The Theft of a Dream
I. A contracted job is not forced upon someone, it is something that they choose and are contractually required to complete. A. Introduction 1. A contractor is paid for a renovation he never completed. a. Imagine you have just purchased your dream home or at least what will be your dream home with a few renovations. You go in search of a contractor and you think you have found the perfect one because he has you envisioning all of the potential your new home holds and has wowed you with everything he says he can do for you, oh and of course all at a great price. You sign the contract, pay the contractor and he gets to work. Before you know it your ceilings, walls, toilets are all gone and to your surprise so is the contractor along with your hard earned money. b. If a contract is signed between a homeowner and contractor then that is a binding agreement that work will be completed as outlined in that contract. If work is not completed as outlined then any money in excess of the completed work should be returned to the homeowner. B. Body 1. Forced work or contractual agreement? a. According to the Better Business Bureau, New York State law requires that home improvement contractors deposit all payments received prior to the completion of the job into an escrow account, to be withdrawn according to the schedule set forth in the contract. b. So my question is where is the money that is left from the incomplete job? Doesn’t keeping this money make the contractor a thief? c. My opponent is going to try to convince you that the homeowners are forcing this contractor to work and that this is slavery under the 13th amendment, this is not true. It is stated in the case of the U.S. V Kozminski, 1988, involuntary servitude is when a

Idenitty Theft

...a victim of identity theft. What is identity theft you ask? It is a form of fraud or cheating of another person's identity in which someone pretends to be someone else by assuming that person's identity, typically in order to access resources or obtain credit and other benefits in that person's name. According to the national association of the attorneys general, “Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the nation with an estimated 700,000 victims each year and after the victim discovers their theft, they spend an average of 808 dollars to clear up the discrepancies along with 175 hours approx. Restoring their reputation by means of notifying the credit bureaus, cancelling cards, and negotiating with creditors (2006.) Currently those numbers are now even higher at 1,495 dollars in expenses and 609 hours to clean up credit”. Identity theft happens all the time. This is partly caused because of who you trust and what you put on the internet. In the paragraphs to come we will get into the types and stages of identity theft, who it affects and how you can protect yourself. According to the NIJ (National Institute of Justice), there are seven broad types of identity theft and three stages. The Seven stages are exploiting weakness in specific technologies and information system, financial scams, a motive for other crimes, facilitating other crimes, avoiding arrest, repeat victimization (“classic” identity theft), and organized identity theft. The three stages are;...

How Dreams Connect to Wish Fulfillment

...How Dreams Connect to Wish Fulfillment Dreams are a very diverse subject in cinema because of the various ways they are portrayed and played out in a film. They are open to have anything happen in them, and the advancement in cinematography and postproduction makes it possible to take many different artistic directions when filming dream sequences in a film. It is also possible for a dream to have meanings and purposes, such as playing a role in fulfilling a wish that someone cannot normally achieve in reality on their own. This idea is represented well by the protagonist in Sherlock Jr., a projectionist who yearns to become a detective. Since Sherlock Jr. is a silent film, the protagonist’s feelings and emotions, as well as the emotions of all of the other characters, are heavily portrayed through their actions and facial expressions, as well as dialogue and backstory that are shown on the title cards. One of the projectionist’s desires is explained at the very start of the film, first written on the second title card and then in the first and second opening shot where he is seen reading a book titled “How To Be A Detective.” In the first shot where he is seen sitting by himself and the big empty theater can be perceived as representing how enthralled he is in his own world of wanting to be a detective. While reading the book, the protagonist shows more of his desire by taking out a magnifying glass and inspecting his own fingerprint, and by wearing a fake moustache to...

The Strain Theory

...gives credibility to the ability of people to live cordially as they learn a particular living environment or system. The Strain Theory does an excellent job of explaining white collar crime, along with the contextual anomie/ strain theory. While examining this theory, it was discovered as the most compelling in our constant battle with white collar and corporate crimes. Ever since the beginning of recorded history man/woman has tried to achieve a better life, but not much has changed in today’s standards, since it can be said it is more now than ever. From television, and radio we see the American dream of home ownership, the ability to fit into the society with the latest gadgets. At the same time trying to further their education has its roots in the American dream of more pay, a better job, and the ability to retire all these things is associated with the American dream of more money. While reading this theory I took a closer look into what fuels the human mind in our society. White collar crime in most cases, according to the Strain Theory and my own beliefs is what fuel the human desire to be successful. Greed has always and always will be a driving force in our society, I see no relief in sight unless we as a society find some way that money is no longer the means to an end, but how would we survive without money. According to Merton (1957), he stated that not all individuals have the opportunity to success, including a lack of education, which may play a role in...

