Philadelphia Movie Review

I think the movie was okay, not something I would have watched on my own. This movie shows how one is discriminated against because of his disease. Discrimination comes in all kinds of forms, from racism, gender, age and more. I am not sure how this really fits into this period, other than it was in the early 80’s when people started to learn about aids. Homosexuals started coming out of the closet as they say. You had to be afraid to be gay because you would be persecuted for your sexual orientation. Everyone thought Aids was just related to the gay community, but it was also from doing drugs with someone that had the disease. Sharing needles from during heroin with someone that was a carrier. Therefore, here is my take on the movie.

Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks) is one of Philadelphia's most promising lawyers. He is the hot rookie and hired by a top law firm headed by Charles Wheeler (Jason Robards). Andy is also gay and dying from AIDS. When the physical signs of the disease begin to manifest themselves, the firm gets cold on Andy and he is out of a job. They tell him it is because he has an attitude problem and his work is mediocre, but Andy knows it is more personal than that. After no other law firm will take his case for unfair dismissal, his last resort is old adversary Joe Miller (Denzel Washington). Joe, a homophobe with an innate fear of AIDS, is reluctant to take the case also because of his personal reasons, but after seeing Andy humiliated in a public library, cannot resist standing his corner with him.

You can see immediately why Hollywood took this film to their heart. In typical Hollywood fashion, they cannot resist the temptation to dumb the issue down to make it easier to sell. It's a difficult thing sometimes, criticizing a film like 'Philadelphia' as it leaves the critic open to accusations of homophobia themselves, but 'Philadelphia' patronizes the homosexual community so much, it's like an instruction video for schoolkids "Listen kids - gays are people too, you know?". For instance, Andy's family is a carbon copy of the Walton's. A more loving, accepting family you could never hope to meet, right down to the last second cousin. Nevertheless, it would have been more interesting and realistic to show some conflict within the family. Would all of Andy's male heterosexual relatives been so accepting of him? People now who are still ostracized from their family because they are gay. In addition, gosh darn it, if Andy is not the sweetest human being you could ever hope to meet! He is handsome, great at his job, and loves babies too! This is not to say gay men are not like that at all, but this film is so scared of being homophobic, that it refuses to portray Andy as anything less than whiter-than-white. This is where it is so patronizing, that it becomes damaging.

There is one instant where the film does attempt to address the grey areas of these issues. Andy is questioned as to how he got AIDS, and it has revealed that it comes from an anonymous sexual encounter in a cinema. Nevertheless, Joe asking Andy to take his shirt off and reveal the lesions on his body neatly sidesteps this issue of personal responsibility. So just when the film is starting to make you question just how much danger Andy has been putting himself in, it distracts you with a moment of 'yuck' to make you conveniently forget these very relevant questions. "Hey everybody, don't worry about how he got it, just look at how nasty it's made him look!” It is this fogging of the personal and moral questions that makes 'Philadelphia' ultimately dishonest. Would this trick have been played if it was heterosexual man? Probably not, and it again highlights just how patronizing the films attitude is. We have to tiptoe around the dark areas, because he's - whisper it quietly- gay. There is attempts to color in the murky moral areas, but it takes more than groups of protesters crying, "God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve!" to achieve that.

Likewise, the law firm Andy sues. Instead of making them flawed, but understandable human beings, they are monsters. They are homophobic, racist and sexist. Who would have thought it? They sit around in their boy’s locker room telling homophobic and misogynistic jokes with an uncomfortable Andy present. Is there more to human beings than the odd sick or bad taste joke. Probably, but the film will not show that, it is too busy showing things in black and white. Philadelphia is guilty of the very clichés it sets out to crucify. A handsome student in a drug store hits upon Joe. Because Joe is obviously gay as he is defending a gay man in court, right.

This was the first Tom Hanks performance to garner him an Oscar and it is easy to see why - he is playing a gay man AND a victim of prejudice and disease! The Academy voters could not have wrote his name down fast enough when they saw that. Two issues for the price of one in the same performance. Too bad, he is very blank in the performance. There is nothing going on beneath the make-up, he is such a wholesome chap with the seedy aspects of his life brushed under the carpet. Hanks skill is to use his everyman persona to reflect the character back at the audience, but the script gives him nothing to work with. His best part is with no dialogue, coming out of Miller's office after Miller has initially dismissed his case. He says nothing, but surveys the cold streets with his watery blue eyes and for the only time we get a sense of the fear and hurt within Andy.

Otherwise, he is bland and we have to suffer the 'aria' scene, where Hanks (for once) goes totally over-the-top. Entranced by opera (he's definitely gay then) he stumbles around his flat, spouting gibberish about why he loves the music and its meaning, and all the while Jonathan Demme puts a ridiculous red glare over the scene. A pointless, arty and distracting scene designed to do nothing more than highlight Hanks, but it stands out like a sore thumb. It is hard to credit that this is the Demme that delivered the sleek, tense ‘Silence of the Lambs’ as the courtroom scenes has no power to them, and the whole film has a flabby pace to it.

