An Analysis of Gender Roles in Disney Princess Films

...An Analysis of Gender Roles in Disney Princess Films Jasmit Singh 213749361 Traditional and Popular Culture – 1900 9.0 Susan Niazi – Tutorial 6 Whether it’s the colours they wear, the activities they engage in or how they behave, men and women are known to play different roles in society. These established gender roles “are not innate or natural but a product of society”. Children, adolescents and adults all learn gender roles through the environment they’re surrendered by. One of the many huge influencers that help shape gender roles is media. Although “there has been a lot of change over the years in terms of what is considered appropriate societal roles for men and women, this change is not reflected in contemporary film”. The ideology of mainstream media continues to focus on the males being the heads of society, which in result, shows an unequal representation of the females. From an early age, media puts an image into young minds, informing them how males and females should think, act, behave and appear. In many television shows and films, one can easily see the distinct difference between the role of a male and a female. Often films are enforcing stereotypical gender roles where the male is seen to holds more importance in society than the female. Amongst many film producing companies, Walt Disney Pictures for decades have been enforcing stereotypical gender roles in their princess films. Though it may not be outright obvious, Disney productions play a huge role...

The Internet: an Unrestrained Accomplice in Unlawful Search and Seizure

...The Internet: An Unrestrained Accomplice in Unlawful Search and Seizure Word Count: 3,205 How would you feel if someone that had never met you and had never seen your face was able to tell you that your favorite movies were “50 First Dates, 10 Things I Hate About You, and The Princess Bride,” and that you “browse entertainment news and like to take quizzes” (Angwin, 2010). Would you feel your privacy had been sbreached because someone must have spied on you without your knowledge? That is what happened to Ashley Hayes-Beaty. “Miss Hayes-Beaty is being monitored by Lotame Solutions Inc., a New York company that uses sophisticated software called ‘beacon’ to capture what people are typing on a website” (Angwin, 2010). According to PCWorld Magazine (Sullivan, 2012), personal web habits are being tracked by companies such as Lotame Inc. and Facebook, advertisers, and corporations that “stalk” consumers on the web, and then sold to marketers and the government without web users being informed or aware of it. People like Ashley are suing data brokers that “sold consumer profiles to other companies without taking steps required under the U.S. Fair Credit Reporting Act to protect consumers” (Gross, 2012). Digital consumer monitoring is a breach of privacy that needs to be addressed. Personal data is being collected and sold without consumer consent, and the current regulatory environment is weak. As this issue becomes more prominent, a variety of solutions have been proposed, such...

...growing popularity of branding among jewellery consumers today. However, with all of Tiffany’s current success, some analysts worry that the company may be devaluing their luxury image with the introduction of lower cost products, as this contradicts their “exclusiveness”, which is part of their brand. In order for Tiffany to not dilute its luxury image with its attempts to make the blue box accessible to the lower end the company must focus on assuring customers that the quality of their products have not lessened even though the cost has.  This proposal discusses the fine jewellery sector within the luxury goods industry, focusing on Tiffany & Co.’s (“Tiffany”) position among its strongest competitors and fine jewellery consumers. The paper opens with an overview of the specialty retail industry and current trends within the specific sector of fine jewellery. The document progresses by describing the corporate structure of Tiffany, specifically the company’s products, financial situation, store operations and plans for expansion, key publics, brand image,...

Alzheimer's Disease

...Alzheimer's (also known as younger-onset), which often appears when someone is in their 40s or 50s. * Alzheimer's worsens over time. Alzheimer's is a progressive disease, where dementia symptoms gradually worsen over a number of years. In its early stages, memory loss is mild, but with late-stage Alzheimer's, individuals lose the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environment. Alzheimer's is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Those with Alzheimer's live an average of eight years after their symptoms become noticeable to others, but survival can range from four to 20 years, depending on age and other health conditions.  * Alzheimer's has no current cure, but treatments for symptoms are available and research continues. Although current Alzheimer's treatments cannot stop Alzheimer's from progressing, they can temporarily slow the worsening of dementia symptoms and improve quality of life for those with Alzheimer's and their caregivers. Today, there is a...

The Life

...The Hunger Games: Action-film feminism is catching fire  Lisa Schwarzbaum Burning up Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen is both strong and vulnerable – a new kind of action heroine who has powered The Hunger Games: Catching fire to a $158m US debut. (Lionsgate) Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen is a new type of female action film icon, and moviegoers should be very excited about that, writes Lisa Schwarzbaum. As Catching Fire ignites on movie screens around the world, this is what we know about the 21st Century heroine called Katniss Everdeen: she is strong but also soft. She is brave but she has doubts. She is a phenomenal fictional creation, yet is real enough that moviegoers can draw inspiration from her values, her resourcefulness, and her very human inner conflicts. And she is played by Jennifer Lawrence, who appears not only to be handling her current duties as Hollywood’s finest model of well-adjusted millennial female stardom but doing so with charm. Everdeen and Lawrence: golden girls both. Personified in Lawrence’s lithe movements and cool, focused gaze, Katniss is a brave, resourceful and independent-minded fighter; but she is also a troubled and vulnerably guilt-ridden human being. Nina Jacobson, the producer of the Hunger Games film franchise, puts it this way: “She is a singular heroine in that the burden of survival weighs on her. She has a ton of survivor’s guilt.  And she keeps surviving.” Girl on fire It is strange that behaving like a well-adjusted...

...Jodi Arias Articles These are some of the essays that I have written about the Jodi Arias trial. Many more to come. JODI ARIAS TRIAL: SECOND EXPERT WITNESS, ALYCE LAVIOLETTE UNDER SCRUTINY Alyce LaViolette is the second expert witness called by the defense in the Jodi Arias trial. Ms. LaViolette has a Masters degree and has worked since the 1970s in the field of domestic violence. She has been described by some as being a man hater. For instance, attorney and radio host Jenny Hutt, in her appearance on the Dr. Drew show, referred to Ms. LaViolette’s testimony in the following way: “I feel like she`s just a man hater…she`s clearly prejudicial, and she just reads that she doesn`t like men.” This criticism, valid or invalid, is also present in professional critiques, couched using terms such as “feminist perspective” and even extends to the personal reviews that can be found on Amazon.com. One reviewer, asked the question “did she ever meet a man who was not an abuser?” Obviously, the impression of Ms. LaViolette, as being a man hater, is legitimate in the minds of many people. She has left that impression with many readers and viewers of her work. This is not to say that Ms. LaViolette is a man hater, just because a number of people think her so. That would be unfair. It would be fair to say this. Her behavior, her writing, her court testimony, has left a significant number of people with the impression that she is a man hater. I don’t know if she is a man...

It is like a homework task that a good advertising/marketing/sales person would always carry out before (and after) implementing the said product's advertising/marketing strategy. By collecting data with the help of research methods, the researcher can manage to understand the consumer, what he wants, when he wants it, and how he wants it. Research methodologies, more or less, aim to reveal consumers’ different perceptions of the product, in large part about the way it is advertised. The researcher wants to know how effective the advertisement is on his listeners, where the strategy falls short, and where it can improve. Ultimately, it can be said that the most important task of advertising/marketing research is to increase the sales of the product. This requires a well developed...
