The Road to Becoming a Pediatrician Many college students really don’t know what career path they want to follow when they go to college. However, every since I was a little girl when I cheered someone up or help them during a sickness it felt like I had a purpose in life. After researching a career medicine, one became interested in pursuing a career as a pediatrician because I love to help others and being around children. Becoming a pediatrician takes a lot of dedication and hard work. According to a HealthCare-Training Center, the job description for pediatricians includes a wide variety of tasks including medical history, ordering test, administering treatment, and explaining procedures (HealthCare-Training Center). Pediatricians communicate with nurses and other healthcare providers, and refer patients to medical specialists when necessary. They plan and apply healthcare programs, as well as prepare reports for organizations. They treat new born and patients up to the age of twenty-one years old. Pediatricians are concerned with more than just physical well being of their patients. They are also involved with prevention, early detection, and management of other problems that affect children and adolescents like social stresses or depression. As a pediatrician one will constantly learn new and exciting things and it all starts with earning a high school diploma, then getting accepted into a four-year institution of their choice. I am currently attending East Georgia College and later plan transfer to Georgia Southern to earn my Bachelor’s degree in Biology. Most students want to be a doctor takes a “Pre-med” curriculum, which includes some basic science and math courses. Those desiring a career in medicine should volunteer in any medical related fields during their four-years of college because it shows the medical schools your interest in medicine

...relationship to develop so strongly. The long hours of phone conversations we shared together taught me a lot about you and your intentions. In spite of all our disagreements and petty fights, we seldom held grudges against each other and managed to find ways to forgive each other and it amazes me that we are still going on strong. Our shared experiences have surely guided me into becoming a better and stronger person. Being the main motivation in my life, helping me become a better basketball player, as well as keeping me away from the negative influences in my life are few of the many reasons as to why I treasure your presence in my life. Motivation, the most important aspect in what many individuals need in their lives, the one feature I lack absolutely none of because you are in my life. You never fail in finding ways to motivate me in my academic work. For example, you make sure that I complete all my homework assignments before I even think about touching an Xbox controller and only you know how addicted I have become to playing Call of Duty. More importantly, I have always wanted to become a pediatrician and if there is one person that supports this dream of mine the most, that person is undoubtedly you. I recall that time I felt like giving up on this dream because I felt it was unattainable, however, you were there to tell me that I was more than capable of this dream and if I pushed for it, then nothing or no one should hinder my way. Since...

Personal Narrative: What I Learned In High School

...It is Monday morning, and my heart is beating violently as if it is trying to break out of my chest. While I get around for school, my mind is swirling around everything that I have to accomplish this week. Three quizzes, two tests, and nightly homework assignments are the academic-related tasks. In addition, I have to practice the songs I am learning at piano lessons and the dances my classmates and me are learning at dance lessons. Right after school I have a SEE (Students Educating Equality) Club meeting, and on Wednesday I have a Key Club meeting. In between all of this I have to take care of my puppy and finish my chores. I may be a little overwhelmed right now, but I know that I am capable of getting everything done while still finding...

What Literacy Means to Alexie

...What does Literacy mean to Alexie? It all started out with a comic book; a superman comic book that opened up three year old Alexie’s eyes to success. Along with learning to read by himself by looking at comic books and trying to associate words with pictures came different struggles, his parent’s not being able to afford great books, spending his whole day trying to learn how to make the words become real to him, and of course the biggest struggle; his peers making fun of him for being smart. For Alexie to go through all of these struggles alone; learning to read and write must mean something more than just scanning through words on a page or writing the alphabet mixed up in different combinations, it must mean something much greater. The first thing that shows that Literacy means something more to Alexie is that it means being sufficiently educated with his writing and reading skills. Alexie’s wild adventure began with opening a comic book back when he was three years old. He had tried to associate the words and the pictures to try to teach him-self how to read. To this day, he cannot recall exactly what the comic book was, but he was indeed successful. After trying to read that comic book, Alexie wanted more, he didn’t want to learn how to read; in his mind, he had to. Alexie’s Father was an avid reader and I believe that Alexie got the idea to teach him-self to read because he wanted to be just like his father. The family was not rich; very far from it, but Alexie’s...

