The Right Stuff
No two people are the same. Everyone has their own dreams and aspirations, strengths and weaknesses, fears and dreams. What can motivate one person may not appeal to the next, and vice versa. Imagine coaching a high school basketball team. Each member has a position and is responsible for certain tasks, like setting up the offense, rebounding, setting picks, etc. To get the team to practice and play hard, and to execute the game plan, the coach has to motivate the team. Although they may all have the same goal of winning, their motivation can be as varied as the personalities. Some of the players may be playing to attract college scouts in order to earn scholarships for college, others may be motivated by the prestige or popularity that being on the team brings, or they simply love the sport and want to play it as much as they can. Whatever the motivation, the coach has to be aware of each player and what drives them to keep them motivated to put forth their best effort on the court. This awareness of his players will determine the type of game plan the coach implements, using his team’s strengths to the fullest. Not all coaches utilize the same methods to motivate their players. For example, when Phil Jackson was an NBA coach, he was called “The Zen Master” because he uses a cerebral approach to coaching. He relied on his relationship with the players and motivated them in more subtle ways. Rarely would you see him yelling at the players and officials or paced the across the side of the court during games. His style works on players that are more established and mature in their development and do not need a directive approach to coaching. Jackson’s style may not be as effective on a team comprised mostly of rookies or younger players that are still trying to figure out how to play in the NBA. Now imagine a coach with Bobby Knight’s...

The Right Stuff

...Writing 8 July 2007 Exactly What is the Right Stuff? When people ask what is needed to accomplish an impossible task, or achieve a goal that seems outside the grasp of human power, it is often said that the person who achieves that feat has “The Right Stuff.” This is not some item you can pick up in a store, or that is taught at an Ivy League college. “The Right Stuff” is the intestinal fortitude required to drive on and persevere far after it is said it is no possible. Since the dawn of time it has been wondered if it takes a person of almost god-like proportions to achieve impossible feats, or someone just crazy enough to try. I most cases this is really nothing more that a person with such drive and desire to prove their point they are willing to risk everything including their lives to make something happen. To properly categorize this concept of “The Right Stuff”, we must look at what has been done in its name. Weather it be BG Chuck Yeager breaking the sound barrier in the Bell X-1, or the pioneers of the space program in the Mercury and Apollo space programs; one thing holds true they indeed has something that others did not, guts. When the word guts are used it is usually compared to a skateboarder or freestyle motocross rider doing something crazy and dangerous. This while brave and daring is nothing in comparison to the risk involved in the early space programs. People who in fact have this thing we call “The Right Stuff” are easily categorized and......

The Right Stuff

...The Right Stuff Many careers require a special type of person to perform. Other careers require not just for a special person, but a person that can go above and beyond what are considered the normal standards just to not get left behind. This beyond special type of person is considered to have the right stuff. The right stuff is a difficult term to categorize. The right stuff can be physical or it can be mental or it can be anything in between. To be part of the elite some of the qualities of a person that has the right stuff are physical fitness, mental attitude and high ethics. There is no doubt however; to be part of the elite one must have the right stuff. In the military, especially in the special operation forces, physical fitness is not just something you can work up to. Physical fitness in the sense of physical talent is necessary. Having the ability to swim ten thousand meters is something which can be worked up to but being able to swim ten thousand meters while being timed is a different story. Physical fitness is important; being left behind is not an option. Being left behind in the arena of Special Forces can mean certain death to the individual that does not have the right stuff. Hand in hand with physical fitness is mental attitude. Without the proper mental attitude the proper level of physical fitness cannot be met. To be elite the individual most have the heart to run that extra mile, swimming that extra lap and lift that extra pound. Good mental......

Book Report

...The story is more about the space race than space exploration in general. The Soviet Union's early space efforts are mentioned only as background, focusing entirely on an early portion of the U.S. space program. Only Project Mercury, the first operational manned space-flight program, is covered. The Mercury Seven were Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard, and Deke Slayton. Emphasis is given to the personal stories of the astronauts and their wives rather than the technical aspects of space travel and the flights themselves. The storyline also involves the political reasons for putting people into space, asserting that the Mercury astronauts were actually a burden to the program and were only sent up for promotional reasons. Reasons for including living beings in spacecraft are barely touched upon, but the first option considered was to use a chimpanzee (and, indeed, chimpanzees were sent up first). Another option considered were athletes already accustomed to physical stress, such as circus trapeze artists. Wolfe states that President Dwight D. Eisenhower, however, insisted on pilots, even though the first crew members would not actually fly the spacecraft. When Gus Grissom lands at sea and exits his space capsule, saving the capsule seems more important to the recovery team than saving the pilot because of the value of the data. Wolfe contrasts the Seven with the Edwards test pilots, among whom was Chuck Yeager, who was shut...