Washington however, is the only reason to really watch 'Philadelphia'. His is the only character that has any depth to it. Miller is a conflicted man, he hates gays but he also knows that it is an irrational fear. He also knows that a law has been broken and that takes precedence over anything else. Washington gives a tenacious, controlled performance that never tumbles into tearful histrionics, but has an adult air to it that the rest of the film sorely lacks. If anyone, it should have been Washington that was Oscar tipped for this film.

As a courtroom drama, it is extremely limited because the film makes no bones as to who is in the right and as to how it is going to turn out. As an AIDS and gay rights drama, it is patronizing and downright offensive. 'Philadelphia' is the type of film that purports to ask intelligent questions, but actually makes the audiences mind up for them instead. A great waste of a topic, director and cast, the gay community deserve better.

Ethics in the Movie Philadelphia

...ETHICS IN PHILADELPHIA MOVIE (1993) In this paper, we are dealing with matters of ethics and profession from a contemporary perspective. Diseases also come in when you look at matters of employment and what the disease can do to someone in a particular profession. From an ethical perspective, one needs to stay honest in what they do. In this case of ours, Andy Beckett is forced to conceal his secrets about his health status and sexual orientation for fear of rebuke and rejection. These actions proves that he is unethical in his profession. However, it can be rightfully argued that he was right to stay like that. This is a condition of ethical dilemma whereby if one decides to be very honest as they are required they will lose credibility in their profession and end up being hurt. If they hide their secrets, they are thus breaching the ethical codes. This film presents to the audience the issue of discrimination and ethics. Thus, this Philadelphia movie of 1993 is an opportunity for all to discuss ethics as well as HIV/AIDS in the current organizations. I think that any lifestyle can never render someone inefficient and ineffective in their jobs. Beckett actually would still deliver what was expected of him. He had been a gay for a very long time but still delivered the work properly. By the fact that he defended his bosses in very many cases successfully since he is a quality lawyer. In the law field, Beckett had been a very successfully competent lawyer...

Ethical Issues in the Movie Philadelphia

...Philadelphia. The movie “Philadelphia” tells us a story about a successful lawyer – Andrew Beckett. He was fired when his boss figured out that he has AIDs. Andrew wants to sue the company for discrimination, but every lawyer refused him. Finally, he found Joe Miller, a person he used to work with once. At the end Beckett succeeds in his case. There are a lot of ethical issues in the movie, but I am going to write about three, I found the most important. The first ethical issue is discrimination. Beckett was fired from the company, when his co-workers figured out that he has AIDs and he is homosexual. The second ethical issue that I found interesting is lying. Is it okay that Andrew hided from his co-workers that he has a disease and he is homosexual? The third ethical issue is the betrayal. Basically, his co-workers and his boss got read of the documents he left on the table, which was unfair. The ethical dilemma that I want to look at in details is discrimination. The first step of Ethical Decision Making tells to gather the facts. What happened in the movie is that Andrew’s employers just knew that he is sick and homosexual. They did not know a lot about his life and personality. So, they did not gather the facts. However, during the movie we figure out that Andrew Beckett is good guy. Moreover, in 1990s, people did not have a lot of information about AIDs and how it spreads. The second step is to define the ethical issues. Andrew was fired without taking his case in...

Romantic Comedy

...that situation and they depict the situation well while adding humor to the situation. The Philadelphia Story, (1940), is a great romantic comedy that has a better story line, actors and even more scenery than the earlier compared movie, The Awful Truth (1937). The Awful Truth had basically the same storyline as The Philadelphia Story but there was a big difference in how it all played out and begun. The Philadelphia Story began with the wife throwing the husband out of the house and the husband pushing the wife down. The Awful Truth began with the married couple catching each other in a white lie and the dispute lead to a marriage breakup, so they both began with very interesting intros to their stories. The Philadelphia Story was based on a couple that went through a divorce, the wife ended up trying to remarry and it was a big topic that everyone wanted to know about. The way they placed the events in the movie was a key factor in how it all played out. For instance when the reporters were getting debriefed on the situation, they made the storyline for the movie more believable and gave the actors more to work with. In The Awful Truth really did not do such a great job in setting up events to structure the rest of its movie together it just kind of went from situation to situation with no ties. When it comes to the acting between the two movies, I would have to go with The Philadelphia story, simply because it was a well-rounded job done by every actor they made you feel like...

Rocky

...Feb 23, 2010 The movie I choose to write about was Rocky. Rocky was a very good movie and it was a motivational one as well. It shows how a nobody from Philadelphia became one of the toughest and greatest fighters to ever live. Rocky was a boxer who looked like he was going nowhere. One day the champ (Apollo Creed) came along and was looking to stir up the press by fighting a local fighter. Rocky was that fighter, he didn’t believe it at first but realized it was the opportunity of a lifetime. He trained and trained for weeks and he had his doubts but he didn’t back out. Me being from Philadelphia, its kind of funny because you see all the places I’m so familiar with and where was training I have been there many of times. In the process of him getting ready for the fight he meets a girl who he falls in love with (Adrian). She is one of his good friends sister but he treats he like trash. This movie really gets me motivated because in the process of him training there is the music I the background that gets you ready to do something. And while he is in the boxing ring fighting Apollo Creed the music is playing as well and you know that he is going to win the fight or that he’s not going to go down. Apollo Creed never expected to get this type of fight from some average boxer from Philadelphia. He really didn’t train for the fight at least, nowhere near as hard as Rocky did. In the end the fight came to a draw and Apollo Creed did not want to for Rocky again. A good lesson to...