A New Work Ethic

...Most employees at my place of employment don’t value their jobs. They don’t see customer service in their future and many say it’s not their last stop. They too don’t like hard work and long hours. I often hear co-workers brushing customers off the phone with a quick transfer to another department, that can’t even resolve that customers issues. Many of them don’t have any work ethic. Work ethic is a belief in the moral benefit and importance of work and its inherent ability to strengthen character. I think the importance of work will show if you are performing in a job that you love. In most work environments that I have worked in it’s the same. My co-workers hated that job, they hated the long hours and they hated the boss. They would dream of the day that they would no longer have to do this job and actually retire. 2. Explain the implications of the work ethic Sheehy describes for the future of American business. In the case study the implications are more based on that of college students. It seems as the future of American business will have younger employees focused on no-holds- barred,...

Work Ethic

...The New Work Ethic BUS 309: Business Ethics The New Work Ethic It is becoming harder to find good work ethics in this day and time. A lot of employees view their job as one the worst jobs to be in. In the article that Sheehy wrote, “A new work ethic”, he describes his employees as having a carefree attitude. He writes about how many employees just want to go to their place of work, but actually do no work. Employers have said that it is becoming such a big issue in finding reliable employees with a drive and willingness to actually perform their job duties. Companies are trying to reintegrate that they need greatly devoted and dedicated people that love the job that they are doing and are willing to help with the continuing growth and profit of making the business a success. Sheehy talks about his employees having a do what you want and get away with what you can kind of attitude (Shaw, 2010). Sometime you could even see them slow down the pace of their tasks or even put it on hold so that someone other than them would have to finish the job at hand. Most of the employees were either upper or middle class college student that just saw the job as a way to make some extra cash. Their customer relations skills were getting rid of the customer as fast as possible and with hardly any effort. This made the integrity, reliability, quality and service of the business very poor. Many researchers fear that college students have no realistic concept of the term “a day’s work...

Unit 3

...Little Dreams Nursery has a variety of policies and procedures which have been put into place to help protect the children who go there. One of the policies which is including within this nursery is the Accident and Injury Policy which ensures that if an accident happens at Little Dreams Nursery then the appropriate course of action will be taken and accurate information will be recorded and communicated between the staff and person who was injured. This policy affects the children within this nursery as if one of them has an accident then the staff will know what to do as it is the responsibility of every staff member to do their job properly and protect the children from harm. This means that they should not neglect a child when they have had an accident. Furthermore, the members of staff need to ensure that the children are in a well-kept environment that is safe for them and that they support the children to the best of their ability. If this policy isn’t followed and the staff do not provide first aid and the support needed for medical attention it shows that the staff are not considering the children’s needs and are not looking after them properly. An example of this is if one of the children cut their finger and the staff member does not provide first aid for that child, their finger could become infected. Moreover, another policy is the Child Protection Policy which means that the nursery will need to provide an environment where the children and the children’s parents...

What Excites Me About My Future in Technology

...Ibukunoluwa Sobayo Lee University April 10, 2015 What Excites Me About The Future Of Technology? It is not news that we are at the peak of technological advancements that will change our lives. Nothing has made more impact on how we live our lives today or carry the potential to so seriously improve the human condition, as the technologies each one of us now has at our disposal, and the wonders yet to come. The inter-connectedness we have, the vast amounts of information accessible to us in less than a minute, the way in which anyone with basic knowledge can communicate with their friends and family, or even the entire world is quite impressive. The ease and convenience with which we can access almost any resource on the internet using anything from a mere personal computer to a small smart device in the pocket is highly impressive. I am encouraged and grateful to be part of such a great global innovation. I truly believe that personal and individually accessible technologies, will become an important part of humanity’s next stage of growth in the general quality of life and even survival. There is such a great potential to empower any individual to interact with people all over the world – from family and friends to new people on the other side of the planet. Nothing the human race has seen to date has the potential to empower the individual to make as much of a difference, to make as much of a connection, to make as much of himself as the technologies we have now and those...

Information Theft

...William Parshall Mr. Burke June 6, 2015 Information Theft Is information theft in today’s world, using the internet primarily, a pertinent issue? The world grows continually smaller. Each passing day interconnectivity amongst personal computers becomes increasingly normative. These electronic bridges are at the foundation of the networks of networks which comprise the Internet, which was initially a concept developed as a means by which both communication and vast archives of information could be preserved in the event of a nuclear war. The design was simple: a system of information exchange which was indestructible in its redundancy. In other words, Russia would need to vaporize North America entirely to with the Cold War. In the absence of a real war, for years the Internet remained inhabited largely by members of academic and scientific communities who prized and throve upon instant exchange of information. It was these individuals who became the first denizens of cyberspace, a new frontier characterized, like the wild west, by anarchy and governed, similarly, by the good sense of inhabitants. With interest in the Internet as a phenomenon increasing steadily over the past decade, however, it is evident that those now living are witnesses of a bizarre transformation whereby technological experience becomes wholly integral to our daily routine. As scores flock to experience the new online realm, tiny enclaves of similarly-interested individuals coalesce into electronic...

