The Book of Genesis has presented us with the story of creation and the destruction of Sodom. Usually with stories retold in the Bible there are deeper ramifications within the stories than what appears on the surface. particuarly with respect to the meaning and relationship between God and man. Usually all of the stories seem to place man in a subservient position to God, or at least mans will to Gods will.

The true meaning in life is to "obey the will of God, even when it goes against our own will" Just as we must develop our spiritual side to overcome our physical desires, but in order too, we must sublimate our own will to the will of God.In the Bible, Genesis6:3 we see that god has a superior power over man, we realize that man

Gay Marriage

...point in the future for gay and lesbian marriages? During Barack Obama's first election he was opposed to gay marriage. However, in an interview with ABC's Robin Roberts, Obama said "I've always been adamant that gay and lesbian Americans should be treated fairly and equally." Whether that has happened or not, the president has reconsidered his former position against gay marriage, which in turn may change the direction of this debate. As asked previously, where did the taboo of gay marriage or homosexuality stem from, in the old testament the first book in the Bible, Genesis 19: 1-13 speaks of homosexuality and how God destroyed the city because of the sin that was being committed. According to "Christian Bible Reference Site" (2000), "The wicked men of Sodom attempted a homosexual rape of two messengers from God who had come to visit Lot. As a result of this and other widespread wickedness, God destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah in a storm of fire and brimstone" (Old Testament). In addition, it is also mentioned in Leviticus 18:22 that "You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination". (NKJ), and it continues to say in a later chapter, "If a man lies with a male as he...

Bible, Christianity, And Homosexuality Analysis

...Cannon explores the origin of homosexuality in his book The Bible, Christianity, & Homosexuality. He writes that the term homosexual was not coined till about a hundred and fifty years ago (2011). In fact this term to identify homosexuals is a contemporary term. However, looking at the bible, Cannon found six biblical accounts that reference to homosexuality: Genesis 1-2, Genesis 19:1-9, Leviticus 18:22, 20:13, Romans 1:24-27, 1 Corinthians 6-9, and 1 Timothy 1:10 (2011). While there is several accounts that reference to homosexuality, the Sodom accounts in Genesis 19:1-9 plays a central role in the way we identify and react to homosexuality (2011). During this time, God sends two angels to warn Lot that he will destroy Sodom. Nonetheless, before this event, God intended on destroying Sodom (Cannon, 2011). However, the event in this is illustrated almost as rape (Cannon, 2011). The angels come to Lot’s house, and then crowds of people with men see the angels and try to enter into his house to have sex with the angels (Cannon, 2011). Lot tries to protect the angels, so he offers his virgin daughters, but the crowd is adamant about the angels (Cannon, 2011). Cannon...

Bible 104 Quiz 2 Tips

...Here are a few tips for Quiz 2: Know that a proper understanding of the OT Law begins with a proper understanding of its intent and purpose regarding its 'original recipients'. Consider a few items from the reading that Fee and Stuart clarify… Understand the role of the OT Law to the Christian. Pertaining to that, have a basic understanding of the Six Items from pp165-169. Know the details and distinctions between "apodictic" and "casuistic" law, that is, Apodictic laws are what must always be done in all situations by all people. Casuistic laws specify certain situations and certain people, not everyone in all the time. Read this section of the text carefully, however the quiz questions on this are practical and straight forward, so do not get bogged down. Understand the original purposes of the law as it related to being a benefit to Israel beginning on p. 177. In Harbin this week, understand the section on "The Relationships of Creation, pp. 64-66", especially in light of his comments on the toledot statement in Genesis 2:4. What is the Protevangelium? Per Harbin be clear on the section on Job: (1)authorship, (2)themes, (3)major points. NOTE: This is an excellent book to include in your 5 OT summary books as many folks do not really understand this text. It is wonderful picture of God’s total control of the universe. Remember according to Harbin the “basic” first question the Bible addresses is, "Where did everything come from?". Be clear on how much specific detail...

