Rosa, Stella, and Magda are the main characters in the short story “The Shawl.” Rosa is the mother of Stella and Magda. But Magda is different then her mother and sister. She has blonde hair and blue eyes. She was of the Aryan race. The short story took place in a concentration camp. It does not say where exactly but from context clues you realize the kind of situation they are in. Two out of the three characters are starving and they rarely get any food. But when they do get food, Rosa hands it right to Magda. Rosa carries Magda in a shawl. It is where Magda is the most comfortable and she cannot be seen. No one knows that Magda exists. Being that Magda is wrapped in a shawl, she gets to feed off of her mother’s breasts. But eventually Rosa’s breasts stop producing milk. It crossed Rosa’s mind several times to give away her daughter Magda to a random on the street. But Rosa was terrified of getting killed so she never did so. The shawl that carried Magda was magical. When Rosa ran out of breast milk, Magda began to suck on the corner of the shawl. It kept Magda feed for three days and three nights. Stella wanted to eat her little sister because she was very jealous of her. She was so hungry she did not think it would be wrong of her. Stella stole Magda’s shawl from her. Magda has not said a word since Rosa stopped producing milk. But she finally said something when she was looking for her mom when she wondered off. Rosa took the shawl back from Stella and went to go find Magda to show her that she got her shawl back. Rosa held the shawl up in the air and began waving it. But she saw Magda being held up, getting smaller and smaller in the distance. She realized a concentration camp leader had her daughter and was taking her away to kill her. When she realized her daughter was dead she was torn if she should walk towards her daughter’s dead body or stay where she was. If she walked towards the dead body she would have been dead herself.

What Is Self-Created Conflict In The Shawl

...Conflict is a recurring theme amongst humanity. It can be argued that humanity in some ways breeds most conflict from itself. Although some conflict humanity faces are self-created, some conflict is pre-ordained in nature. Author of the short story “The Shawl” set in a concentration camp during the Holocaust, Cynthia Ozick, uses both types of conflict in her story, Both natural and self-created. The second, being the self-created conflict of the holocaust, that our main characters have to endure, and the other conflict being natural. The natural conflict of nurturing your baby and keeping her safe. Self-created conflict can have its roots sprung from various settings, people and actions. Cynthia Ozick roots her story’s conflict right in the...

King Hammurabi

...King Assur-nasir-pal's draped Shawl Pattern Guideline This is another representation of the Assyrian King Assur-nasir-pal. The best way to understand how the drapery is assembled is to observe the stages below right. Over the long tunic above right, the king would have worn a shawl drapery.  The shawl would have measured 72" X 90". To drape this shawl, line E to F would have been folded over so that A to B hangs on the outside of the body. The cord was attached just at E to G. Then hold G at the right side of the waist in front, whilst throwing the rest of the shawl backwards over the right shoulder. Edge E to F was then drawn around the back of the neck and formed a sling over the left arm. To finish draping, the edge E to F was passed around the waist towards the right, under the right elbow, then on around the back until it reached about 6 inches in front of the left side waist.  The remainder of the fabric swathe was folded underneath as seen in the drawing. Finally a cord was tied around the waist to keep the draped shawl firmly in position.  The pictures right also show if cord E to G is pulled down so that E touches the waist, then both the shoulders will be covered by the fabric.  Figure K is the most usual way to arrange the shawl compared to L, but minor adjustments will create the different looks.    Model M is the back view. Version P Model P looks a little more like the costume plate of King Assur-nasir-pal above left.  The costume pattern is based on a small...

...Pashmina refers to a type of fine cashmere wool and the textiles made from it and was first invented in India. The name comes from Pashmineh , made from Indian pashm wool. The wool comes from changthangi or Pashmina sheep, which is a special breed of sheep indigenous to high altitudes of the Himalayas in Nepal, Pakistan and Northern India. Pashmina shawls are hand spun, woven and embroidered in Nepal and Kashmir, and made from fine cashmere fiber. The fiber is also known as pashm or pashmina for its use in the handmade shawls of Himalayas. The woolen shawls made in Kashmir find written mention in Afghan texts between 3rd century BC and the 11th century AD. However, the founder of the cashmere wool industry is traditionally held to be the 15th century ruler of Kashmir, Zayn-ul-Abidin, who introduced weavers from Central Asia .Cashmere shawls have been manufactured in Nepal and Kashmir for thousands of years. The test for a quality pashmina is warmth and feel. Pashmina and Cashmere are derived from mountain goats. One distinct difference between Pashmina and Cashmere is the fiber diameter. Pashmina fibers are finer and thinner than cashmere fiber, therefore, it is ideal for making light weight apparel like fine scarves. Today, however, the word pashmina has been used too liberally and many scarves made from natural or synthetic fiber are sold as Pashmina creating confusion in the market. Some people believe Pashmina from Nepal are the best in quality because of the conditions to...

