The Relationship between Critical Thinking and Ethics

Critical thinking is more than just hard thinking. The ability to ask questions that produce a deeper level of thinking is part of the critical thinking processes. There are many steps to achieve true critical thinking skills. Some many not think ethics and critical thinking are related; but to explain the relationship between the two a definition of critical thinking, a description of the critical thinking steps, an explanation and benefits of how to use critical thinking to solve problems, and an explanation of how ethics apply in the professional and societal world is needed. The definition of critical thinking is the ability to make logical judgments that are well thought out. Sounds simple enough but that process can be hard. According to Ellis (2015) there are 6 levels of critical thinking. The first level is remembering: being able to recall terms, facts or events is produced at this level. The second level is understanding; at this level facts can be explained to others. Third level is applying; the ability to produce results from facts occurs at this level. The forth level is analyzing, fifth level is evaluating; at these levels facts can be divided into parts and rated. Once that information is rated an explanation on why that rating was given can occur. The sixth and final level is creating; at this level creating something new based off the old information can be done. By following all these steps and thinking at these levels decisions can be made ethically and efficiently. Using critical thinking can open up a whole new way to solve problems. The ability to think fast and effectively is a skill that is greatly needed at school, work,...

...The Relationship between Critical Thinking and Ethics Amber Williamson GEN 201 November 23, 2015 Tina Bernard The Relationship between Critical Thinking and Ethics Critical thinking and ethics play a significant role within each other's decision process. They both use each other’s steps and processes to obtain a desired result. Throughout this paper, you will understand what critical thinking and ethics are and the relationship between the two. Critical Thinking Critical thinking is the ability to think rationally about a subject or material. Your brain uses a process to dissect the information into sections, then reconstruct the pieces into new connections. Using critical thinking allows a person to come up with something different based on the original idea that could open new relationships with other ideas. ‘Critical thinking is made up of a process that includes six levels’ (Ellis, 2011, para. page 2). The first level is remembering. In this level, a person focuses on whether or not they can recall important facts about the idea. Examples may be key terms or certain events. The second level is understanding. The big question here is, do I know what the idea is? Can I summarize and put the idea into my words? Level three is applying. In this level, a person needs to be able to take the idea and use it to get the results that they are looking for. On level four it is time to analyze the idea. ...The Relationship Between Critical Thinking and Ethics Korey Hunter GEN/201 5/19/2015 Daisy Fromkin The Relationship Between Critical Thinking and Ethics Critical thinking, according to Dictionary.com (2015), is defined as, “disciplined thinking that is clear, rationed, open-minded, and informed by evidence.” (“Critical Thinking,” 2015.) Critical thinking is very similar to ethics since both are used in judgment, observing, and problem-solving. From a very early age to the end of time, we are constantly thinking, using both ethics and critical thinking, sometimes on purpose and others without noticing. There are six steps in the critical thinking process. The first step is having knowledge of the topic at hand. After gaining knowledge, understanding the topic is next. You want to be able to explain the subject to someone. Next you are going to apply the information you have gathered about a situation. Analysis, which is the step after application, is the breakdown of all information involved. To synthesize is the fifth step. You want to ask questions to form new ideas. The final step, evaluation, is "developing opinions, judgments, or decisions." ("Realitista, N.D.) Personally I believe having strong ethics and morals will help me succeed in life. ...The Relationship between Critical Thinking and Ethics Cheryl B. Green Gen/201 December 7, 2015 Portia Dennis Introduction Critical Thinking According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, critical thinking is the act of using your mind to produce ideas or careful judgements. If we use this definition anytime we are producing ideas or judgements we are utilizing critical thinking. When using critical thinking we are mentally going through steps in our head to achieve our desired outcomes. The skills we use for critical thinking are observation, interpretation, analyzing, inference, evaluation, explanation and metacognition(Boyd, p85). My daughter is turning 5 in two weeks but she has been a very willful child since she could speak.  We wake for school every day at the same time, and I observe her mood from the time she opens her eyes. I watch to see if she has gotten enough sleep, if she is grumpy or if she hops straight out of bed. The wheels in my head begin turning and I have to interpret her language into mine so that I don't miss any of the clues she is sending me.  Once I have figured out her mood I need to analyze how I'm going to handle her.  Her moods are very tricky. I suggest a particular outfit for her to wear.  Most days she doesn't like what I pick out for her to wear because she feels that she is old enough to make her own decisions when it comes to wardrobe. Usually, she picks what I have laid out for her and throws it on the floor.  Now we move into......

