'Accounting Standard's

...Principles (GAAP) In the U.S., Generally Accepted Accounting Principles are accounting rules used to prepare, present, and report financial statements for a wide variety of entities, including publicly traded and privately held companies, non-profit organizations, and governments. The term is usually confined to the United States; hence it is commonly abbreviated as US GAAP or simply GAAP. However, in the theoretical sense, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles encompass the entire industry of accounting, and not only the United States. Outside the academic context, GAAP means US GAAP. Similar too many other countries practicing under the common law system, the United States government does not directly set accounting standards, in the belief that the private sector has better knowledge and resources. US GAAP is not written in law, although the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) require that it be followed in financial reporting by publicly traded companies. Currently, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) is the highest authority in establishing generally accepted accounting principles for public and private companies, as well as non-profit entities. For local and state governments, GAAP is determined by the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), which operates under a set of assumptions, principles, and constraints, different from those of...

The stockholders objected to the merge and the idea was aborted. However, the damage had already been done. The investors had lost faith and Satyam’s stocks plunged to an unbelievable low. Ironically, the word Satyam means Truth in Sanskrit and as the world watched the truth about Raju started to unravel. ...always been subject to quite strict regulation. Thus there are detailed requirements in relation to company formation, corporate administration and corporate finance. Despite all this regulation a number of issues have continued to cause considerable unrest and political controversy. The main concerns have centred on the apparent lack of effective control of directors of public listed companies which have manifested themselves in perceived excessive remuneration packages and mismanagement leading to a number of high-profile corporate collapses. Public listed companies employ thousands of employees and are the recipients of billions of pounds in investment by individuals and institutional investors such as pension funds. It follows that all governments, in the UK, in Europe and throughout the world, consider it crucial that public confidence in such companies is maintained. The attempts to effectively control the remuneration of directors and the activities of directors in their management of public companies so as to avoid high profile scandals are known as corporate governance. It should be noted that corporate governance is not static, but rather develops to meet the urgent issues of the day. Thus, for example, the effect of corporate activities upon the environment now falls to be included within the ambit of corporate governance. What is Corporate Governance? The term “corporate governance” is not defined by legislation neither has it been defined by the courts...

...The Role of Accounting in the Financial Crisis: Lessons for the Future S.P. Kothari kothari@mit.edu 617-253-0994 and Rebecca Lester rlester@mit.edu MIT Sloan School of Management E60-382, 30 Memorial Drive Cambridge, MA 02421 December 14, 2011 ABSTRACT: The advent of the Great Recession in 2008 was the culmination of a perfect storm of lax regulation, a growing housing bubble, rising popularity of derivatives instruments, and questionable banking practices. In addition to these causes, management incentives, as well as certain US accounting standards, contributed to the financial crisis. We outline the significant effects of these incentive structures, and the role of fair value accounting standards during the crisis, and discuss implications and relevance of these rules to practitioners, standard-setters, and academics. This article is based on a presentation by Deputy Dean and Professor SP Kothari of the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, at Baruch College on October 25, 2010. 1    Electronic copy available at: http://ssrn.com/abstract=1972354 The Role of Accounting in the Financial Crisis: Lessons for the Future I. Introduction The Great Recession that started in 2008 has had significant effects on the US and global economy; estimates of the amount of US wealth lost are approximately $14 trillion (Luhby 2009). Various causes of the financial crisis have been cited, including lax regulation over mortgage lending,...

...Non-Performing Assets (NPA) - Meaning Non-Performing Assets are popularly known as NPA. Commercial Banksassets are of various types. All those assets which generate periodical income are called as Performing Assets (PA). While all those assets which do not generate periodical income are called asNon-Performing Assets (NPA). If the customers do not repay principal amount and interest for a certain period of time then such loans become non-performing assets (NPA). Thus non-performing assets are basically non-performing loans. In India, the time frame given for classifying the asset as NPA is 180 days as compared to 45 days to 90 days of international norms India and Non-Performing Assets In India, NPA were very high in the beginning of 90's. Over a period of time there is considerable decline in the NPA's of all banks. In the case of public sector banks, gross non-performing assets were 9.4% in 2002-03 and it declined to 7.8% in 2003-04. The net NPA during the same period declined from 4.5% to 3%. Types of NPA NPA have been divided or classified into following four types:- 1. Standard Assets : A standard asset is a performing asset. Standard assets generate continuous income and repayments as and when they fall due. Such assets carry a normal risk and are not NPA in the real sense. So, no special provisions are required for Standard Assets. 2. Sub-Standard Assets : All those assets (loans and advances) which are considered as non-performing for a period of 12...