Moving to a Different Country

...can be fun and exciting adventure but it takes a lot of work and planning. Before you go and experience the new culture make sure you do research on the country. Another is to make sure you have the right paper work and documentation. The last step is to make sure you pack up essentials. It sounds like a lot and hard work but in the end it is all worth it. Doing research about the country you will live in is very important because you will be informed about the cultures and customs of the country. Also researching what cities are safe to live in and what cities are dangerous is good way of keeping yourself safe and out of trouble. Make sure to research living situations is it mostly apartment/condo living or is it houses? Knowing that information is good for when you are packing because you will know how much space you will have. A good way of research is finding a group on a social media website and asking them questions about the country and living situations. This step will be the most important step out of all three. Having the right paperwork and documentation is very important or you can get in serious trouble and or road blocks along the way. Making sure you know what you need is important. For example if you do not already have a passport make sure you apply for one right away because it can take a while to receive it. Next if you plan on working you must apply for a work visa in order to be able to get a job and work legally. Make sure to know if the country......

Do people really think we'll all turn into eco-friendly hells angels riding mopeds? .... Right... I'm glad someone finally asked me my thoughts about global warming! Personally, especially this time of year I think the heat could be turned up a little bit more! I have a hard time believing it is the "most urgent possible disaster that could hit us" any time soon and that we need to give our full attention to it. I watched all about it on History channel this last weekend and even the clips and photo's that they show do not convince me that it is the #1 concern that society and the world should have. ...discretion." It's cool these days to be ignorant. You see it everywhere. People talking, writing, acting without knowledge and with no desire to get knowledge. They want to "make" their own culture, their own language, their own sense. I think it's probably a consequence of evolution (as Dr. Henry Morris predicted). If the physical world is evolving (and there is nothing there that is solidified in essence), then it follows that the social world is evolving, leaving us with the quagmire of no right or wrong, nothing that is fixed outside of us. Everything around us is what we want to perceive, what we want to make of it. On the surface, I think that many Christians might reject that . . . at first. But as I talk to people on the Internet, with those who call themselves believers, I find that many believe that it is okay to have behaviors, standards that are different from one another, not because each is in a different place of spiritual maturity, but because we cannot tell each other what is right or wrong. And so I see many people doing things that they obviously shouldn't be doing. Oh, I not talking about whether or not they attend a certain church or are complementarian or egalitarian. I'm talking about Christians who are participating in affairs or who have had multiple marriages without considering the causes (and effects) or who regularly steal (from the US government, from their employers, from their neighbors) without giving it a second thought. Various studies......

'Boven Roc Rally 2011 – an Organizers Perspective.

...Let me simply start off by saying that the Roc Rally this year had little chance of happening. After putting in all we had in 2010, topped off with a massive party, the aftermath hit us like a bad hangover and we simply said: “Never again”. We looked at the calendar and realised that the tenth Roc Rally anniversary was looming. What is so amazing about a decade anyway, or a 21st? Maybe just a good excuse to do something wild or to go even bigger than ever? We definitely had it in the back of our minds that our big ideas to pull off something really special need to be reserved for a bumper 2012. Then what was left for this year? Just us staring high up against a feint crack system through a massive overhang with not a whole lot of psyche! The weeks leading up to the Rally one has to say, is often slightly stressful for us. There are logistical nightmares of getting people, food and music to the sleepy railway town of Waterval Boven on the edge of the Mpumalanga escarpment. Without going into the boring details of the comedies of errors that struck on the last hour, you know things are not going to plan when the tick list starts growing onto the next page instead of slowly diminishing as the master plan is supposed to unfold. Why on earth did I ever utter the thought: “Hey, let's pull a generator across the top of Baboon Buttress, light up the crags below and have some night climbing on the Friday!”? By mid Friday afternoon nothing more could go wrong. Some friends and......