Relationship Between Critical Thinking and Ethics

...Critical thinking and ethics go hand in hand; like ying and yang. Critical thinking is the process in which you evaluate to make a clear and rational decision. Ethics is moral values that determine a person's behavior. Critical thinking creates a intellectual process of assessment which helps to determine their ethical values. There are six paths of critical thinking. Step one is remembering. The fundamental level of securing of information obliges that you have the capacity to distinguish what is being said: the theme, the issue, the proposition, and the primary focuses. Step two is understanding. In understanding, you make the new information that you have obtained your own particular by relating it to what you know. The better you are included with the data, the better you will grasp it. As usual, the essential test of whether you have fathomed something is whether you can put what you have examined or heard into your own words. Step three is applying. Applying requires that you realize what you have read, seen or heard, that you grasp it, and that you do some assignment to apply what you have learned to a real circumstance. Step four is analyzing. Analyzing includes breaking what you read or hear into parts, with a specific end goal to make clear how the thoughts are related, or associated with different ideas. Step five is evaluating. Describe the Relationship Between Critical Thinking and Ethics

...Describe the Relationship Between Critical Thinking and Ethics Eric Gregg Gen/201 2-2-16 HARRY LOWE Describe the Relationship Between Critical Thinking and Ethics Ethics is a term that we use to define what is right and what is wrong when people conduct their day-to-day lives. Combing critical thinking with ethics creates a process of evaluation, which, over time can help a person determine their own ethical standards. Critical thinking as defined in the dictionary is stated as “The objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in order to form a judgment”. One noticeable sentence fragment in that definition would be “Objective analysis and evaluation”. Objective analysis means you need facts or proof and not feelings or opinions to help you come to a conclusion. After you come to that conclusion you need to evaluate your analysis to determine if in fact your conclusion is correct to make the right judgment call. Critical thinking is a process that can be broken down into 6 steps: 1. KNOWLEDGE- this is the most important issue for obvious reason. 2. COMPREHENSION- understanding the material that has been presented to you and being able to explain it. 3. APPLICATION- using what you know of the material and being able to use it or apply it. 4. ANALYSIS- taking what’s been presented to you and breaking it down in order to be more clear and understanding of the form and content. 5. SYNTHESIS- taking what you analyzed and......

The Relationship Between Critical Thinking and Ethics Essay

...The Relationship between Critical Thinking and Ethics GEN/201 July 27, 2014 The Relationship between Critical Thinking and EthicsCritical thinking is when exercising or involving careful judgment or judicious evaluation. (Version 3.0.3)  This means you take all the facts to narrow down the decisions of a situation or problem. In critical thinking there are six types of thinking, as described by psychologist Benjamin Bloom. They are remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating and creating. (Ellis, 2015, p. 205) The process in which to use the six types of thinking is a three-step process of checking your attitude, checking for logic and checking the evidence. (Ellis, 2015, p. 205) This process will help you move through the six levels with more ease. Checking your attitude helps you in keeping an open mind and also being open to others point of views. While checking for logic, it can help you see assertions and assumptions in most situations. Checking for evidence requires you to find proof. To find the proof you must ask more in-depth questions, look in books and check other sources to find the evidence. According to my Ethical Lens Inventory Report my preferred lens are rights-responsibility and results lens. This means I balance reasoning and intuition to determine how to full fill my duties while achieving the greatest good for each individual.  My blind spot is that I believe that my motive justifies method or that my own good is good enough.......

...Critical Thinking and Ethics Jeffrey Lasack ETH 316 July 17, 2014 Michael Golojuch Critical Thinking and Ethics With many different potential situations to be faced in our lives, we are faced with tough decisions that we sometimes fight with inside as to what decision we should make. Some people are very logical and use this in the form of critical thinking to make the best decisions. Others simply follow the ethics that they are equipped with to make decisions and in turn do not use critical thinking to solve their problems or decisions. A better approach would be to use both ethics and critical thinking to come up with solutions that are logical and ethical in various situations. There are times when decisions cannot be made easily by following ethical guidelines. Two similar situations could be deemed ethical in one way but unethical in another context. According to Conjecture Corporation (2014), “Location and culture of the people involved also play a very important role in the determination of the exact ethical consideration to apply to a situation, a process that can be greatly enhanced by the application of critical thinking” (para. 2). Because ethical practices are not universal considerations are drawn between ethics and critical thinking. A link between ethics and critical thinking could be when an individual’s ethical concepts are not the same as an organization’s ethical concepts (Conjecture Corporation, 2014). Critical thinking plays a large role in...

Critical Thinking Scenario

...Critical Thinking and Ethics Josh Hergatt ETH/316 The relationship between critical thinking and ethics is sometimes strong, and sometimes weak. The principles and rules of critical thinking are certainly applicable to ethical reasoning. There will always be a need for ethical decision making in order to be fair to everyone and to not be bias towards anyone for their religion, sex, race, etc. Critical thinking can certainly be used for ethical reasoning. Ethics is defined as the reasoned study of what is morally right and wrong or good and bad. Critical thinking is the active and systematic process of communication, problem solving, evaluation, analysis, synthesis, and reflection, both individually and in community, to foster understanding, support sound decision making, and guide action. With these two defined, critical thinking and ethics should come hand in hand. In ethical reasoning, the principles of communication, analysis, evaluation, and problem solving from critical thinking should be used. The problem with this is that there are people that let their emotions get the best of them while reasoning. Some may not have the patience to resolve an issue, which causes the relationship between critical thinking and ethics to be weak. If everyone in society followed the rules and guidelines and logic, there would still be a need for ethical decision making. Treating everyone fair should be the biggest aspect of our......
