Grych, J. H., & Fincham, F. D. (1993). Children's appraisals of marital conflict: Initial investigation of the cognitive-contextual framework. Child Development, 64,215 - 230.
Hypothesis:
Children's conflict appraisals guide their coping responses. In particular, deciding whether or not to intervene in the conflict will be strongly influenced by children's interpretations. For example, children who believe that they are at fault for causing a disagreement may then feel responsible for resolving the dispute, and thus attributions of self-blame are likely to lead to children's involvement in the conflict. Fearing for the safety of one parent also may promote intervention, whereas perceiving a high level of threat to the self may lead children to avoid intervening in a disagreement. Whether they involve themselves in a conflict also depends on children's coping efficacy, which in turn is shaped by prior experiences in the family.
(a) children's appraisals are systematically related to specific dimensions (intensity and content) of marital conflict.
1. It was predicted that high-intensity conflict would be viewed as more likely to escalate than low-intensity conflict, and that child-related conflict would be perceived as more likely to involve the child than nonchild-related conflict.
2. Children who blame themselves for conflict are likely to elicit self-blame than non-child-related content. No specific hypotheses were made for the effect of conflict intensity on self-blame.
3. Children would feel more able to cope with low than with high-intensity conflict.
4. Children would feel more able to do something to stop the disagreement if the child believes they did something to cause the disagreement.
5. High-intensity conflicts would lead to increases in all types of negative affect, but that the child related content would have a more

The One That Got Away

...years to the early Celts in Ireland! A long time ago, the Celtics believed that Summer ended on October 31. So to get prepared for the end of the season of harvest or life and get ready for the season of death they celebrated Samhain. They believed that on this day the gap between the living and the dead was thinnest and that ghost and ferries could easily cross over. The Celtics would leave food at their doors to keep ghosts at bay and would wear costumes to “blend in” with the dead spirits. This is where we get our costumes today. They believed dressing up would honor the good spirits and keep away the bad ones. Sometime around the 8th century Pope Gregory the 4th merged All Saint’s day with the same day as Samhain and merged the traditions. One of the being children going door to door asking for baked cakes in return of praying for the other person’s dead family in purgatory. Another one was called “guising” wear people would wear masks and go door to door dancing and singing in return for food and wine. Does this sound a little familiar? In early America, Halloween wasn’t really celebrated because of the Puritan beliefs but with the...

The One That Got Away

...An essential part of the hiring process is the interview. Potential new hires are usually aware of the importance of the interview, the significance of making a good first impression, and the need to come into an interview completely prepared. However, the interview is a two-way street, and unfortunately some managers/supervisors do not come into interviews with the same degree of preparedness and professionalism as the interviewee. "The One That Got Away" is about Dennis, the dining-room manager of a coffee shop within a large hotel. Dennis receives a drop-in application from Donna, a potential candidate for a waitress position. Instead of scheduling an interview for a more convenient time or asking Donna to please come back during the posted interview times, Dennis decides to interview Donna in the dining room on the spot. This case study fills the reader in on Dennis's biases against hiring married women with children prior to his interview with Donna. After Dennis gets one of his employees to temporarily take over his hosting duties he sits down with Donna at a table close to the door so he can keep an eye on things while he interviews her. He begins by looking over her application, but is interrupted numerous times by other employees and leaves the interview to attend to the problems. Although he is impressed by Donna's resume, he is never able to have a complete uninterrupted conversation with her. Dennis also asks inappropriate questions to Donna regarding...

Of Mice And Men Dreams Essay

...However, in Of Mice and Men George and Candy work hard all day to get their dream farm but the dream got terminated. In Of Mice and Men John Steinbeck clearly supports the theme that dreams can be taken away in a blink of an eye through the characters of George, Candy and Curley’s wife. George is one example who illustrates the theme that dreams can be taken away in a blink of an eye. George is a small man who travels and takes care of Lennie his best friend. He always speaks about how much better his life would be without Lennie due to his childish actions but he is clearly devoted to him. He had a dream that him and Lennie would get a farm. For example, when George and Lennie were talking George mentioned them getting a farm and Lennie...

...mine has an interesting take on what he calls “annoying interview questions” – and that includes questions about where you see yourself five years from now. (Others are about your greatest strength or weakness.) While there’s certainly no one “right” answer for a question like that, some approaches work better than others.  OSE ANNOYING INTERVIEW QUESTIONS by L. Bosco Interviews are a pain in the neck! Ideally you want to see if there’s a good fit between you and the employer. But most interviews are full of those “pat questions” that have been written up endlessly in books and even on blogs where so-called experts give job applicants handy-dandy “pat answers” to those over-used “pat questions.” So basically both sides could just as well e-mail in their parts and save everyone a lot of time. It’s a rare interviewer who knows how to create a really informative interview. So job seekers must still sit through these often painful interviews (some where the interviewer is barely listening) and be prepared to answer these same silly questions: What is your greatest weakness? What are your strengths? How would you handle an angry customer? And, my personal not-favorite: “Where do you want to be in 5 years?” I always want to answer that last one with something like “living in Bora Bora on my lotto winnings” or “King of Siam” or at least “Sophia’s latest lover.” (The name mentioned to be filled in by you based on your own gender, age, preferences, and imagination.)
