Paul Signac’s Antibes, the Pink Cloud was created in 1916. The medium that the Parisian used was oil paint on a canvas. It was created in Antibes, France but is now on display in Gallery 225 at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in the Isabelle and Scott Black Collection (MFA information plaque). The painting depicts a small purple sailboat with a green and red sail in the sea underneath an enormous, majorly, pink cloud in the light blue sky with two other red sailboats and purple steam boats. The enormous pink cloud and the light blue sky is reflected into the sea and the purple sailboat has a dark reflection in the sea as well. The sailboat is in the center of the painting while the cloud is above and behind the sailboat. The other sailboats are to the right and behind the main sailboat and the steam boats are all the way to the right in the far distance. The time of day in the work, which can be determined from the color of the cloud and sky, appears to be sunset and the sun is off canvas at the top left corner. The viewer is meant to be looking at this view of the boats and massive cloud from land and to be peering at the landscape from the very edge of the water due to no land being shown. The primary focus of the painting is the sailboat that is located within the foreground of the painting. The focus divides the painting nearly symmetrically, the sky and the lake are almost even and the boat is right in the center to keep the painting balanced. The sailboat also in a way creates a dark arrow that makes the eye go to the pink cloud. The painting contains primary colors (blue, red, and yellow). There are many hues of purple for darker clouds, pink for the cloud, light greens for the sea and sail, various blues for the sky and shadow for the pink cloud, some dark reds for the sailboats and dark purple for the steam boats in distance for contrast, and

Color Red In The Great Gatsby

...Red is used in the description of the houses of East Egg,” …a cheerful red-and-white Georgian colonial mansion…” (6), which shows that red is related to wealth and royalty. Red is also used later in the novel to describe the blood of Gatsby after he was killed by George Wilson. Nick describes the scene, “…like the leg of transit, a thin red circle in the water” (162), and this reveals the violence related to the color red. Another color that is similar to red but is not quite the same is pink. This color was used in the novel by Daisy when talking about Gatsby, where at one point she said, “I'd like to just get one of those pink clouds and put you in it and push you around,” (94). It was also used when Nick describes Gatsby’s suit in chapter eight, “His gorgeous pink rag of a suit made a bright spot of color against the white steps…” (154). This color is primarily used to describe Gatsby, once again to show that he does not fit in with the Old Rich lifestyle because he is pink and they are red. He is simply living a takeoff of their lifestyle instead of being a real part of it. If only he could fit in, then Daisy would be with him, or so he...

My Dream Short Story

...The light green grass is flattened by our tan straw mat as I watched the white clouds slowly drift in the beautiful blue sky. Everything felt perfect as time had stopped itself and it was completely silent. I looked to my right side and see a girl with long, straight, luscious brown hair lying on her back beside me, staring at the sky as if she was beginning to sink into a trance. She then put out her delicate light tan hand, and as I go to reach it everything turns white... My hazel eyes are blinded as the sun shines through my blinds to illuminate the dark room around me. “This is the fourth time I’ve had this dream this week!”, I mutter to myself in my deep voice. I sluggishly drag myself out of my queen sized bed. My blurry eyesight adjusts as my eyes wander around my gray and white colored room. I walk to the bathroom and turn on the faucet. I wash my face with my clean & clear benzoyl peroxide wash and pat my face with my red towel. I look in the mirror and see my smooth tan skin, medium sized nose, slim eyebrows, long eyelashes, smooth pink lips, chiseled jawline and muscular body. I open my mouth to reveal two rows of...

Museum Paper

...November 2, 2014 Museum Paper A work of art that I kept going back to and really impressed me was a piece titled “Woman Reading” by artist Eastman Johnson. Eastman Johnson is an American Artist that painted scenes of everyday life in America, along with portraits. It was painted in 1874 and is an oil on board. The paintings size is 25 1/8 inches by 18 5/8 inches. The piece is a painting of a woman reading a book with a sailboat in the background. In describing this work of art in detail, I’d have to start off by describing the colors in the painting. At the top starts with blue for the sky, then you see pink clouds then really blend down with pinkish/grey and green water and brown dirt and grass. These colors are all blended together. There really is no definite horizon line between sky and water. The sky and clouds have varying different shades of blue, pinks and blending with a touches of grey. Even with that said the only way you can really tell it’s the water is because there is a sail boat there and you can see the reflection. The water is portrayed as dead calm where the ship is. No waves or white caps. I don’t believe there is any breeze at all. Johnson painted a ship on the water with tall white sails, and showed its reflection on the water. Without the ship there, I’m not sure you would have been able to tell there was water. The colors all blend together so beautifully. Johnson painted the woman in ordinary dress for the time. She is dressed in a brownish/black...

El Gordo Apod

...billion times as much as our sun. A cluster unlike any previously discovered. The photo for April 22, 2014 of “El Gorgo Massive Galaxy Cluster” stuck out from other pictures taken on NASA’s Astronomy Picture of The Day. The appearance of this galaxy was especially fascinating. I was drawn by the image’s bright spots and blue and pink colors. The image is a combination of a visible light image by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2002, an X-ray image from the Chandra Observatory of the hot gas in pink in 2014, and computer generated dark matter in blue through gravitational lens distortions. The bright spots in the image are galaxies within and beyond the cluster. Remains of radiation from the Big Bang along with electrons from hot gas in the galaxy cluster creates the warping seen from earth. Hubble's high resolution shows the distortion in space caused by gravity. This warps the background of galaxies in the image. The more mass in the cluster the larger the distortions. The long vertical galaxy in the image is far more distant and the light is being stretched as it travels towards us through gravitational lens caused by the massive cluster. The pink color across the image is the hot gas that was slowed down by the collision. The blue color across the picture is dark matter...