Principles of Auditing

...Chapter 2 THE AUDIT MARKET Revision: 11 September 2012 2.1 Learning Objectives After studying this chapter, you should be able to: 1. Distinguish between different theories of audit services including agency theory. 2. Understand drivers for audit regulation. 3. Understand the role of public oversight. 4. Distinguish between different audit firms. 5. Identify some current developments in the audit market. 6. Portray the series of industry codes of conduct and guidance 2.2 Introduction The emergence of today’s auditors happened during the Industrial Revolution that started in Great Britain around 1780. This revolution led to the emergence of large industrial companies with complex bureaucratic structures and, gradually, the need to look for external funds in order to finance further expansion: the separation between capital provision and management. Both developments resulted in demand for the services of specialists in bookkeeping and in auditing internal and external financial representations. The institutionalization of the audit profession was then merely a matter of time. Management Controls Operations and Communications Management has control over the accounting systems and internal controls of the enterprises that auditors audit. Management is not only responsible for the financial and internal control reports to investors, but also has the authority to determine the precise nature of the representations that go into those reports. However, management...

...NGO Sector: The Way Out’ (TIB) 2007 is used here as an information source of finding out the flaws of existing management techniques. Finally the paper recommended implementation techniques of VBM in order to regain the image of the NGOs as a pioneer of social welfare in Bangladesh. Keywords: NGO, Transparency, Governance, Management, Strategies, Value Addition, Value Based Management etc. 1. Introduction Bangladesh has largely failed to assist the poor or reduce poverty because of limited resources and faulty planning, while Non Government Organizations (NGOs) have grown dramatically and ostensibly to fill up this gap. There are more and bigger NGOs here than in any other country of equivalent size. Bangladesh’s NGO sector is remarkable for the speed with which it grew to its present size and prominence (World Bank, 2005). It is difficult to find out the real number of NGOs operating in Bangladesh, because they are registered under different Government agencies as development partners. ADAB has a membership of 886 organizations of which 231 are central members and 655 are chapter members (as of December 1997). A survey held on...

Budget

...Budget: An estimate of income and expenditure for a set period of time. Budget (from french bougette) generally refers to a list of all planned expenses and revenues. A budget is an important concept in microeconomics, which uses a budget line to illustrate the trade-offs between two or more goods. In other terms, a budget is an organizational plan stated in monetary terms. The budget of a government is a summary or plan of the intended revenues and expenditures of that government. Budget Preparation A full understanding of the budget planning and preparation system is essential, not just to derive expenditure projections but to be able to advise policymakers on the feasibility and desirability of specific budget proposals, from a macroeconomic or microeconomic perspective. It is much easier to control government expenditures at the "upstream" point of budget preparation than later during the execution of the budget. Thus, fiscal economists and general budget advisors need to know: * what is the framework in which budget decisions are made; * who is responsible for planning and preparing the budget; * what are the basic steps; * what are the typical weaknesses in procedures and how can these be overcome; and * how can changes in budget plans be programmed and targeted? Answers to these questions are set out in the subsections below. Budget planning and preparation are (or should be) at the heart of good public expenditure management. To...

Bangladesh

...Country Reports on Local Government Systems: Bangladesh Bangladesh ________________________________________________ 1. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE COUNTRY 1.1 Socio-economic profile Bangladesh emerged as an independent nation state in 1971. Although a new state, Bangladesh is an old country with a long recorded history of several thousand years. In its recent past it was part of Pakistan (1947-1971) and was known as East Pakistan. Prior to this, different parts of present Bangladesh were under British India (1765-1947), the Mughals and other Muslim rulers, and before them under Buddhist and Hindu rule. Bangladesh lies in the northeastern part of South Asia. The country is bounded by India in the west, north, northeast and east, by Myanmar in the southeast and by the Bay of Bengal in the south. The area of the country is 147,570 square kilometers. Climatically, the country belongs to the humid tropics and is vulnerable to a number of natural hazards like cyclones, floods and riverbank erosion, which almost regularly displaces a large number of people. Bangladesh is predominantly a delta plain of one of the largest river systems of the world. Only a part in the southeastern area is hilly. In spite of the apparent physical homogeneity and small territorial size, Bangladesh shows regional variations in physical, infrastructural and socio-economic development. Since its independence, the development planners of Bangladesh have given consideration to the importance of regional...

...Solution Manual to accompany Accounting: Business Reporting for Decision Making 4e Jacqueline Birt, Keryn Chalmers, Suzanne Byrne, Albie Brooks & Judy Oliver Prepared by Jacqueline Birt John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd 2012 Chapter 1: Introduction to accounting Comprehension Questions 1.1 What is a business transaction and how does it relate to the accounting process? Illustrate the concept of a business transaction with five examples relating to a mobile phone distributor. A business transaction can be defined as external exchanges of resources between the entity and another entity or individual that affects the assets, liabilities and owners’ equity items in an entity. The accounting process is the identifying, measuring and communicating of economic information about an entity to a variety of users for decision-making purposes. The first component of the process is the identification of business transactions which are then measured and communicated to the different users of financial reports. Business transactions for a mobile phone distributor include the following: 1. The contribution of capital by the owner to commence the business. This transaction would increase cash (asset) and increase capital (equity). 2. The purchase of inventory (mobile phones) on credit. This transaction would increase inventory (asset) and increase creditor (liability). 3. The payment of office rent. This transaction would decrease cash (asset) and decrease...
