The Raven: Edgar Allan Poe

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore— While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
“’Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door— Only this and nothing more.”

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December;
And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor. Eagerly I wished the morrow;—vainly I had sought to borrow From my books surcease of sorrow—sorrow for the lost Lenore—
For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore— Nameless here for evermore.

And the silken, sad, uncertain rustling of each purple curtain
Thrilled me—filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before; So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating “’Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door—
Some late visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door;— This it is and nothing more.”

Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
“Sir,” said I, “or Madam, truly your forgiveness I implore; But the fact is I was napping, and so gently you came rapping, And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my chamber door,
That I scarce was sure I heard you”—here I opened wide the door;— Darkness there and nothing more.

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before; But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token, And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, “Lenore?”
This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, “Lenore!”— Merely this and nothing more.

Animal Farm: Moses the Raven Analysis

...This is an analysis based on Moses the raven from animal farm George Orwell. In this book he represents the role that religion played in the Russian revolution. The tame raven who spreads stories of Sugar candy Mountain, the paradise to which animals supposedly go when they die. Moses plays only a small role in Animal Farm, but Orwell uses him to explore how communism exploits religion as something with which to pacify the oppressed. When the pigs first begin talking up their ideas about Animalism, they have to "counteract the lies put about by Moses, the tame raven". Moses is the Joneses' favourite pet, a clever talker who tells the animals about a mysterious country called "Sugar candy Mountain." One day, he says, their labour and suffering will come to an end and they'll all live happily ever after on Sugar candy Mountain. During the Rebellion, Moses flies off after Mrs. Jones and disappears for years. But he returns after the Battle of the Windmill and starts spreading the myth of Sugar candy Mountain again. What's weird is that the pigs still insist that his stories are lies, but they "allowed him to remain on the farm, not working, with an allowance of a gill of beer a day". Orwell’s lexical use of the word “tame” describes Moses as solitary and secluded; but also as gentle and not afraid of people. He shows these characteristic as he was Mr Jones special pet. But when he becomes the pig’s special tactic he continues to spread his lies, his propaganda and his false sense...

Analyzing Edgar Allan Poe's Poem The Raven

...Ashley Davis Mrs. Gunulfsen October 30, 2015 “The Raven” is the poem I have chosen for my analysis that was constructed by Edgar Alllen Poe.It includes several stanzas of despair and depression, symbolized by the bird it was named for. It was first published in 1845 and was noted for its “supernatural atmosphere”. He writes of a talking bird, the black as ink raven, that pays a visit to a student mourning the loss of his lover, Lenore. As it sits on a bust above the student’s chamber door, the raven seems to interrogate the lover with its constant repeating of the word “Nevermore”. Edgar said that he wrote the poem with mostly logical and methodical intent in order to construct a story that would appeal to both critics and the public, as...

Bases of Power

...Journal of Social Issues, Vol. 49, No. 4 , 1993. pp. 227-251 The Bases of Power: Origins and Recent Developments Bertram H. Raven University of California, Los Angeles The history and background of the analysis of the basis of power is examined, beginning with its origins in the works of Kurt Lewin and his followers at the Research Center for Group Dynamics, particularly the early research by John R. P. French. The original French and Raven (1959) bases of power model posited six bases of power: reward, coercion, legitimate, expert, referent, and informational (or persuasion; Raven, 1965). Since then, as the result of considerable research, the model has gone through signiJicant developments. A more comprehensive model is presented here that reviews the following: various motivations of the influencing agent; an assessment of available power bases in terms of potential effectiveness, time perspective, personal preferences, values and norms; consideration of other strategies such as manipulation; utilization of various preparatory and stage-setting devices to strengthen olte’s power resources; implementation of the power strategies; assessment of effectiveness of influence attempt and its positive andl or negative aftereffects; use of various ameliorative devices; and review, reconsideration, and another round of influence strategies. The overall model is examined in terms of its applicability to various settings including hospital infection control, patient compliance...

Managing Financial Principles

...equity and (ii) loan financing for the current and future shareholders? Raven Construction PLC has Share Capital of £400,000 and total long-term debts of £800,000 giving it a debt to equity ratio of 2:1. Therefore, Raven Construction PLC is said to be Highly Geared as it currently has £2 of debt for every £1 of equity. This is calculated from the following equation: Long-term DebtCurrent Equity =Gearing Ratio i. Equity Financing – This is the process of raising capital through the sales of shares and refers to an ownership in Raven PLC. The purchase of shares is a simple way of introducing permanent capital into the company. The introduction of new shares will reduce the gearing ratio in Raven PLC and will give the company a greater amount of equity available to cover its long-term debts. ii. Loan Financing – This is a process of raising capital through the borrowing of equity from a third party that does not benefit from ownership of the company. The third party will loan an amount of cash over an agreed period and require payments, with interest, to be repaid over the life of the loan. This will give Raven PLC even more debt than equity. An increase in the amount of long-term debt will increase the gearing ratio further 2. Make clear recommendations to the company on how to finance their expansion? Raven Construction PLC now requires £1.2m for its current planned expansion. Raven may find it very difficult to borrow more money from the bank and will need...

