...condominium for about 30% less than the going rate a year ago. Why was the condominium so cheap? The property agent replied that the previous tenant — a high-ranking oil and gas (O&G) official — had lost his job. “It’s quite common now for O&G expatriates to lose their jobs, so the property market has also been impacted,” the agent said. According to a senior executive in the once-booming oil and gas sector, as many as 7,000 to 8,000 executives have lost their jobs after the second round of industry-wide retrenchments in the country. He has been told by colleagues that Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), Scomi Group Bhd and UMW Oil & Gas Corp Bhd have put a freeze on hiring and the list of companies doing the same is getting longer. “Worse still, MMHE [Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings Bhd] is looking to discontinue the services of as many as 800 contractual workers, and Petronas is also mulling over a similar move,” he says. Such moves are often denied and never publicised. An MMHE official tells The Edge that the company only makes such announcements internally, but adds that she has not heard of recent staff-reduction exercises. “MMHE, like most businesses, is operating in a very competitive industry and under tough economic conditions. Regrettably, this often has an unavoidable impact on staff,” an MMHE spokesperson says.   Nevertheless, the anxiety caused by the rumours is understandable considering MMHE in its annual report for FY2014 says that it has 3,220 employees...

...increasing significantly in 1960s due to the discovery and development of offshore fields in Borneo. The late 1960s saw the beginning of offshore oil exploration in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. In the 1970s, some oil fields in Malaysia were producing 90,000 to 99,000 bbls/d. [2] In the early days, foreign oil companies dominated the oil and gas industry in Malaysia with Shell and Esso being the two major players. This was followed by several other foreign companies such as Conoco, Mobil, Aquitaine, Oceanic and Teiseki. The national company, Petronas came on to the scene in 1974. [2] In return for royalties and taxes, the foreign companies were given petroleum concessions by state governments, which accorded them exclusive rights to explore and produce resources. However, exploration licences of these companies ceased to have effect with the passing of the Petroleum Development Act in Parliament in 1974, which granted Petronas ownership and control of the...

Cimb Bank

...2.0 Introduction The banking industry has undergone tremendous changes after the Asian Financial Crisis in year 1997. CIMB bank, as a major player in this industry, has faced a lot of challenges from local and international. As a growing bank in that time, CIMB bank has struggled hardly to become the best financial institution in Malaysia. In recent years, the government has liberalized the banking industry, which allows more foreign financial institutions to start their business here. This has increased the level of competition within the industry and in fact, has affected the position of CIMB bank as one of the leading banks in local market. Owing to certain problems mentioned above, we have chosen CIMB bank as the topic to perform in-depth research and analysis on the organization. Our main objective is to advise the Board of Directors of CIMB bank on the impact and implications of current developments and challenges on its organization and make appropriate recommendations to ensure the continued relevance, competitiveness and growth of the organization. CIMB bank has many retail branches across the ASEAN and operates under several corporate entities such as CIMB Investment Bank, CIMB Islamic, CIMB Securities International and etc. Besides, CIMB bank business model basically covers several areas which are Consumer Banking, Insurance & Takaful, Corporate & Institutional Banking and CIMB Thai. ...International Monetary Fund (IMF) defined Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) as “ an incorporated or unincorporated enterprise in which a foreign investor owns 10% or more of the ordinary shares or voting power of an incorporated enterprise or the equivalent of an unincorporated enterprise”. (IMF, 2004). Gilomore, O’s Donnel, Carson and Cummins (2003) stated, “There are eight factors that are influencing the choice of host market in terms of FDI. They are knowledge and experience of foreign market, size and growth of the foreign market, government emphasis on FDI and financial incentives, economic policy, transportation material and labor cost, availability of resources, technology
and political stability.” Since 1970s FDI inflows increased in Malaysia reaching its peak around the 1990s and since then fluctuating and recently experiencing outflows of foreign funds. (TheGlobalEconomy, 2016). The objective of this essay is to discuss factors influencing a decrease in FDI in Malaysia. Slow economic growth is one of the factors that have affected FDI in Malaysia. According to Hill, Cronk & Wickramasekera (2013), “Economic growth is an increase in the productive capacity and national output of a country, measured by the rate of increase of GDP”. China being Malaysia’s second biggest export market after Singapore has a direct impact on the Malaysian economy. (Hui, 2014). Because of a lower economic growth in China, demand for Malaysian goods and services have declined in the...

In our opinion we think that the possibility of Jamel short-changinng is high. We have indentified the fraud symptoms as below: 1. Unusual behaviour - Jamel’s body language Unusual behaviour is seen through an individual's recognizable behaviour pattern to attempt to cope with the stress. The guilty leads to fear; fear leads to stress; and stress leads to behaviour changes. Research in psychology reveals that when a person, especially a first-time offender, commits a crime, he or she becomes engulfed by emotions of fear and guilt. Those emotions cause the individual to experience a significant amount of stress, and in order to cope with the stress, the individual will exhibit unusual and recognizable behaviour patterns. In this case, Jamel’s behaviour is very suspicious. First, body language such as the facial expressions and body posture can show people emotion and thinking especially...

Malaysian Airlines: a Business Turnover

...Malaysian Airlines: A Business Turnover Name: Course: Instructor: Date: Malaysian Airlines: A Business Turnover Summary Malaysia Airlines ranks among the top government-run agencies in Malaysia. The organization is the national carrier for the country flying to over 100 destinations in six continents across the world. It is based at the Kuala Lampur International Airport where its core operations are run, and recent statistics indicate that it has the strongest influence in East and south Asia regions. However, it is also important to note that its influence is also growing in Europe and Australia, which technocrats believe to be the growing influence in the kangaroo routes leading to Australia and the pacific (Alamdari & Fagan, 2005). The organization has undergone tremendous changes to position itself strategically in the rapidly changing world of air transport. With the increased competition ranging from the swiftly growing carriers including the Emirates, Qatar airways and Etihad airways, and the low cost competitors such as Air Asia and Jetstar to the well-established carriers such as Cathy Pacific and Singapore airlines, the organizations have enacted strategic changes to position itself on the global air transport market. The wakeup call came in 2005 when the airline experienced its worst experience. The Malaysia Airline System achieved success in two years and braced the impact of the financial meltdown that rocked the world at around...

...The inclusion of a brief summary (‘Executive Summary’) is standard reporting practice and is meant to act as a guide to the contents of the report and to highlight major conclusions and recommendations. The Executive Summary derives its name from the practice of providing the executives of an organisation, that is, those responsible for making decisions and taking appropriate action, with a concise outline of the major points in a report to save them time. The detail can be pursued in more depth later by a complete reading of the report. The structure of the Executive Summary should follow the structure of the report and include brief statements on the following:  definition of the problem  aims and objectives  methods/data sources  key findings  conclusions  any recommendations for action. The Executive Summary should be brief and succinct, and may use point form to achieve this. As a rule-of-thumb, allow one page for every 5,000 words up to a maximum of five pages, and using headings in longer Executive Summaries.