Thomas Cole For Your Hunting Room Analysis

...On this quest, I have come upon a large American Romantic oil painting by Thomas Cole for your hunting room. The painting incorates aspects of nature such as flowing rivers and creeks, and exhibits hunters tracking animals in a lust forest. The artist depicts an early morning scene of a harsh mountainous landscape, where early civilization begins to form a community within a treacherous forest. Dark earthy colors of green and brown cover the timberland, while murky blues and grays distinguish the ocean shoreline and the thunderstorm among the distant mountains.     In the background of the painting dusty pinks and blues form the sky of the rising sun, while beams of light begin to hit the mountain peak. In the distance, the unruffled ocean meets the pale gold morning horizon. As the sun rises in the east it appears to push away the gloomy storm clouds which mask the seabank and west side of the mountain. The two sides of the sky contrast each other, creating a focal point which draws the...

Gauguin and Tahitian Inspiration and Spirituality

...from Tahiti. It is oil on canvas, 26 7/8 x 36 inches. This piece of artwork depicts a group of women in an island setting. In the upper right portion of the painting, there are two women carrying a large tray above their heads. They are both dressed in white, ankle length strapless dresses. Both women have long, black hair and the women closer to the center of the painting seems to have her hair in a low ponytail. They are standing on a grassy embankment of green. In front of them is a pink embankment. There is a thin strip of yellow sandy beach that leads to the ocean behind them. In the background there is a wave with a white crest and a group of palm trees. The sky above the two ladies is partly cloudy with a vibrant blue peeking out from behind the white and grey cloud. In the upper center portion of the painting, there is a large figure standing on top of a brown platform surrounded by a group of rocks. The ocean looms behind the figure and the pink and purple embankment is in front of the figure. This figure has brownish grey skin and is wearing a blue codpiece with brown trim on the top. There is a blue skirt attached to the back portion of the codpiece, from hip to hip. This skirt seems to extend longer than the elevated platform the figure stands on. This figure has large, stony facial features. The black hair of this figure is parted in the middle and there is a large blue moon directly behind the head. This figure is standing...

Childhood Memories

...Inside there would be a handmade invitation. In Grandma’s carefully written Palmer Method cursive would be the phrase “You are cordially invited to a Special Party.” Time suddenly slowed. Minutes seemed like hours, days even. The wait was horrible because Special Parties had to start after dark. After we had eaten dinner and cleared the table we would sit on Grandma’s huge couch with the itchy brown fabric. We’d fidget around, casting furtive glances out of the living room window. As the first pink glow from the sunset started we’d cheer and tell Grandma it was time. She would always tell us to give her a few minutes. “Preparations need to be made!” After what seemed like an eternity, Grandma would call us into the kitchen. The only source of light would be a candle flickering away in a small pink Depression glass candleholder. Three chairs would be placed around the drop leaf table. On the table there would be a deck of cards, 3 pennies at each place setting, and a pink Depression glass sherbet parfait glass with gold around the rim. Grandma had gotten the glasses as a wedding present from her mother. They were very dear to her. The only thing I ever saw them used for were Special Parties. To me that made the...

Descriptive Writing About Hawaii

...California. Two tickets for an all expense paid cruise to Hawaii was offered to me by a close friend, and I gladly took the offer. A relaxing five day cruise was just what I needed. I enjoyed getting away from the stress at home, and coming to this heaven of a boat. I lay on the sun deck, enjoying the terrific weather, watching partygoers dance and swim on the main deck below. Dark clouds could be seen in the distance, but I wasn't going to let that ruin my day. The blissful and breezy air blew against my skin as I sipped on pineapple juice, and took into consideration the beauty of the ship. So many decks, and so many things to enjoy! The ship looked like a massive floating hotel! The hull of the ship was huge, and a blue decal of an anchor was slapped on the side. This ship was so big it could have probably been seen from miles and miles...

Analysis Of Maniac Magee By Jerry Spinelli

...In the fictional novel, Maniac Magee, by Jerry Spinelli, the main character, Jeffery Magee, is an orphan who is searching for a caring family. I am grateful to have a loving family that I can make wonderful memories with. Two of my favorite family memories are my 5th birthday and my 8th birthday party. I remember that the day of my 5th birthday was a gorgeous, spring day, the sky was light blue without a cloud in sight. My parents had surprised me by taking me to Disneyland (at the time I was a huge Disney fan). I was ecstatic that I would get to meet all the Disney characters, and I loved going inside of a castle and taking pictures with all the Disney princesses. After that I went on some rides, my favorite ride was a ride where we got on...

...Funfair The announcement of spring brings with it the promise of childish whims. Adventures to the beach. Picnics in the park. Endless possibilities. But, for the teenagers and the so called ‘adults’ that we call ‘Big Kids’, there is the funfair! The roar of music. The drums, thumping in the distance, like an elephant that rushes towards them. The bass tingling through their adrenaline-pumped bodies; racing through their blood; streaming through their system; while being blinded by the beaming rays of sunlight. Arriving at the park with stomachs full of butterflies baited on a high from sheer adrenaline, the punters swarm. Their hands are shaking, their palms sweating; listening to the sounds of the rides as they call out to them. The screaming children love the thrilling sensation that trickled through their bodies; while the mix of music from ever other ride overpowers the sound of the lone girl crying out for her friends. The luminous cloudless sky suddenly became sullen; provoking an eerie atmosphere from deep within an opaque sky. The cool breeze slivers around the skin of a young girl, creating goose bumps on top of goose bumps; across her bare, suntanned shoulders. The sunburn felt like sharpened daggers, piercing through her irritated flesh; one...by...one... Slowly and gently, the sun began to sink beneath the thick, rolling horizon, its amber rays continue to melt and glow like a crimson ink stain on the black abyss of night. This night is ablaze; luminescent...