Once Upon a Midnight Dreary, as I Pondered Ambiguity…

..."The Raven" is a beautifully written, yet dark narrative poem by the American writer Edgar Allan Poe. First published on January 29, 1845, it marks Poe’s opening the door into recognition. It tells of a talking raven's mysterious visit to a grieving lover, outlining the man's slow fall into madness. "The Raven" was first accredited to Poe in print in the New York Evening Mirror. Its publication made Poe widely popular in his lifetime, yet brought him no financial attainment. Soon reprinted, mocked, and illustrated—opinion is divided as to the poem's standing, but it nonetheless it remains one of the most famous poems ever written. The poem itself contains mystery, laid out by his style. His style, alludes mystery by the use of ambiguity. Not only is the theme itself extremely ambiguous, but this ambiguity is brought on by his use of diction—the words he chooses are ambiguous, and this hinders the straightforwardness of the theme, creating it to also be ambiguous. Some of the ambiguous vocabulary he uses are the words soul, angels, chamber, nevermore, and raven. The soul is defined as the spiritual part of a human being, regarded as immortal. The soul has multiple meanings, differing by cultures and perceptions. The soul can be denoted as the God within—the principle of life, feeling, thought, and action in humans. It can be symbolized as survival or eternity, as the soul is believed to survive death and be subject to happiness or misery in a life to come. Furthermore, the soul...

Poetry

...The poem, “The Raven” written by Edgar Allen Poe is a very exceptional poem with several poetic devices like Alliteration, Personification, Metaphor, Connotation, and Foreshadowing that all work together to create an effect based around several themes such as Sadness, love and depression. “The Raven” uses musical sounds and rhythmic pattern style of writing. To carry out this musical effect, Poe uses internal rhyme “Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December” (Raven: 7). He also uses end rhyme “Some late visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door/ This it is, and nothing more" Raven: 17-18) and a regular pattern of accented and unaccented syllables. This form of writing uses a stressed syllable then unstressed syllable, “Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary” (Raven: 1) indicated by the highlighted words. This type of meter is known as trochaic octameter. Edgar Allen Poe created a dark and gloomy atmosphere from the beginning all the way to the end of “The Raven”. The ways Poe orchestrates this setting is by using Alliteration “Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary” (Raven: 1) which represent the time of day the narrator is situated in and it also shows the feelings that is triggered by a long day or some other force. There are also certain words that were used that have many different meanings which is known as Connotation. Some of these are “Ponder” (Raven: 1) which brings the idea of struggling...

The Effect of French and Raven Power

...The Effect of French and Raven Power on knowledge Acquisition, Knowledge Creation and knowledge Sharing: An Empirical Investigation in Lebanese Organizations Dr. Silva Karkoulian, Lebanese American University, Beirut, Lebanon Miss Yasmina Osman, Lebanese American University, Beirut, Lebanon ABSTRACT It has been documented that not much is known about the kinds of French and Raven powers that foster the acquisition, creation and sharing of organizational knowledge. This study extends the French and Raven power literature to the Lebanese Organizations and provides an empirical evidence of knowledge acquisition, knowledge creation and knowledge sharing. Results from the regression analysis of this study show that expert power is positively and significantly associated with knowledge acquisition, knowledge creation and knowledge sharing. INTRODUCTION In the second half of the twentieth century, knowledge management proved to be a new managerial reform suited to the rapidly changing environment. Managers were encouraged to consider and treat their employee’s knowledge as a crucial source for the success of their organizations (Huseman and Goodman, 1999; Stewart, 1997; Sveiby, 1997). Many scholars have focused their attention on knowledge management. Grant (1996) argues that a source of organization’s competitive advantage is when organizations apply a great deal of effort to develop new knowledge and technology. This new knowledge and technology...

Byron

...She Walks In Beauty By: Lord Byron (George Gordon) She walks in beauty, like the night Of cloudless climes and starry skies; And all that’s best of dark and bright Meet in her aspect and her eyes; Thus mellowed to that tender light Which heaven to gaudy day denies. One shade the more, one ray the less, Had half impaired the nameless grace Which waves in every raven tress, Or softly lightens o’er her face; Where thoughts serenely sweet express, How pure, how dear their dwelling-place. And on that cheek, and o’er that brow, So soft, so calm, yet eloquent, The smiles that win, the tints that glow, But tell of days in goodness spent, A mind at peace with all below, A heart whose love is innocent! "She Walks in Beauty" is a poem written in 1814 by Lord Byron. One of Lord Byron’s most famous, it is a lyric poem that describes a woman of much beauty and elegance. TITLE: What’s Up With the Title? We usually refer to this poem simply by its first line, "She Walks in Beauty." But the first line does more than introduce the subject of the poem – a beautiful woman. The first line of the poem (and therefore the title) is an apparently conscious echo of the famous sonnet by William Shakespeare, "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day" (Sonnet 18). Except, of course, instead of comparing the beautiful woman to a "summer's day," Byron compares her to "night." So he's not just setting up a contrast between night and day, he's also setting up a contrast between himself...

Hunt, University of Newcastle [pic] [pic] [pic] Dan Rogers Roy Lomas Edward Hyde Ultra-Sonic Engineering Corp. was a highly successful British-American Enterprise headed by Dan Rogers. Rogers had graduated from M.I.T. in 1980 with a degree in engineering, majoring in aviation. In 1982 he received his MBA from London Business School and immediately went about raising venture capital to start his own company By 1985 Rogers presided over a profitable single-product enterprise; Ultra-Sonic's Jet Fighter planes had made him independently wealthy. In 1988 Rogers was contacted by Richard Robards, a fellow engineer from his college days at MIT. Richard was an aerospace scientist with the University of Hawaii, and had recently developed an esoteric engine after years of research, which he called the Silver Motor. At the same time, Ultra-Sonic's own research division had produced tantalizingly viable plans for a new product which it was suggested would be called the Gyro-Copter. After some discussion, both men realised that the Silver Motor would require considerable development if it were to be used in the Jet-Fighters, but its design features made it immediately viable as an important feature of the Gyro-Copter. At the beginning of 1989, Rogers initiated an important corporate restructuring in order to accommodate the development of the Gyro-Copter. He created two separate divisions which he designated...
