The Music Man Play Analysis

...On Thursday, September 24th, I attended the opening night performance of the musical “Music Man” at the Looking Glass Playhouse in Lebanon, Illinois. The doors opened at 7pm and the play began promptly at 7:30pm after a fundraising pie raffle and brief introduction by the director, Glenn Netemeyer. Although I had previously experienced theatrical performances at the high school, community theatre, and professional theatre levels, this overall experience left me with a lasting impression different from all of the rest, possibly due to my recently gained understanding of theatrical productions and their elements. The setting of the play within the playhouse, the interpretation of the play being performed and the elements within it, and the...

Analysis of Music

...Analysis of Music Student’s Name Institutional Affiliation One of the advantages of breaking rules and exploring beyond is that one comes out with something that has never been experienced before. For this reason, Beethoven and The Beatles established themselves in the music industry because they created a norm that every new artiste followed. Composers that followed them always tried to be like them. On the other hand, there is a cost in breaking the existing musical rules. People always want to hear what they love from their past musical experiences. Introducing a new genre may not auger well with the popular style. Despite being radical composer, Beethoven actually composed what people liked. R. Murray Schafer has been successful in breaking the musical composition rules. One of his radical music was East, composed in the year 1972. It was totally different from the traditional techniques at that time. It had slow glissandos and the performers sung and hummed on top of playing the instruments. Generally, Murray employed his compositional creativity to challenge his listeners as well as the performers of his music. The spice girls joined the Pop music in the 90s and became successful. Their strength was largely due to the perfect combination of each individual talent and voice in addition to their youthful vigor. Michael Jackson broke the rules of the existing Pop music and introduced a style that was outstanding for four decades. Michael introduced sophisticated...

Ethnic Diversity

...America. By the time the number of Latin Americans increased to reach 30 million with different ancestral, cultural background and traditions, those immigrants establish their own heritage, customs, traditions and values to build their own identity. This raises the concept of panethnicity. Panethnicity is a collection of different small identities which form a community. The different ethnicities in panethnic community have similarities in their customs, values, language and music. ( Andrea Bedoya, 2007, P1). ...othering of Middle Easterners through its manipulation of time to show the dehumanization of Arabs as a threat to society and to stress the immediacy with which Americans must act against to such dangers. In this scene, 24 employs film analysis elements including windowing and time stamps to manipulate time in a way that emphasizes the immediacy of these actions and alters time as if it were real-time in order to show how Middle Easterners are often “othered” in a post-9/11 world. After the President of the United States has learned of the impending terrorist attack that is to occur in Los Angeles later that day, he says to a colleague that “there is a terrorist with his finger on a trigger, and [they’ve] got to get him.” While he is giving this statement, the episode employs a windowing effect in which the president is speaking in the top half of the screen and a Middle Eastern man, named Reza Naiyeer, is presented on the bottom half while he is driving in a convertible and speaking Arabic on the phone. The use of windowing in this scene helps present time as compressed by placing these two separate events simultaneously in the same screen, thus leading the audience to believe that these two events are related and that the Middle Eastern man is a terrorist involved in the anticipated attack. The placement of the president on top of Reza in this compressed windowing effect also exemplifies a portrayal...

The Meaning of Independent Woman in Music

...THE MEANING OF 'INDEPENDENT WOMAN'' IN MUSIC MiA MOODY Introduction Rapper Roxanne Shanté's 1989 rendition of "Independent Woman," explored relationships and admonished women not to dote on partners who do not reciprocate or to buy into the fairytale dream that a man would always take care of them. The definition of an "Independent Woman" in the Urban Dictionary, a predominantly African American written and defined Web site, is "A woman who pays her own bills, buys her own things, and does not allow a man to affect her stability or self-confidence. She supports herself on her own entirely and is proud to be able to do so." Another depiction of independence is found in Tina Portis' video clip titled the "Deception of the Independent Woman" posted to YouTube in 2010. Portis, an entrepreneur and former single mother, offers her opinion on statistics showing 42% of U.S. black women have never been married and are "independent" because they focus on achievement, often waiting too long to compete for the small number of black men who are equal in status (Johnson, 2010). In the video, she asserts that independent women do not need a pat on the back for doing what grownups are supposed to do: pay their bills, buy houses and cars, etc. She adds that independence discourages relationships as people begin to believe they can do everything alone, so they do not need a mate. Sonnet 29

...William Shakespeare's Sonnet 29 Reflection and Analysis Ashley Terreforte Introduction to Literature Instructor Danielle Slaughter March 27th, 2013 In this paper I will be explaining why I find William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 29 interesting and what about the sonnet that catches my attention. I have always been a big fan of all of Shakespeare’s work only because his writing style and the words he uses to make his point within the play, sonnet, or piece of literature. The way Shakespeare writes I find very interesting and sometimes confuses me but that is what keeps me interested because I am continually learning how to define what it is that Shakespeare is trying to say within his literature. In William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 29 the form, language, and content of the poem are what keep in engaged and wondering what would go through Shakespeare's mind when he sat down to write Sonnet 29. The form in which Shakespeare wrote Sonnet 29 and many other of his sonnets with the AB AB CD CD EF EF GG form reminds me of the notes on a music staff and that is what keeps most interested because in my head I look at it as a song and in a way it kind of is. The Elements in which kept me intrigued in William Shakespeare's Sonnet 29 did not affect my response to the poem, however because of the language used to write the poem I did tend to focus more on trying to understand what Shakespeare was saying because of the language used. In William Shakespeare's Sonnet 29 the form in which he...

...Charles Higson Analysis In this short story by Charles Higson we are introduced to three characters (four, including Cathy) that have nothing in common whatsoever. They come from different environments, backgrounds and families. However, as the story proceeds we discover how fragile, weak and alike they become when their fears take over their lives. I will therefore do a thorough analysis focusing on fear of the unknown as the main theme. In order to do that, I find it important to do a characterization to gain an insight to the four protagonists’ personalities. Berto, Denise and “the nameless guy” are all sitting in the same cabin in The Tube in London. Berto is visiting London trying to find the love of his life, Cathy, an English girl who has visited Berto in Italy where they have had an affair. To his disappointment he comes to find out that she is in a relationship. She leaves him in the Tube after an argument. He feels very self-conscious about speaking English. He has asked for directions and he hasn’t been able to make himself clear, so the man just laughed at him and it has been very humiliating. Another obstacle for him is his pride. He is on the platform and he is deciding whether he should ask anybody for directions and he keeps making excuses of why he shouldn’t. The old women are deaf, some of the men seem drunk and so on. Nobody is good enough. He is actually ashamed of asking for the cherub’s help. (“Why was he ashamed to ask a man for help? He was...
