The Sin Bin or Lucy’s Heart
A characterisation of Lucy
The Sin Bin or Lucy’s Heart begins with the girl Lucy Cooke, who is sitting in detention, or the so-called ‘sin bin’. She’s young; this is made very clear from the fact that she’s at still in school, maybe 7th or 8th grade, and the boy in front of her, who, presumably, is Lucy’s peer, has a lot of spots; a thing associated with teenagers.
She’s in detention for having hit Penny Jones; a girl who apparently has enough problems without Lucy hitting her. Recalling a time when they were close friends, Lucy tells about Penny whose fa-ther hits her mother and how Penny cried then, too (Page 35, line 20-22).
But why does Lucy hit her then? Why would she do that to a girl she knows is in a bad enough situation already? The immediate and easy answer would be that Lucy does this for popularity. Be-than, a girl whom wiggled herself into Lucy’s life and is now her best friend, is the toughest girl in their year. Without having anything to say about it, and I sincerely doubt that Lucy had anything to say in this situation, as Bethan one day ‘decided’ that they should be best friends, Lucy finds her-self sandwiched between the girl she defines herself as; the brainiest girl in the year, and the girl the rest of the school defines her as when she hangs out with Bethan. Her reputation changes; she goes from being smart, and maybe not that popular, to being a stereotypical ‘tough girl’ and feared. Many people has a hard time distinguishing fear and respect, and it’s implied that Lucy enjoys being in the spotlight when she tells about her second place a Prize Day, so she finds herself imitating Bethan.
Lucy is a very dependant soul; she isn’t capable of making her own decisions, which is why she throughout the story rationalises her actions with “she says”. An example is on page 35, line 40- 41. Bethan tells her that she has to wear blue eyeliner, and even though Lucy doesn’t like it she wears it anyway. When she then goes home she takes it off because her mom says she shouldn’t wear make-up. The reason Lucy hit Penny is that Lucy has become so dependent on Bethan telling her what to do so she doesn’t have to make her own decisions, to find her own identity, that she would rather do something she knows is wrong than lose that thing that makes her life easier by living it for her: Bethan.
I think that the reason that it is Penny in particular Lucy hits is because Penny represents Lucy’s old life. The way Lucy’s life was before she became friends with Bethan.
It’s made very clear that Lucy is a grade A-student, and she wanted to go to the private school Howell’s. Penny too is a good student; she came in fourth whereas Lucy came in second at Prize Day, Penny and Lucy used to be close, and now Penny attends Howell’s. It’s something Lucy can identify with, but since she’s supposed to leave behind her old identity, and become a whole new person, Bethan tells her to hit Penny; the superficial picture of who Lucy used to be, and the former best friend. Hitting her is like burning the last bridge between who Penny wants to be and who she thinks is the easiest to be. It has nothing to do with Lucy not liking Penny, because she does, actual-ly I think Lucy feels a bit superior to Penny, as she constantly victimises her by thinking ‘poor Pen-ny’, and by mentioning that she was academically better.
This story is about identity and finding who you are. Lucy dreads those things and is too scared to take matters into own hands. The reason she looks forward to the future is because at her age we are supposed to find out who we are. Sometimes during the story se says “I can’t wait for the future when there aren’t so many things to worry about.”. What I think she refers to are the superficial things such as whether or not to wear blue eyeliner or how I big a proprity school is, but I also think that those concerns root deeper than that. We live in a world of labels; you do something and that’s who you are. If Lucy goes with Bethan on her ‘tough-girl’ act, that’s who she’ll eventually become, because that is how the world will se her, and mold her into.
When it comes to the heart she’s drawing she starts out with “Copying line drawings of the heart”, and I think this is a statement that she is just copying what others are telling her to do. Next thing she says is “my heart is rubbish”, meanning she is dissatisfied with copying what others tell her. “The heart is shaped like an upside-down pear” she says, and I think this means that it feels wrong; it feels like it has fallen upside-down, awkwardly misplaced in her chest, because this heart isn’t her. Then she’s adding some fur to the arteries, and she’s doing them hard and black, like tar. Because that how she imagines her heart looks like. Hard ad black.
On page 36 she asks for a new piece og paper. I think that this is equal to her asking for a second chance, and Mr. Paterson, the teacher, gives her the new piece of paper, symbolically giving her a second chance. Her mom always told her to use softer pencils than the one she is using, and she then roots around the bottom of her bag to find one, only to reveal that she haas a quite impressive collection of pencils. Metaphorically this, to me, means that she uses this second chance she has gotten to become softer like her mother told her and the person she wants to be. The wide range of pencils represents the different personlaities of Lucy Cooke, and she has to choose now. She selects the last, soothest and softest pencil of them all. When she is nearly finished she states that she thinks that this one looks more real, meaning she identifies with this one better. In the end though, when Paterson tells her her heart is really good, and if she wants to keep it, she tells him to chuck it. She then heads over to Bethan. Her decision is made.

