The Role Of Setting In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

On a literal level, Of Mice and Men is about two friends looking for work during the Great Depression; however, like most pieces of literature, this story delves much deeper than simply what is seen on the surface. Each setting serves as a major role in George and Lennie’s lives whether the place itself is real or imaginary. Steinbeck communicates Lennie’s true character by subtly comparing and associating him with multiple animals.
The description of the pool in the first paragraph of the novel symbolizes a sanctuary for George and Lennie, far away from any kind of society. The pool consists of “warm water” and “yellow sands,” best of all, there are no “scary things” for Lennie. In the beginning, this pool is a refuge, an escape when everything goes wrong. This is why George tells Lennie to meet him back there if anything were to happen like what happened in Weed. At the end of the novel, this sanctuary is where George makes everything right. This place of safety will be where Lennie goes to his own sanctuary. …show more content…
Although it is imaginary, the farm is very existent in the minds of George and Lennie. Whenever George needs to calm Lennie down, he speaks of the farm. It somewhat symbolizes the relationship between the two men. The farm is a place where George and Lennie can live independent of others. No burdens. This dream seems to transform into an actual goal when Candy offers to pay the down payment for it. Finally, they would have a place where they can both be happy and content. Conversely, just as the farm becomes within reach, sort of, George has to “make everything right” by killing Lennie. Ways in Which Steinbeck Makes Violence so Important in the Novel

...John Steinbeck’s novella “Of Mice and Men” was written the 1930s, during the great American Depression. He used the ranch as a microcosm to show society’s desensitisation to violence, the inhumane ways in which the marginalised were treated and the prevalent misogynistic attitudes. Steinbeck focused on lives of itinerant farmworkers who constantly searched for work. The economic crisis led to high unemployment rates and fierce competition for jobs. Many people were poverty stricken, violence became their ultimate source of escapism and a cheap source of entertainment thus creating a hostile environment. Steinbeck resigned from the prestigious Stanford University in order to gain insight of the hardships faced by peripatetic workers. His strong socialist views and empathy towards the marginalised inspired him to write this story. During his time on the farm, he witnessed a lot of violence. He based most of his characters on people he met; Lennie’s character was based on a man who killed a ranch foreman and stabbed his boss in the stomach with a pitchfork.