...Chikankari  Chikan (Hindi: चिकन, Urdu: چکن‬‎) is a traditional embroidery style from Lucknow, India. Literally translated, the word means embroidery. Believed to have been introduced by Nur Jehan, Mughal emperor Jahangir's wife,[1] it is one of Lucknow's most famous textile decoration styles. There are several theories about the origin of Chikankari. Chikankari - the process of chikan - was basically invented in Lucknow. It developed quickly during the period when the Mughals ruled and consisted of styles inspired by Persians. Lucknow grew into an international market for its renowned Chikankari work. There are references to Indian Chikan work as early as 3rd century BC by Megasthenes, who mentioned the use of flowered muslins by Indians. There is also a tale that mentions how a traveler taught Chikankari to a peasant in return of water to drink. However, the Noor Jahan story is the most popular of the lot.[2] The name Chikan has been derived from the Persian word Chakin or Chikeen meaning a cloth wrought with needlework Chikan began as a type of white-on-white (or whitework) embroidery. Chikankari is a delicate and artfully done hand embroidery on a variety of textile fabric like muslin, silk, chiffon, organza, net etc. White thread is embroidered on cool, pastel shades of light muslin and cotton garments. Nowadays chikan embroidery is also done with coloured and silk threads in different colours to meet the recent fashion trends and keep chikankari up-to-date. Lucknow is...

The Lakota Way Analysis

...In the story, “The Lakota Way,” the sagacious writer, Joseph M. Marshall III, tells old Lakota stories that taught our people important lessons. One of the stories, “Story of the Thunders,” tells of a Lakota woman named Red Shawl who runs away with her child when she finds out that her husband is marrying a second wife. Consequently, this tale portrays one of the twelve core qualities; sacrifice. Another Lakota tale, “The Story of the Trickster’s Song,” speaks of the Lakota trickster, Iktomi, who kills a flock of ducks while he pretends to be singing them a sacred song. Moreover, this story depicts the core quality truth. Finally, there was the courageous tale, “The Story of No Moccasins,” which told of a Lakota woman named No Moccasins who...

When the “slavering jaws” (625), “lolling tongue” (625), starveling ribs are put together a beast is created in that every ounce of their being is concentrated to finding something that will satisfy their hunger. Every detail including the wolf’s grizzly features is meant to help the reader picture the sometimes excessive masculinity the beast inside men. However even this masculinity, which is usually related to power and dominance is be easily undertaken by the feminine nature of a beautiful, young woman. Throughout the story the young girl begins to transition to womanhood. And this womanhood enables her to bed the beast of a man who is to have her virginity. The girl in the red shawl is introduced as an adolescent in the midst of puberty. According to the text, she has begun to show with “her breasts [that] have just begun to swell” (627, Carter) and her “woman’s bleeding” (627). As a young girl, she is showered with love, adoration, and affection. Many girls with this type of protection are sometime naïve and don’t...

Messianic Judaism

...An Outside Perspective of Messianic Judaism John W. Stroud HUM/130 November 28, 2010 Terry Barnes An Outside Perspective of Messianic Judaism Many people are born and raised in a religion without ever feeling complete or whole. There are those born and raised Jewish but never felt Judaism provided the answers for which they sought. These unsatisfied Jews have often looked to other religions for their answers. Many of those answers have been found in a form of Judaism that is often looked down upon by the more traditional Jews. This Messianic Judaism combines the core beliefs of Christianity with the traditional Jewish lifestyle. This combination of two distinct religions has shown the world that a religion can allow its members to maintain their traditional lifestyle while providing them with the spiritual nourishment they long for. Messianic Judaism Messianic Judaism is a branch of Judaism that believes Yeshua or Jesus was the Son of God and the Messiah as foretold by the prophets in the Old Testament of the Bible. Messianic Judaism also believes that the Bible, which consists of the Tenach or Holy Scriptures and the B’rit Hadasha or New Covenant, is the only infallible and authoritative word of God (Union of Messianic Jewish Congregations, 2008). This belief includes that the Bible comes from divine inspiration and its teachings are the final authority in matters of faith and how to practice that faith (International Alliance of Messianic Congregations and Synagogues...