Don't Sweat the Small Stuff

...Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff Abstract This book report is about Richard Carlson’s book, “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff…and it’s All Small Stuff”. The book explores how small the small things can cause stress to people, and gives advice on how to combat those small things. Carlson (1997) describes different ways to calm down during the hectic, day-to-day life, and how to remove stress by changing your perspective about things. Carlson offers 100 different sections of advice, organized in chapter formats. Carlson teaches the reader to look at life another way and gives relevant examples on how to do this to eliminate daily stress. Carlson gives such advice as to “live in the present moment” and “to make peace with imperfection”, among other stress reliving advice. Carlson’s main objective is to shift the reader’s paradigm on what is really important in the day-to-day life and how changing your thinking can greatly impact your life. The book “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff…and it’s all Small Stuff” by Richard Carlson was a very profound book to read. It was both eye-opening, and an effective reminder that negative or bad things that happen to us can’t always be taken too seriously. We go about our lives and react to things, treating things as a constant emergency and don’t stop to think what that reaction may cause. This is the biggest point that Carlson tries to makes in the book, in that how we relate to our......

Like matured enough to take things seriously. Growing up must be really hitting me. Maturity is spreading through all of me. They said, highschool life is really important and memorable. It is true, but sometimes it is hard to handle things in highschool life. Like having the same sched, doing some hard projects and handling teenager’s stuff like love. I am young but thinking like adult. They called it Young-adult stage. This is the stage where I’m in now. Handling studies and that teenager’s stuff, was not that hard. You’d just know when or how to deal with these things. You could have a relationship which has a priority of taking the studies seriously and having a bit time for each other. These will work out well if you pray for God’s guidance and wisdom. Never thought I would be this good at English. I’m amazed at myself right now ‘cause I know that I am improving in my English skills and that’s a good thing because my parents want me to have a good English skills so that I could cope up with the Australian people when we...

Structure Analysis on How to Tell a True War Story

...war. Instead, his approach is one of repetition, where he retells the death of Curt Lemon, but with different versions. He adopts this structure to make it more tolerable to his audience, express that true war stories never seem to have an end, and demonstrate how truths become contradictory. True war stories by nature are so gruesome and devastating, that the author has to compromise its accuracy by inserting nonfactual, yet more palatable details to cause his listener to believe. The author supports this point when he says, “All you can do is tell it one more time, patiently, adding and subtracting, making up a few things to get to the real truth” (296). In another section he says, “Often the crazy stuff is true and the normal stuff isn’t because the normal stuff is necessary to make you believe the truly incredible craziness” (289). Interestingly, O’Brien reinforces this idea again with the example of the story that Mitchell Sanders tells. Sander says to him, “I got a confession to make… last night, man, I had to make up a few things… yeah, but listen, it’s still true…those six guys, they heard wicked sound out there…they heard sound you just plain won’t believe.” In those examples, we clearly observed how the author uses his peculiar structure to reveal the necessity to season war stories to transform them from their raw and dreadful state, for the sake of his hearers. Once again we see that due to the horrendous contents of war, O’Brien organizes his story...

It includes a right to command a situation, commit resources, give orders and expect them to be obeyed, it is always accompanied by an equal responsibility for one's actions or a failure to act. Financial rewards is to motivate employees by giving them money either from a bonus or high wage or salary. 2) The benefits of having motivated employees in your business is that the employees will work harder because of what motivational thing you give them. One would be a money reward which makes the employee feel like they are needed in the company because you are giving them a bonus which leads to them working harder. Another benefit of having motivated staff is that they believe that the job is theirs and no one else’s because it makes them feel like the company is doing it for them which makes them feel better and they are more likely to work harder. Another benefit of having motivated staff is that they are more likely to produce more products because motivating them makes them want to do well and do it quickly which produces more money for the company. 3) Motivation is when you engorge or make them feel wanted by giving them things to do that. Amil might have used the wrong motivational technique for his staff because he gave money to them when they are doing a bad job. For example you wouldn’t give money to a plumber if he didn’t fix your burst water pipe so why would Amil give extra money......