Bible

...Unlike the narratives of women in the Old Testament, whose role are almost surrounding conceiving and giving birth, the New Testament sets up a distinct account of women role-followers of Jesus’ ministry. What can we assume from the Gospels is the prominence of women in the journey of Jesus’ preachment. Though subordinated to other disciples and mentioned little in the text, Mary Magdalene is the one singling out who exemplifies the worship of Jesus in sprit and truth and her loyalty to the savior even outshines some male followers. Edith Deen’s in his All of The Women of The Bible says, “Her faith is a monument to the healing power of Jesus. Her action in serving him and ministering to him when the mob had turned against him is characteristic of woman in Bible history at her best.” Despite the danger and threat when Jesus was accused by Jewry, Mary and other female followers still keep advocating and trusting in Jesus and their commitment to Jesus are so deep inside their hearts than any other disciples, which we can observe from the critical events of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection. Who was actually witnessing all the events taking place and not leaving? Not the male disciples but precisely the women followers. At the time when they found out Jesus’ body were removed from the tomb, who did return first, no the women but Jesus’ beloved male followers. As we can presume, those women followers sincerely conform to Jesus and trust what he stresses, “I did not say these...

The Role of Women in Religion

...The Role of Women in Religion: The role of women in religious scripture dictates an inferior position in society. Beginning with the creation of Adam and then Eve, as his helpmate. Her purpose was that Adam would not be lonely. This origin provides the ground work for inequality of genders on the basis of religious scripture. The roles prescribed determined that women should be in a subordinate position to man. The female role and relationship with God is defined by the various books of the Old and New Testaments, the reported actions of Jesus Christ, and finally the Qur'an. Initially, Old Testament describes women as the corrupter of man. However, through interpreting the action of Jesus Christ, we see that he holds women in equal roles as men, to include mention of female apostles. The New Testament does not promote equality but does mention the acts of Jesus. Finally, the Qur'an places women in a subservient role allowing men to keep their under control, by any means. Interpretations of the Gods word under the disguise of organized religion are the product of the gender discrimination of the time and continue to paint women as lesser creatures in the eyes of God. The books of the Old Testament, and variations, are recognized by the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim faiths. Each paint women as the temptress responsible for the mistakes of men. Women were the cause of the first punishment given to mankind. Eve persuaded Adam to eat the forbidden fruit, from the...

As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.’” (Genesis 8:21 – 22) Answer: In chapter 8 of Genesis, it describes what happened after 40 days and nights of rain. God allowed Noah to save himself and his family and the animals by building an ark in which they survived 40 days and 40 nights of rain. God remembered Noah and what he have done to save all kinds of creatures on earth. Then god decided not to punish earth because of humankind any more and the day and nights and everything else will never be punished again even if the human beings are born with evils in their heart. Oral Review

...ORAL REVIEW Satan also distorted the facts. He implied that God was unfair in demanding that Adam and Eve “must not eat from every tree of the garden.” Next, Satan got Eve to think about herself and how she could supposedly improve her lot in life, becoming “like God.” Eventually, he got her to focus on the tree and its fruit rather than on her relationship with the One who had given her everything. (Read Genesis 3:6.) Sadly, by eating of the fruit, Eve showed that Jehovah was not the most important Person in her life. 2 The apostle Paul was inspired to say this about Abel “Through it he, although he died, yet speaks.” (Hebrews 11:4) Through what does Abel speak? Through faith, Abel was the first human ever to develop that sterling quality. So powerfully did he demonstrate faith that his example is alive, a vibrant standard that we can apply today if we learn from his faith and seed to imitate it, then the record of Abel is speaking to us in a very real and effective way. Imagine Abel seeing those cherubs when he was a boy. In their materialized form, their appearance surely bespoke immense power. And that “sword.” ever flaming, ever turning, inspired awe as well, as Abel grew up, did he ever find that those cherubs got bored and left their post? No. Day and night, year after year, decade after decade, those intelligent, powerful creatures stayed right in that spot. Avel thus learned that Jehovah God had righteous, steadfast servants. In those cherubs, Abel saw a kind of...