She will not listen to made up stories. She is not very old. She is in class three. But she is very intelligent. She can easily find truth and false in stories. It’s a made up story.’ The maid said, ‘Which part is made up?’ ‘Can a tiger talk? Can it go out shopping?’ ‘What you say is true sis,... but....’ ‘Ok, you don’t have to tell me story.’ Nitu is very careful. None can trick her. Not even her uncle. Vestal Virgin

...Searching for a specific work of art through all of the marvelous pieces was a difficult task, but one seemed to stand out from the rest. The artwork that I chose to visually analyze is Portrait of a Lady as a Vestal Virgin painted by Jean-Marc Nattier in 1759. It is a wonderful oil on canvas piece with the main focus of the painting being a beautiful woman draped in a white gown with golden hues and a vivid blue shawl. Jean-Marc Nattier was a well-known portraitist while in the French court under Louis XV reign and would often times paint portraits of the affluent ladies of the court. Most of his portraits were titled with the name of the lady portrayed inside of it, but unfortunately the identity of the woman in Portrait of a Lady as a Vestal Virgin is mystery. His painting has many eye catching aspects, such as the rich color choices, an abundance of texture, extensive depth, a striking focal point, and detailed composition. When looking at the portrait, the viewer will instantly look at the compelling woman...

Jewish Traditions and Customs

...Jewish Traditions and Customs There are several traditions and customs that are practiced in Judaism that are not found in Christianity. I have only read about a few of them. Jewish boys are circumcised on the eighth day of their life. It commemorates the moment where Abraham was given the command to circumcise both himself and his son Ishmael. A mohel performs the operation. A prayer is said in hopes that he the child will commit himself to the Torah, to marriage, and to good deeds. The Jewish faith puts a great value on the Sabbath day. Their Sabbath begins on Friday night. It celebrates Gods relaxation after he was finished building the universe. They light candles, reciting the sanctification, benedictions over bread and wine in their homes. It is a day that they are allowed to abstain from work and spend time studying the Torah, their holy book. The Sabbath ends by Havdalah, when the candle is dipped in wine and spices to symbolize beauty. The Jewish religion has strict restrictions on diet. Everything must be kosher. All animals have certain restrictions. Meat and dairy can not be eaten together. Utensils that are used on non kosher food may not be used with kosher food, if so the food is contaminated. The Torah doesn’t give specific rules for kashrut. When a Jewish person dies, they have a multistage mourning practice. For the first week, the loved ones of the deceased sit at home and are comforted by friends and family. The second...

At one point, the music seemed dark and listed words such as, "Servant, bitch, Jezebel, whore..." When the music arrived at this part, the movements of the performers would be sharp, rather than fluent. The girls seemed to feel suppressed, yet wanting to express themselves in a dynamic way. When they felt suppressed, they had their backs turned. They finally turned around to confront society's darkness when they chanted words together under their breaths. At another point in the play, the performers laid their white shawls on the ground in a line and danced in front and behind it. The line of shawls seemed to...

Honour

Josie Augustine has taught me to give thanks and pray to the creator, plants, and animals. She has explained and taught me why we do such things and why it is so important to us. Not only has she taught me as I was growing up but she has taught people from the community. When I decided to fancy shawl dance and to jingle dress dance that was when I became closer with the creator, and she was there to guide me. When I smoke my language and mispronounced she would not judge me or laugh at me for speaking it incorrectly. Josie would simply say “it’s alright douce, try it again”. She has travelled from Elsipogtog, New Brunswick to Potlotek, Nova Scotia to teach children at the Elementary School. She has introduced different dance styles to the children, and I had gone in one day to teach them how to fancy shawl and jingle dress dance. She has taught them to try and speak mi’kmaq, make their very own regalia’s to wear at pow wows, and also different crafts. She volunteers every other day to help teach children on our reserve and several others because she has so much belief in our culture.