Genetic Disorders

...Tay-Sachs Disease Foreword: Before beginning to read this review of the case study, please note that current events of today pertain more to preconception screening for genetic anomalies and genetic studies. Today due to preconception genetic screening many parents opt to terminate a fetus with fatal or painful anomalies; therefore a large portion of the research for parents who are expecting a child with Tay Sachs Disease was noted to be during an approximate 30 year span from the mid-1950’s to the early-mid 1980’s, thus older citings will be noted. “Tay-Sachs parents say that their child dies three times—when the disease is diagnosed, when the child enters the hospital, and the final time.” (Atwater, 1964) “How do you parent without a net, without a future, knowing that you will lose your child, bit by torturous bit?” (Rapp, 2011) Will it be a boy or a girl? What color will the eyes, the hair be? Whose smile will the baby have? These are just a few of the many questions that begin when parents find out they have conceived a child, and most of the time the questions only grow as the pregnancy progresses too; what will they want to be when they grow up? Who will they look like? Will they be strong, graceful, independent, or determined? Should we look at preschools and colleges now? It may not seem to occur very often that parents will say to themselves; we never thought about how we might parent a child without a future. Now instead of questions that may focus on the...

Breast vs. Bottle

...Breast feeding Vs. Formula feeding Lyndie McPherson University of Phoenix COM/170 December 22, 2014 Winifred Donnelly Breast feeding Vs. Formula feeding When becoming a parent, there are many decisions that have to be made before the baby is even born. The most important decision is whether a mother will breastfeed or formula feed her baby. Breastfeeding should be the only option in feeding a baby unless there is a medical reason for why a mother cannot. When deciding on how she will feed her baby, a mother should know why formula is used rather than breast milk. She should know why breast milk is so much healthier, and she should be aware that there are several solutions that can solve any issues that may come up with breastfeeding. Women should know why formula is used rather than Formula Comfort and Lifestyle A woman should know why so many women never even consider breast milk as being an option for feeding their child. Many mothers choose formula over breast milk for reasons that have nothing to do with their baby. According to Kids Health from Nemours (1995-2014), their article Breast or Bottle, states “for many women their decision to breastfeed or formula feed is based on their comfort level, lifestyle and specific medical considerations that they might have. Many women do not breastfeed due to their comfort level and what people may think of them.”(para. Three sentence 2). Childhood Obesity

...ENG 122 April 26, 2012 Childhood Obesity Childhood obesity is an ongoing problem that we will all face in our lifetime. We may encounter this from our own experience as being an overweight child, seeing it in our children, their friends or even in our grandchildren. We all need to have a better understanding of childhood obesity. We will start this journey by address a brief history of childhood obesity, short and long-term health concerns, methods for treating obesity, and prevention of obesity in children. The overall purpose will be to foster an understanding of the impact high-fructose corn syrup usage in the last 30 years has had in relation to the childhood obesity epidemic. Childhood obesity is not a new problem but it is becoming an epidemic in the United States. Dr. Fals (2009) writes, “this country has been struggling with obesity for well over 20 years now” (p. 1). Most of us can remember when there was maybe one overweight child in a classroom, now there are two to three instead. The National Center for Health Statistics has been conducting surveys since 1963 relating to obesity among children and adolescents in the United States (Ogden, 2010). This is the only organization that has solid scientific history and statistical data available. It appears that obesity was not tracked on a nationwide level prior to 1963. One reason may be that there weren’t enough cases of childhood obesity to raise any red flags up until the 1960s. Since the National Center...

Video Games: an Innovative Approach to Education

...Hayes 1 Kimberly Hayes GLS 502-800 Ashley Hudson April 23, 2013 Video Games: An Innovative Approach to Education Ten years ago, I’d have scoffed if I heard video games and education used in the same sentence, and I know a lot of other parents who would still have a similar reaction. In more recent years, however, I’ve been forced to change my opinion, and the person who influenced the change the most is, of all people, my children’s pediatrician, Dr. Jim Poole, the founder of Growing Child Pediatrics in Wake Forest, N.C. Having two children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) isn’t easy in the educational environment present in schools today, and through Dr. Poole’s work with my children, I have come to understand that the reason for the difficulty is that traditional curriculums that teachers have to work with aren’t flexible enough to allow them to tailor to children with learning differences. So what does this have to do with video games? A LOT. Video games have the potential to break down educational barriers that exist in the traditional classroom by providing alternative learning approaches that cater to kids with ADHD and other learning differences, and by building cognitive skills that can help all children succeed in the classroom. When I first discovered that my oldest child might have ADHD from his eighth grade teachers, they all told me that he needed medication before entering high school. I didn’t like the idea of medicating my child, so I began...