...How does God engage with the world? Terrance Tiessen in his book Providence & Prayer explores eleven theological models that discuss the relationship between God and humanity. Inevitably these models contain overlapping and interweaved concepts namely; creation, the nature of God, the powers and limitations of God, human will, freedom and predestination, the role of prayer and suffering. To answer the question ‘Hoe does God engage with the world?’ this essay will logically progress through these concepts highlighting particular models where relevant. The first point is that God is the creator and thus is not bound by the limitations experienced by creation. As creator He is outside and beyond our concept of time (Tiessen, 2000, p. 190). Boethius puts this nicely “as the complete and perfect possession at once of an endless life” (Tiessen, 2000, p. 190.) As creator, he established a set order of natural law in which the world operates (Jeremiah 31:35-36). As creator He is attributed ownership and lordship of His creation (Psalm 24:1-2). The Bible establishes a paradigm where God is distinct from creation in substance, knowledge, time and power. God’s nature outside of creation renders Him special knowledge. The various models differ in their descriptions and extent of this knowledge and link it inseparably to human freedom (Ariel, 2005). Process theology and the openness model would argue that God does not know with absolute certainly the future (Tiessen, 2000, pp...

...Genesis The basic genre of the book of Genesis is, for the most part, narrative. There are many key themes and events in Genesis, and quite a few of the most popular Bible stories come from this first book of the Old Testament: God’s creation of everything we have come to know as existence, sin (of Adam & Eve, Sodom & Gomorrah, the Tower of Babel, etc.), God’s promises (of love, acceptance, and forgiveness), Joseph’s coat of many colors, and plenty more. After God’s creation of existence, Adam and Eve were disobedient, and therefore were punished. Over time, the human race had become so sinful that God washed everyone except Noah and his family in a global flood Noah's descendant, Abraham, was chosen by God to create a chosen people. Abraham's twelve grandsons from Jacob (who was later renamed Israel) became the “founders” of the land of Israel's twelve tribes. One of Jacob/Israel's sons, Jacob, was sent to Egypt by his brothers (or so they thought- God had planned this for His own reasons, which were good). Joseph's father and family were saved by a newly powerful him. Exodus Exodus’ basic genre is a narrative as well. Key themes and events include: Oppression of the Jews from the Pharaoh, Moses' characterization as the Jews' rescuer, God's plagues sent upon the people, the first passover, Moses parting the red sea, and the fall of Egypt's army. After all of this, the Jews were searching in the wilderness for the promised land, and although God provided them...

Christ the Coming King

...Christ the Coming King Steven Collier Crown College Abstract In this paper I will discuss the different views on the second coming of Christ, the rapture of the church, how the second coming of Christ affects missions, and I give an exegesis of Revelation 20:1-6. I will also discuss why I believe the pre-millennial view is the correct view concerning the return of Christ. There are three schools of thought in the area of the thousand year reign of Christ. They are the amillennial view, postmillennial view, and the premillennial view. Those who believe in a amillennial view do not believe in a literal or an actual future kingdom of peace and prosperity here on earth that will last one thousand years. Those who hold this view tend to view Scripture in a more figurative way than a literal way. They believe the thousand year reign of Christ is symbolic of the church age between the resurrection of Christ and His return. Most amillennialists believe that a spiritual form of the Kingdom of God is present now. Amillennialism reject the idea of a rapture. They believe good and evil will increase in the world as God’s Kingdom parallels the kingdom of Satan. They believe Satan is bound but yet evil increases. They believe when Christ returns the end of the world will occur with a general resurrection and a judgment of all people. They believe Christ will never reign on earth in a literal way but the Kingdom of God exists on earth in the...

Should Same Sex Be Legalized

...legalized because not allowing same-sex marriage is discrimination against minorities, protected by the constitution, and is not a sin according to Bible verses. Those against the idea argue homosexuality is a sin, marriage should be between a man and a woman, and same-sex marriage will weaken the institution of marriage. So which side is correct? And what side are you on? This essay will provide you with the facts about same-sex marriage so that you will be able to answer these questions and form an educated opinion on the topic. When arguing if homosexuality is wrong or right, religious arguments often quote scriptures. The problem with this is that the scriptures being quote have more to the meaning than homosexuality. For example, in Genesis 2:18-25 (NIV), when God created Adam and Eve, one of the biggest sayings is that “God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.” The first problem with using this saying is that it is true God created male and female, as this is the way you reproduce. The verse is not indicating that God created Adam and Eve as husband and wife. Another argument from this verse is that “God created our body’s to be used in a certain way, and we should not use them in any other way.” Well, God created our mouth and ears for communications, our hands to touch with. What about the deaf and mute community that, either born this way or due to an illness, is now this way? This community now uses their hands, intended to touch with not communicate with, for...
