“If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude.” is a quote by Maya Angelou. This quote illustrates that if something is not working for one, they have to change their perspective on how they view the information presented, and approach it with a different mindset. “The Seduction,” by Paula Marantz Cohen connects to what Angelou is trying to convey. The article shows how a teacher changed her attitude towards teaching her students who are non-English majors. She learned to open her mind to new ideas to get a better result. Cohen persuades us that students who are not English majors can become engaged with the text that they might otherwise be bored with by using her humility, examples of her life experience, …show more content…
She connected her class to real life situations. Cohen was able to do this because of her desire to be a true teacher to persuade us to see that students who are not English majors can be very engaged in texts that might seem too boring. Cohen states “A different attitude towards teaching [...] it involves a determination to see the material I teach through the eyes of my student” (Cohen). She wants the students who are non-English majors to learn and be interested. The article went further to shows that her method of teaching was effective towards every student because she connected her readings to real life situations. She states, “Even if the responses are partial and inarticulate if they are genuinely felt, they can make the words on the page seem adjunct to real life, and there is nothing more seductive to students than life.”(Cohen). Cohen’s perspective of looking through the student's eyes helps the student learn because they cannot only understand the text but also enjoy it and engage in activities that the teacher presents. For example, the movie “The Blind Side,” the character Michael Oher need to graduate high school and to do so, he needs to pass the writing program. The school gave him a tutor, but the instructor did not know how to get her message across. So Michael’s legal guardian, in a scene explained how the poem that he was supposed to write connects to football, how the leader of the army is like the head coach of a football team. Connecting that he was successful at writing the essay. In this case, that what Cohen did to her student, which her student was able to react positively to her teaching. Jack Post Abstract Although Douglas Sirk’ All That Heaven Allows (1954) and Todd Haynes’ Far from Heaven (2002) are both characterized as melodramas, they address their spectators differently. The divergent (emotional) reactions towards both films are the effect of different rhetorical strategies: the first can be seen a typical example of baroque discourse and the latter as a specimen of mannerist discourse. The reference to the terms melodrama, mannerism and baroque does not imply that these films are just formal repetitions of historical periods or that they thematically and structurally refer to historical styles, but that they are characterized by opposing discursive strategies which came to the foreground in a specific historical time and constellation. Because these discursive strategies return in other historical periods and socialpolitical circumstances in different guises and with different aims, they can be compared to what Aby Warburg calls Pathosformeln (pathos formula). Based on this affirmation, chapter one investigates both the meaning of vv. 34-35 within the context of Paul’s first extant letter to the Corinthians, and the original message of chapter fourteen without vv. 34-35. Chapter one also offers the most compelling reasons why a scribe would choose chapter fourteen as the place to insert an interpolation against women’s speech in the church. Finally, I examine the parallels between 1 Cor. 14:34-35 and 1 Tim. 2:9-15. Chapter two summarizes the argument that 1 Cor. 14:34-35 is an interpolation. In this chapter, first I investigate the issue of interpolation in ancient literature. Then, I present the arguments based on internal evidences that are both for and against the interpolation of 1 Cor. 14:34-35. Next, I provide a section on external evidences supporting a case of interpolation of vv. 34-35.
