The Red Pony
The story The Red Pony by John Steinbeck is about a boy named Jody whom is given a pony by his father. Jody is very proud of his pony and takes great care of it like he is supposed to. One day he leaves his pony out in the coral because it is sunny and he is told that it isn’t going to rain that day. Jody then goes to school and it begins to rain after twelve and Jody begins to worry about his pony. After school he runs home and put his pony in the barn. The pony is black from being soaked from the rain Jody begins to dry him and rub his its legs. That night Jody covers the pony with blankets but in the morning Jody can tell that his pony is ill. As the days go on the pony only get worse and becomes very sick. One morning Jody wakes up in the barn and finds the door wide open and his pony nowhere in sight. Jody flows the pony’s tracks and finds him dead. A few weeks later an old man come to the farm and says that he is going to stay there because he was born there on the land. Jody’s father only lets the old man eat with his family and stay for the night. In the morning during breakfast time the family is told the old man had been seen riding off into the mountains on Jody’s father’s horse and that is the last anyone sees the old man. A few weeks after Jody’s father tell him that if he is willing to work for it then he will get one of the horses’ bread and the colt will be his. Jody agrees and takes good care of the pregnant horse until it is time for the colt to be born. When the horse is ready Billy the ranch hand says that there is something wrong and the horse cannot turn the colt. To save the colt Billy kills the horse and cuts it open to take out the colt. Once Billy takes out the colt and lays it in front of Jody and tells him to clean it but Jody just stands there in sock from all that he had just seen.
I like Jody’s character in the story because it reminds me a lot of myself when I was a kid. Especially because of how he listens to his parents and isn’t disrespectful to them he does everything that they ask of him. He also reminds me of myself because he is always asking a lot of questions because he curious. As a child I can remember always asking my parents any question that came up in my head. I also liked how the author portrays him with a sense of innocence in the story because how he cares for his pony and reacts by worrying about it when it is very ill.
I didn’t like how the pony and the other horse died in the story it was very sad. I also did not like how Jody’s father reacted after they found Jody killing the bird. Jody’s father said “Jody, the buzzard didn’t kill the pony. Don’t you know that?” (pg174) It was as if Jody’s father just expected him to get over his pony dying. I didn’t like how Jody’s father was so emotional cold towards Jody and doesn’t really understand how Jody feels.
I think that the universal idea of the story is that not everyone know best and that you cannot control what is going to happen because in the beginning Jody trusted Billy with his pony. Although in the end Billy did not know what was best for the pony because the pony ended up dying. Billy also did not what was going to happen with the pregnant horse when she was ready he did not know whether thing were going to go wrong but he told Jody everything would be fine. Throughout the story Jody’s mother also told him to trust Billy because he supposedly knew best but he didn’t but he did his best to keep his promise and get Jody the colt.

Red Pony

...The classic novel The Red Pony by John Steinbeck includes four stories about a young boy Jody Tiflin who lives on his father’s California ranch. Similar to Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, the story takes place in America in the early 20th century. Each of the novel’s small town setting provides a simple yet unique economy. Through the stories of Jody Tiflin and Janie Crawford, I have made some conclusions about their specific economy. I believe that the economies of The Red Pony and Their Eyes Were Watching God contain a relatively independent economy that features many dedicated and self-employed members of society. Through the short stories in The Red Pony, Jody learns the importance of being an independent rancher who can provide for himself and his family. Although Jody is only ten years old at the start of the first story, his father Carl Tiflin believes that the most important way to mature is through firsthand experience. Mr. Tiflin asks “If you could have another horse would you work for it…?” and states that “Billy says the best way for you to be a good hand with horses is to raise a colt” (60, Steinbeck). Billy, the only paid worker on the Tiflin ranch, adds “It is the only way” (60, Steinbeck). As an aspiring leader in the business world, I completely agree with the way Carl Tiflin is teaching his son. Just like in business, the only way to get a true grasp on becoming a rancher is to actually get firsthand experience. Through the knowledge...

