The Ikaniuksalgi, or “the people of the peninsula” (today more commonly referred to as the Seminoles), arrived in Florida late in the eighteenth century. Although other Indians previously inhabited the peninsula, European diseases and wars, along with the immigration of southeastern Indians devastated the aboriginal population. Those few remaining Florida Indians who survived eventually, for the most part, allied and assimilated themselves with the incoming Creeks, other exiled Indians, and runaway slaves seeking freedom. The Creeks’ Muscogee language became the most prevalent in the peninsula, and influenced the generalized grouping of the Florida Indians. But political factors, racial identity, and race relations contributed heavily to …show more content…
Many migrated south looking for better crop lands and game overhunted in the north, and to escape wars with Euro-Americans and enemy Indians. By the time the U.S. occupied Florida, government officials had not yet imposed the general term “Seminole” to most, if not all, Florida Indians as a recognized tribal entity. John Overton, a judge and former advisor to Andrew Jackson, revealed in his book in 1819 the disparate members that made up the Seminoles, “and with them were associated in acts of hostility against the United States, a banditti, consisting of pirates, traitors, English emissaries, negroes, and outlawed Red Stick Indians.” Overton continued, “in the spring of 1818, Congress made provision for prosecuting the war against this renegado and motley crew of black, red, and white combatants, in consequence of the President's message to …show more content…
Southeastern inclusion of Africans among them stemmed from a different concept of race than European construct because kinship counted for more than physical appearance. Southern Whites’ fears of an uprising led to efforts to minimize black participation in Florida, yet maximize their influence on the forced removal of Indians, and war to accomplish this. The cooperation among these mixed groups of people in Florida revealed a more complex situation beyond racial boundaries, and different from the segregation of its neighboring

Seminole Tribe Summary

...In Cattelino’s article on the Seminole tribe, the conflict between tradition and modernity is discussed. The Seminole tribe has had a history of raising cattle and it has “become a marker of Seminole belonging and community identity”, however, their advancements and growth in the industry is continually critiqued as “acculturation”. The idea of The Third Space is illustrated in the article when Cattelino discusses how often Seminole culture and aesthetics are similar to that of a cowboy. He states “the typical midcentury logic contrasted the cowboy with the Indian, but cowboy aesthetics today are Seminole aesthetics” which perfectly counters the usual notion that Native American tribes are copying white culture, when instead it is often the other way around. In addition to cattle, crafts...

Questions regarding working conditions, compensation, quality of management, etc were asked. Objectification In Schools

...While some schools and most colleges have removed Native American team names and mascots, one of the few universities that has stuck with their questionable name has been The Florida State Seminoles. In 2005 they were granted a waiver by the NCAA because of the support from the Florida Seminole Tribal Council. While many use this as a major arguing point to why these names, mascots, and symbols aren't an issue because they have the full support of the tribe, there are massive holes in this argument. The agreement to keep the name “Seminole” came from the Florida Seminole Tribal Council, out of Central Florida, who operates many luxury casinos and hotels, often branding and profiting from the Seminole name and logo. The thing is that the majority of the Seminole Nation doesn’t reside in Florida. The vast majority of the Seminole Nation resides in Oklahoma, a product of the Seminole wars, the Indian Removal Act, and The Trail of Tears, all who do not support the usage of their tribes name for team names and logos. According to an online article in The Nation by Dave Zirin, “Fans treat this much-touted agreement like they have a “racism amnesty card” in their back pocket. The approval of the Seminole Nation, they will tell you makes it all A-okay. Actually it doesn’t.” The majority of Oklahoma Seminoles who do not profit from the name, who do not live with a first world status and who did not make enough money from the name to purchase the Hard Rock Cafe for nearly 700 million dollars...

Indian War

...During the early 1800’s, many of the founding fathers had died and a period of transition existed with new and younger leaders who would try to shape the United States into a nation that they thought it should be in their eyes. Their decisions ultimately helped form our Nation into what it is today. One of these new leaders was President Andrew Jackson. Upon inauguration in 1829, Jackson wanted to settle the ongoing issue of the Indians and the land that they held within the states; as a result most of the energy and resources of his administration were focused on settling the dispute and moving on with the Nation. Within Jacksons first year in office he had plans to relocate the Indians to west of the Mississippi. With the relocation, Americans would be free to settle the land vacated by the Indians. Jackson’s stance on the issue is that if the Indians are not willing to adapt they had to be removed and relocated. Jackson wanted to preserve the Indian nation, however with expansion of the United States quickly approaching Indian Territory, the Indians needed to be moved instead of killed off. Ultimately this led to the Indian Removal Act of 1830. The act was written and in theory was supposed to represent a voluntary movement of the Indians and relocate them so that the white settlers could settle the farm the Indian’s fertile soil. But in reality it was to force Indian off their land and be push them further back into the interior of North America, even...

Health Promotion Among Diverse Populations

...Health Promotion in American Indians/Alaska Natives Mona Reed Grand Canyon University: NRS-429V August 02, 2015 Health Promotion in American Indians/Alaska Natives American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/AN) are people who maintain a tribal or community attachment and are descendants from any of the original inhabitants of North, South and Central America. The U.S. Census Bureau, in 2013, reported that there are greater than 5.2 million AI/AN in the United States, and that number is expected to increase to 11.2 million by 2060 (CDC, 2015a). AI/ANs have experienced a lower health status when compared to the national average of the non-Hispanic white population. The Indian Health Service (IHS), who provides health care services to those who reside on reservations, reports that this is due to inadequate education, discrimination in delivery of health services, disproportionate poverty and cultural differences. Also noted is that less than half of “AI/ANs permanently reside on a reservation and therefore have limited or no access to IHS services” (Indian Health Service, 2015a). In addition, the CDC reported in 2013 that 26.9% of AI/ANs lacked health insurance coverage. This writer will compare and contrast the health status of the AI/AN population with the non-Hispanic White population. Health disparities in the AI/AN population are well documented in research. The Office of Minority Health (OMH) Health Disparities Overview notes that this population suffers from low education...