Rhetoric Techniques In The Film 'Rocky Balboa'

...The film depicts the main character, Rocky Balboa, in a lower class neighborhood of Philadelphia, highlighting his surrounding environment, occupational value, friends and peers as impoverished. The first important part of the early exposition is the scenes showing Balboa at work, as a loan shark for a larger operation. This job requires Balboa to confront and physically assault debted customers if unable to make their respective payment. This lays the groundwork for the journey of achieving the “American Dream”. Balboa working such a low-end, odd job just to make ends meet symbolizes the working class, more specifically the lower class. This gives insight to the struggles these people face everyday, not only through Balboa’s work as a loan shark, but the dock worker in a dirty environment who is unable to pay his loan in the same scene. Many signs throughout the early exposition align with the reasoning within the rhetorical framework. For example, Rocky attempts to go to the boxing gym but because of his lack of success and low amount of money, Mick gives Rocky’s locker to...

Andy has two lives, the conservative Andy at work, and the homosexual Andy who has contracted the HIV virus. Evaluation of the Movie "42"

...Evaluation of the Movie “42” When I first viewed this movie, I already knew some of Jackie Robinson’s history, but I was still moved by this revealing depiction of his life during the years 1945-1947. This true story, which was released April 12, 2013, followed what I had learned about Jackie and stayed accurate while still being extremely entertaining. Jackie Robinson’s number on his jersey was 42, he wore that number his entire Major League career with the Brooklyn Dodgers. The movie “42” is a biopic of the legendary baseball player Jackie Robinson, when in 1947 Jackie became the first African-American player to break Major League Baseball’s color barrier. The great directing, acting, and writing made this film enjoyable to watch. This well-made movie primarily tells the story of Jackie Robinson under the direction of his general manager Branch Rickey, while showing us Jackie’s battles with racism and a classic love story. “42” is a snapshot in the life of Jackie Robinson, which allows the movie to run at a nice pace. As Bernard Beck points out, in The Dark Knight Rises: In 42 Jackie Robinson Saves The American Dream, “Our attention is not fixed on how he became a great player, on how he succeeded in his career after that first year, or how they built a family. We are shown the great pressure they were under and that they handled it” (89). The movie starts out in 1946, when Branch Rickey the legendary general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers decides that he is going to bring...

Why Should Huckleberry Finn Be Banned

...The world doesn’t always fit comfortably into peoples simplistic, idealistic self-importance. Nor should it. And now grand ideas have been replaced with ridiculous overstatements, with nobody around to say, “But maybe you’re wrong.” Actually, there are people saying that. But no one is listening. Because to be confronted with a different view is offensive. You just watched a show you dislike? Doesn’t make it the worst show in the history of television. Everything you dislike is not the worst thing ever. Every movie you like is not a four-star film. Every good movie does not “deserve to be nominated for best picture.”Every movie you hate is not the worst movie ever made. Every bad movie is not a “piece of crap.” Everything is not a travesty. We have reached the hyperbolic fake outrage height. Hence, it’s no longer enough that we just pretend to be incensed over semi-offensive moments of minor significance. We have to scour the Internet in search of pointless feel good stories to celebrate and heroes to applaud. And where does all this ridiculousness start? Movie Critique / the Sixth Sense

...Film Critique / The Sixth Sense For my final project, I decided to critique and analyze various features of the movie, The Sixth Sense. I will use a structural approach to examine the film’s edifice and explain how the productions of scenes and shots tell the overall story (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011). I will demonstrate how the genre and the rating of the movie do not appropriately fit its criteria, and how the motion picture evaluation system failed by revealing horrific scenes to teens by assigning the PG-13 rating. In addition to that, I will illuminate inconsistent and unexplained actions with continuity glitches throughout the movie. Regardless of its mistakes, the film became a great success, because the plot of the movie allowed the audience to explore a different side of life after death and the grief that comes with it. Ultimately, the movie The Sixth Sense can be perceived as a therapy, because it gives us tools on how to deal with fear and helps us learn about the ways on how to come with terms of loss. It also explains the importance of communication between a doctor and the patient, a husband and a wife, a mother and a son, and of course, between our society and ourselves. Two unalike families contribute to the story’s plot. Two separate lives of Cole (played by Haley Joel Osment) and his mother Lynn (played by Toni Collette), and a psychologist Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) with his wife Anna (played by Olivia Williams). The story begins with an ordinary psychologist...
