Religious eastern traditions have influenced modern medicine in many ways and Eastern medicine has slowly started gaining more popularity in modern Western medicine. In fact, in some countries it is not uncommon to find doctors that include a degree of integration of Eastern and Western medicines into their practice. These doctors use western pharmaceuticals while still integrating Eastern techniques. There are many types of Eastern medicine techniques, also known as holistic medicine or alternative medicine in the United States. Some of these alternative medicines include, acupuncture, aromatherapy, meditation and reflexology. Acupuncture is a Chinese medicine that has been practiced for thousands of years. This practice uses needles that are inserted into the body at different points. When stimulated, these points open or unblock energy flows in the body which ultimately promotes healing and provides pain relief. Aromatherapy is an ancient therapeutic method that uses essential oils and other scented products to aid in disease prevention as well as other ailments. Both Taoism and Confucianism cannot clearly be explained as a religion with certain doctrines and rituals as other well –known religions. As religious and social forces, they have coexisted for centuries in China and have spread to other Asian regions. The name Taoism is taken from the title of the book called “Tao Te Ching, which translates to “the way of nature. Taoism is based on the ancient Chinese understanding of the universe. Historically, the origin of Taoist philosophy is unclear, but it is said that the founder of Taoism is Lao-tzu, who lived in the sixth century B.C.E. Taoism can be described in terms of its history and its effects on Chinese people, nut it cannot be clearly delineated as a religion with a certain body of doctrine and rituals of Chinese antiquity. Philosophically, for Taoism, the ideal life is one that is lived in harmony with the way of this shifting nature. ...INTRODUCTION The plays and prefaces of Bernard Shaw deal with many and diverse themes. At least four, however, concern themselves with evolutionary themes and ideas: Man and Superman, Back to Methusalah, The Simpleton of the Unexpected Isles, and Far-fetched Fables. In Man and Superman, especially the third act, the preface, and The Revolutionist's Handbook and Pocket Companion, Shaw touches on two main themes: the pursuit of man by woman and the direction of evolution, which Shaw sees as leading towards the development of the mind and brain. In Back to Methusalah, Shaw carries forward his vision of evolution as proceeding in the direction of mental development but introduces a seemingly new idea in the last play of the cycle, the antithesis of mind and body. Shaw's dualism receives its most explicit statement in the last play of the cycle although there may be indications of it in the earlier plays. The mind-body antithesis, however, derives as a philosophical problem from Descartes,1 although the antithesis also appeared in the Manichean and Gnostic heresies, the spirit, or mind, being regarded as good and the body as evil. Although the antithesis of body and mind makes its first open appearance in the Methusalah cycle, it is present, at least as an implicit assumption in Man and Superman.
