Who are they?
History

The Stellat’en First Nations group are part of a large group of indigenous people called the Dakelh. The Dakelh meaning “people who travel by boat” and Stellat’en means “people of the peninsula”. The Stellat’en culture is based on the clan system and it consists of four clans. The Bear, Beaver, Frog and Caribou. The Stellat’en first nations group is a matrilineal society where hereditary chiefs are traced through the mother’s lineage, and both clans and names are inherited through the mother. It is stated on their website that each clan has a spokesperson that is elected to speak on their behalf. There is also an elected chief and council of the Stellat’en people, who are elected every two years.