...Davis Red Bull 11/1/2012 Executive Summary Red Bull makes a premium energy drink for students, drivers, clubbers, business people, and athletes around the world to revitalize their bodies and minds. Problem: Red Bull, the leader in the energy drink sector of the soft drinks market, has seen its market share drop from 75% in 1998 to 47% in 2005. For the first time in the young energy drink sector, competitors have developed a legitimate share of the market: Hansen Natural’s Monster with an18% share and Rock Star with a 16% share. What actions need to be taken in order for Red Bull to solidify its market leader position? Answer: Red Bull should create a line extension offering either a diet drink to appeal to the recent trend of health conscious consumers or a new flavor while also changing their price point to be more sensitive to the consumer. By doing this, it will allow Red Bull to fight its competition in a very similar fashion to how they began to lose their market share (competitive pricing and a variety of options). Rationale: Red Bull has the strongest brand awareness in the energy drink segment which provides instant credibility to any line extension they may come out with. Red Bull has the extensive distribution network to make sure the product reaches the consumer no matter where they are. Market trends are currently in Red Bull’s favor as they show the customer wants options; giving Red Bull the perfect opportunity to develop a new product. Red Bull has...

Toy aisles and clothing rails are packed with this shade, but is nothing but pink for girls harmful? How different it was in the early 1900s, when blue was for girls and pink for boys. Any colour so long as it's pink | The Women's Journal explained it thus: "That pink being a more decided and stronger colour, is more suitable for the boy, while blue, which is more delicate and dainty, is prettier for the girl." DressMaker magazine agreed. "The preferred colour to dress young boys in is pink. Mommy: A Short Story

...When the mother won the second game, Reyna was not totally persuaded. She accused her mother of cheating and concluded that they were tied. The mother explained to Reyna the reason why she lost because she was only focusing getting four checkers in their color in a row without stopping her opponent to make the same move. In the third game, Reyna dropped red checkers into their slots as fast as she could and announced herself as a winner. The mother tried to catch up so she could be a winner as well. When returning the magnetic wooden dress-up toy, Reyna picked up as many books as she could until her mother did not allow. They sat next to each other on the sofa. While Reyna was flipping the book’s pages, the mother read line after line. They quickly finished one book after another. Reading a book about Thanksgiving, the mother asked, “Do you have any in your family that you are thankful for?” Reyna replied, “Yeah, you.” The mother then asked, “Do you have any friend that you are thankful for?” After a pause, Reyna announced, “Michael.” While Reyna was listening to her mother’s voice, a father...

... In this situation, whichever communication A receives first will govern. Under the mailbox rule, performance is a means of acceptance. If A orders 1000 blue coathangers, and B ships them out, that shipment is considered to be a conveyance of acceptance of A’s offer to buy the coathangers. Defective performance is also an acceptance, unless accompanied by an explanation. For example, if A orders 1000 blue coathangers, and B mistakenly ships 1000 red coathangers, this is still an acceptance of the contract. However, if B ships the red coathangers with a note that they sent these because they had run out of blue coathangers, this is not an acceptance, but rather an accommodation, which is a form of counter-offer. With the advent of modern technology, the mailbox rule has been expanded to cover all technology by which commercial communication may reasonably be conducted, including by telephone, telegraph, fax and e-mail. However, if the offeree were to convey acceptance by commercially unreasonable means – by cross-country pony express, for example – the acceptance would not be effective until it had actually been received....

Leadership Essay

...My Personal Leadership and Development Plan Dan Grumbles LDR-510 Dorothy Cucinelli January 24, 2003 Abstract Executive Summary: Personal Leadership and Development Plans have several factors involved in them. To begin with, one needs to determine where the starting point is as well as all the various aspects involved with current position, location and associated responsibilities. After understanding and documenting these factors, a study of future plans is necessary. Capturing these future plans in a written form allows a person the opportunity to make comparative studies of both a positive and negative nature, which can be referred to as a B verses C. These lists of positive and negative results can then be used to determine future direction and the action plan developed and implemented to get you there. Once the plan is developed and implemented a system for monitoring progress and performance should be utilized to insure successful completion of the project or task. Pre-Planning: An example of this activity would be my decision to return to school for my Masters Degree. I am fortunate enough to work for an employer who reimburses the costs associated with tuition, books, supplies and fees related to a degree in a field of study which applies to my current work assignment. While this is a very positive motivation by itself, there are many factors that must first be considered. ...