...The sin bin or Lucy’s heart I can see Lucy walking straight in my direction. She looks a little nervous, but focused on the same time. It has been a while since I have talked to her. It was before she became Bethan’s best friend. I miss her sometimes, but when I see her with Bethan, she is not the same Lucy I knew. She has changed a lot. I do not hope that she is pretending to be someone she is not. “Penny!” Lucy catches me in my way out of the door. “Oh. Hi Lucy” I am a bit confused. What does she want from me? “Please meet me down the subway after school” Lucy sounds nervous too. I cannot look her in the eyes, because she keeps looking in different directions. I can feel my face turning into a grimace you only see in a scary movie or something like that. I am not scared, but I think I look quite stupid or maybe just really choked. Now she hurries back to Bethan who is waiting for her at the other side of the schoolyard. It is all really confusing at that point. The time before my meeting with Lucy goes too slowly. I cannot wait to see what she wants from me. After school I walk down the subway to look for Lucy, but I cannot find her. Is this just a stupid joke? I cannot stop thinking that, until she appears out of nowhere. She comes straight to me with no sense of hesitation. Suddenly her hand hits my face, and a pain spreads through my whole body. I do not think it is just physic pain, because it really hurts that she could do that. The hitting part just reminds me of...

Essay - the Sin Bin & Lucy's Heart

...Essay – The Sin Bin or Lucy’s Heart Sometimes life can be hard. Especially when you are a teenager, that is for sure. And that is was Lucy Cross is telling us about in her short story ”The Sin Bin or Lucy’s heart”. The whole story takes place in a greenhouse at their school, which is also used as a detention room. And that is where Lucy is sitting. She is just sitting there and draws a heart with her 2B pencil. Lucy is, taking a guess, about 16-17 years old and lives in Cardiff, where she also goes to school. The main problem in this short story is that Lucy has changed from being a good friend and a fantastic student, to being a person hanging with the wrong people and she starts doing things she, deep inside does not want to do, like hitting an old friend Penny Jones. Which is why she is sitting in this room. If you look through the whole short story, Lucy is a first person narrator. And that is because the whole story is from her own point of view. The smart thing about using first person-narrator for this story is, that the reader learns everything about Lucy’s feelings & thoughts. And that is a very important part for this story to make sense. If the reader did not know what she was feeling, it would be really hard to understand the development she goes through. Lucy is also a round character, which means that she develops throughout the short story. You can see from the text (34) “Lucy Cooke. What happened to the Straight A student I used to teach? Hm? And picking...

The Sin Bin

...The Sin Bin or Lucy’s Heart It is not and has never been easy being a teenager. With teenage life, comes confusion, overwhelming feelings, a new self-awareness and search for one’s identity and path of life. This is exactly what we see in Lucy Cross’s short story “The Sin Bin or Lucy’s Heart”, where we meet a teenage girl, who is very unsure of what she wants and therefor only strives to please her surroundings in her search for acceptance. She is at a breaking point, where she has to choose her way, identity, and which type of friends she wants to be related to. Which way will she go? Through a first-person narrator we are able to know what Lucy is thinking. This gives us greater insight into what goes on in her mind. Lucy is an A-grade student, but it is not all fun and games. She is a teenage girl struggling to find herself and way in life. She is at that stage where you have to decide, who you want to be and which is something your surroundings has a great impact on. The first thing we learn from the story is that she is in detention and therefore the reader immediately gets the impression that the main character is a “bad girl”. But we are soon proven wrong. The reaction of her old teacher to her detention, clearly shoes how unusual it is for Lucy to behave this way. “What on earth are you doing in here, Lucy?”She was given detention because she hit Penny Jones. “Penny Jones is very thin. When I hit her, I thought she just might fall over.” “… I didn’t know where...

Characterisation on Lucy Cooke

...Characterization of Lucy Cooke The sin bin or Lucy’s heart is about a girl named Lucy Cooke, she is in her teens, and she is one of the best students at her school “last year I came in second in the year” (page 36, line 11). The reader is told in the beginning of the story that she has detention because she punched another girl at school whose name was Penny Jones. The reason she hit that girl, was because her best friend, Bethan, asked her to do so, even though Lucy did not entirely understand why, she still did it. Lucy seems like a proud girl, and she loves the fact that she is so good at her studies but as the story goes on, it becomes more and more clear to the reader that she is not exactly strong-willed since she lets Bethan control her like she does. But this unreasonable behavior could be because Lucy does not want to be left out at school; maybe she believes that the friends are worth so much more than her studies that she “needs” those friends. When you are reading this story, you automatically think that Lucy seems like this reserved, brainy and shy type of girl, that nobody really likes. When Lucy were about to hit Penny, she hesitated, no doubt about that, what could Lucy’s feelings be toward Penny? Maybe she likes Penny because Lucy knows that they are the same type of person, they are both smart, and love to go to school, the only difference is that Lucy cares way more about being popular, and Penny does not. I think that Lucy’s relationship to her mother, is not...
