The Power in Words Speeches can be one of the most difficult things to write and present. Anyone can give a speech about anything, but not all of them are going to be amazing. Actually, speeches are one of those things that not everyone is going to feel the same about. One person could think that the speech was great and it changed their life, while another person could absolutely hate that same speech. Most speeches are given to persuade your audience to believe whatever it is that you believe. The speaker wants them to agree with what they are saying. The President of the United States has a huge job when it comes to public speaking. They are addressing a whole country that is looking to them for their opinion, advice, or guidance.
Even though not every citizen in the country is going to agree with what the president is saying, it is usually over an important issue, so the president is completely aware that everyone will be listening. On January 28, 1986, while Ronald Reagan was serving as president, the country experienced a huge tragedy when the Challenger space shuttle exploded on live television. It wasn’t really an event that words could describe, but as the president, Reagan had to try. Through the use of ethos and pathos, President Reagan’s speech attempts to persuade America and the viewers of the Challenger explosion that despite the tragedy, the United States and its space program will continue to move forward.
President Reagan uses ethos by making sure that the audience knows who he is and what his purpose is. He starts out the very beginning of his speech by letting everyone know his change of plans from speaking about the state of the Union to speaking about the national tragedy. Words have played an important role in our world today. Whether a word is spoken or written, words have the power to change our world. As you improve your critical thinking, reading, and writing skills by looking at the stories, you will understand how words play a major impact. Try and use your words and respond and think critically. You might want to try bringing you own knowledge, opinions, and experiences, and try and relate them to what you are reading. For example, In Mortimer J. Alder’s short story “ How to Mark a Book” he is trying to persuade us to “write between the lines” (Alder 2). When you are reading a story, you are reading between the lines. By reading or writing between the lines, that gives you a better understanding of what the author is trying to tell you. Alder mentions in his text the importance of marking up a book (Alder 9). First it keeps you awake. In the second place, reading if it is active, is thinking, and thinking tends to express itself in words, spoken or written (Alder 9). Finally writing helps you remember the thoughts you had, or the thoughts you expressed (Alder 9). This can relate to responding critically. The power of words should not be underestimated. Liesel proves this to be true in the novel and the film The Book Thief. She uses words to develop relationships with her foster father, Hans Hubermann; Max Vandenburg, the illicit Jew in her basement; and her neighbours. In the novel The Book Thief by Markus Zusak there is much more relationship development compared to the film The Book Thief directed by Brian Percival.