Novadeci

...Case Study of the NOVADECI Health Care Program By Rosa C. Mercado and Ramon A. Certeza Introduction This case study focuses on the role of the Novaliches Development Cooperative (NOVADECI) in providing health care and medical services to its members. NOVADECI is a cooperative initiated by market vendors in 1976 in a bustling urban community. It started its operations in the town of Novaliches and has since then widened its scope of operation to include the areas of Caloocan and Quezon City, two highly urbanized and populous cities in the Philippines. Quezon City is home to many government and private offices, shopping malls and public markets, schools and universities and sprawling residential areas for both the rich and the poor. NOVADECI had a very rocky beginning, borne out of desperation and necessity for a small group of market vendors who were struggling to keep their businesses afloat in the face of changing market conditions, lack of support from or access to government and banking institutions and perennial dependence on usurious money lenders. Over the years they have realized that their margins-of-profit were being eaten away by the high interest rates they have to pay on loans. In 1976, a tipping point came when the slaughterhouse on which they were getting their meat supplies was ordered closed by the city government due to poor sanitation. A small group of 15 market vendors decided to close ranks and put their heads together. They poured out...

...THE TUCK SCHOOL AT DARTMOUTH MinuteClinic Bringing Change to Healthcare Delivery Peter Albro, Bill Aull, Ryan Fitzgerald, John Goldsmith, Tom Harris, Jon Mohraz 11/14/2008 Introduction In 1999, consumers of the US healthcare industry had a myriad of frustrations to choose from when seeking medical assistance: lack of convenience, no focus on customer service, limitations from insurance providers, billing inefficiency and confusion, and very opaque pricing. One grumbler, Steve Pontius, had an epiphany during an all too common experience when seeking medical coverage for his kids. After waiting for three hours at an urgent care clinic for what he thought was an ear infection, the physician diagnosed in three minutes what Pontius had predicted. Additionally, only after the visit to the doctor had he figured out that his insurance company did not cover treatment at this particular clinic, so Pontius would have to pay hundreds of dollars out of his own pocket to pay for the visit with the doctor.1 Sensing a business opportunity, Pontius, along with Rick Krieger and Douglas Smith, partnered to start MinuteClinic, the retail medical treatment clinic that is widely regarded as the beginning of the convenient care clinic (CCC) movement. Also known as retail based clinics, these facilities are small medical operations located within a larger retail operation such as Target or CVS. They offer a limited scope of medical services and are primarily characterized by...

Pregnancy Tips

...Week 1 Speak with your doctor about adding a prenatalmultivitamin to your morning routine. At least 400 micrograms of folic acid every day can help prevent certain birth defects that affect your baby's brain, heart, and spinal cord, especially if you take it before you conceive and in the early weeks of your pregnancy. See that your supplements contain added goodies like calcium, iron, and Vitamin B12 as well. Week 2 Right now, you're just dying to find out: Am I pregnant or not? Unfortunately, you'll need to stick it out a bit longer. About four days after your egg is fertilized, it begins producing a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), which pregnancy tests can detect in about another week -- first in your blood (via a test at your doctor's office) and then in your urine (which an at-home screening would spot). Week 3 Get yourself a good doctor -- pronto! Having a healthcare provider you like and trust is key. After all, this is the person who will guide you through your entire pregnancy, labor, and delivery, along with the millions of questions, tests, and emotional ups and downs along the way. If you don't currently have an ob-gyn you love, ask friends, family, and coworkers for recommendations or research practices until you find someone you feel comfortable with. And, hey, your choices are not limited to regular obstetricians. You might also want to investigate alternative or additional types of care -- including midwives or family physicians Week...
