it also leaves out major parts of the story. This contradiction of historical accuracy is the main reason for critics to give the movie a thumbs down. However, most of the fiction involved in the movie is pretty obvious and not meant to be taken literally, which, therefore, allows the viewer to enjoy the movie for its visual appeal and not necessarily for its historical teachings. In the end, the opinion of the movie is based on personal preference, but it is still worth mentioning some of the fiction involved in the movie and some of the factual depictions. Before the historical accuracy is discussed, a little information is needed. The movie “300” is an American historical action film made in 2007 and directed by Frank Miller. The movie is based off the graphic novel by the same name and has Gerard Butler in the starring role as the king of the Spartans, King Leonidas. The plot of “300” tells the story of King Leonidas as he leads 300 Spartan warriors in the battle of Thermopylae. This battle took place in 480 BC between a group of allied Greek soldiers, led by the 300 Spartan warriors, and the invading Persian army. Leonidas is only allowed to take 300 soldiers due to religious customs in Sparta going on at the time...

Into the Wild Analysis

...INTO THE WILD 10.09.13 Task 1 The movie focuses on different values of life. That you should be grateful for the things that is right in front of you. And that we as humans, should not take things for granted, and not always choose the easiest way out of situations. That is the reasons for the movie being so likeable, in my opinion. Because of the way the movie is being told, the watchers can almost feel the adrenalin kick Chris gets every time he sees a potential food source. We, who live on this earth, often forget about the beauty we are surrounded with every day. There are so many values in life, but in our daily life we are quickly to forget about them. And this movie really is a reminder. And because of this, I like the movie. We get to see life in an entire different setting. In the movie we clearly see the contrast in which ways different people want to live their life. And some watchers may feel that it is hard for them to comprehend why some of them would choose to live a life without a TV or a cellphone. For me it’s inspirational. Not in a way that it makes me want to go out into the wild and live without money and a reliable food source, but it makes me want to appreciate life even more than I already do. Instead of sitting inside in front of the TV, I should rather be outside, looking at the sunset. When it comes to the acting, it was excellent. We have Chris’ parents who are very focused on living a materialistic life, and then we have the ones Chris...

Wall - E Reaction Paper

...The movie WALL-E is, on the surface, a cute movie about a robot (WALL-E) that is left on earth after humanity evacuated it when they polluted the earth, and left much waste behind. It is WALL-E's job to clean up the mess. However, after 700 years of this job, it has started to make him eccentric. He collects artifacts from earth, and places them in his house. One day a scout drone comes to earth from one of humanities spaceships. This robot is named EVE. It is on a mission to find life on earth. WALL-E falls in love with EVE. Soon eve finds a plant that WALL-E had stored in his home. EVE then returns to the spaceship, with WALL-E following her. Hijinks ensure, and humanity is eventually led back to earth with the help of WALL-E. They then begin to repopulate earth. However, if you look underneath the 'cute' layer, you will find many references to religious stories. The two I am going to discuss are the tower of Babel and Noah's arc. To begin with, I will note the similarities with the 'Noah's arc' story. I am sure you will be familiar with the story, so here is an outline. God tells Noah that the world will flood for 40 days and nights, and that he should build a large boat and round up two of every animal to survive the flood. Noah does so, and then after he is finished, the world floods, from a lot of rain. After 40 days, the rain stops. So Noah send out a dove, which is called 'eve' in some stories, to retrieve a twig from dry land. After it returns, Noah determines that the...

The Truth of Fiction

...alongside the hero and are branded with the same mark of ‘punishment and poverty,’ to use Tutuola’s familiar phrase. (Truth of Fiction, 144)” According to the author’s statement and the interpretation of this passage, the force and power behind our emotions and imagination makes things seem vivid and alive to us, even if they are surreal. Our imagination and interpretation of what we see or read makes us relate to what we see. Like watching a movie, when we see the hero or heroine get shot or going through some kind of problems, the force and power behind our imagination makes us relate strongly to the character and even drives us almost to the point of crying for the hero/heroine. According to the author, things don’t just happen in front us or before us, our imagination makes the situation seems so powerful that it feels as if we’re the one going through the pain, not the actor/actress in the movie or hero/heroine in the book. Our imagination is very powerful and it makes surreal things seem real. Even though we know it’s just a movie and it’s not real, we still suffer along with the person in the movie. This is not because the person playing the character is a good actor or actress, according to Achebe, it is because of the force and power behind our imagination that makes us relate to the situation. Personally, my interpretation of the passage is that our imagination drives our emotions. One’s imagination is really powerful and sometimes our imaginations run wild with us....

The Outsiders Movie And Book Comparison Essay

...The Outsiders Book/Movie Comparison S. E. Hinton's story "The Outsiders" is a story the examines two different social groups in high school back in the 1960's. The book was such a big hit around the world that Francis Ford Coppola decided to make a movie out of it. When making the movie Francis didn’t want to leave out the little details that made the movie unique. There are many similarities and many differences between the book and the movie. My goal is to examine those similarities and differences and to look at the meaning behind the small details in the book and in the movie. One of the first similarities between the book and the movie was the 1960's setting. The book and movie both use old cars and the way the characters dress to express the story's 1960 setting. In both the book and movie the Socs drive new Mustangs and Corvairs, but the greasers drive old fixed up cars. "The Outsiders" book and movie both have a blue Mustang that is driven by the Socs. The Mustang represents fear and danger in the Greasers eyes, because whenever they see the Mustang coming they know something bad is about to go down. for his little brother, and that he wants Ponyboy to succeed in life. Another relationship represented in the book and the movie is between Johnny and Dally....

Film Sound

...Semester Term Paper: Film Sound Katayoun Nawabi University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill On my honor, I have neither given nor received aid in completing this assignment. _____________________________ Katayoun Nawabi In analyzing film, critics constantly gloss over the importance of the use of sound. Those critics that do touch on the function of sound often underestimate its role in the overall impact of the film as a whole. There are those that are of the opinion that there has been little, if any, real contributions made by sound in film. Should sound have been added to film at all? A look back at the history of film, from silent movies to “talkies” to major motion pictures of the 1990s, will help establish the fact that film has not only benefited from the addition of sound, but has only gotten more sophisticated with time. “Reevaluating the role of sound in film history and according it its true importance is not purely a critical or historical enterprise. The future of cinema is at stake. It can be better and livelier if it can learn something valuable from its own past” (Chion, 1994, p. 142). There is no argument that, in cinema, it is the image that will continue to radiate power and spectacle. However, the technological and conceptual advances that have been made over the decades reinforce the fact that it is the role of sound to decorate the image and “show” us what it wants us...

9/11 Apocalyptic Films

...post 9/11 apocalypse films tend to portray some sort of massive scale destruction; which is seen in the movie, Mad Max: Fury Road. This is immediately informed to the audience in the introduction when Max says, “my world is fire and blood” and “the world is running out of water”. Which raises a possible causation of what occurred. Additionally, the movie begins with a dessert scenery, where civilians fight for water as it pours out from the mountains controlled by the war lord. All this indicates that the possible causation for the massive destruction may have been a result of global warming, or anything in regards to the environment; which is something many people and politicians discuss serious in our world today. It is probable that the producers of Mad Max: Fury Road wanted to show the audience a possible outcome if society continues to disregard the attention our environment needs. Hence, the massive scale destruction described and seen in the movie gives light to a pessimistic view of the...