The Runaway Case Study

...What would you do if you were faced with a decision that could be between life and death, when you had no friends to cheer you up, nor a family to help you, and no God to shine his face upon your own? Johnny should not have shown his cup to Mr. Lyte for three reasons: He could have been accused of theft, become a Whig, or have lost all his old friends. The first reason Johnny should not have shown his cup to Mr. Lyte is that he could have been accused of theft. Johnny had already been told by his friend Rab that Mr. Lyte was a very crooked man, and for Johnny to assume a place at Mr. Lyte’s right hand would simply be given to him without question was a very idiotic hypothesis. Johnny should not have even tried to open up such diplomacy, for it would have been nothing for a man like Mr. Lyte to simply snap his fingers and send Johnny to the gallows. The second reason Johnny should not have shown his cup to Mr. Lyte is that he would have lost old friends. If Johnny had succeeded and was welcomed into the Lyte’s formidable household Johnny’s social life would have been carefully directed by Mr. Lyte and him alone. For one thing, the respected Whig would never allow Johnny to associate with Rab or other patriots like him. Also...

...Resume is in my Cells. What does this mean? How does a paper resume compare to a DNA resume? Answer 1: He means that all the attributes they need to know about him are in his cells considering that they now can read your future strength knowledge and capabilities even when you will die. A paper resume is kind of the same as them reading your DNA only difference is that when you hand out a paper resume you can lie about all your attributes and experiences on a paper resume. In addition, on the DNA resume, they do not need you to turn in anything just your blood and they have everything they need to know about you without the possibility of you lying. Protective Identity Theft Measures

...Easy Measures for Increasing Identity Theft Protection Introduction Imagine getting ready to purchase a home. Your family has outgrown the house you are currently living in, and a bigger home would be a perfect fit for your family. Since you have owned your home for many years and made your payments on time (along with your other bills), you feel applying for a home loan will be easy. With banks offering lower interest rates and trying to obtain business from customers, now is the time (you feel) to apply for a home loan. You walk into the bank and meet with the local loan officer. After explaining your financial and work situation, the loan officer provides an interest rate and term on a home loan. You find the home loan favorable and wish to proceed with the home loan. The loan officer is happy to proceed and explains that a credit report will need to be pulled. You agree to have your credit report pulled, as you feel your credit score is in good shape. The loan officer pulls your credit report and you see a look of concern come across his face. The loan officer prints your credit report and proceeds to tell you that due to your high debt, failure to make payments, and low credit score; the bank cannot offer you a loan. You now have this look of horror on your face as you do not know how you have late payments, your debt is high, and your credit score is low. You ask to see your credit report. When you review the credit report, you realize these unpaid, high-balance...

Social Justice: Identity Theft

...dropped the phone, after his shock, he picked up the phone and explained that he never purchased anything from them, and she asked if he was who he said was, he said yes. The lady commanded him to pay the money as soon as possible or she would involve the police. Peter realized that he may have identity theft, and with that thought he never went back to sleep. "Identity theft occurs when an unauthorized person obtains another's name and a piece of critical identifying information about that person such as a credit card or bank account number, social security number or driver's license number. With these two pieces of information, someone can open credit card accounts in someone else's name and go on spending sprees for personal items or for things that can easily be sold. When bills are not paid, the delinquent account shows up on that person's credit report. The identity thief can change the mailing address on the victim's credit card account thus delaying the discovery of the theft. The imposter then runs up big bills on the victim's account, and since they are being sent to the new address, one would have no way of knowing any of this was going on” ( Poster, 119). Identity theft is one of the biggest and most costly crimes committed today. Every second of the day someone’s identity is stolen. This often results in a person losing almost everything including their most valuable asset, their name. However, who pays for all of the transactions and purchases? Who is the actual...

Amir's Consequences In The Kite Runner

...It also separated Hassan from his biological father. Another consequence of Amir’s actions is Hassan’s death. Directly, Hassan was killed by the Taliban, but Amir was responsible for causing it. Amir dreams about how Hassan died: “I see the barrel first. Then the man standing behind him. He is tall, dressed in a herringbone vest and a black turban. He looks down at the blindfolded man before him with eyes that show nothing but a vast, cavernous emptiness. He takes a step back and raises the barrel. Places it on the back of the kneeling man's head. For a moment, fading sunlight catches in the metal and twinkles. The rifle roars with a deafening crack. I follow the barrel on its upward arc. I see the face behind the plume of smoke swirling from the muzzle. I am the man in the herringbone vest” (Hosseini 240). Amir discerns that he is responsible for Hassan’s death because he has a dream in which he is the Talib that kills Hassan. Amir’s choice affected Hassan’s destiny because if he was in the U.S., Hassan would not have died. In summary, Amir’s guilt, Hassan and Ali’s exile, and Hassan’s death were a result of Amir’s decision to...

Applying the Sociological Perspective.

...Is GTA V the new ideal of life? Grand Theft Auto V is an open world action-adventure video game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. The article by Keith Stuart, following the release of the new GTA video game suggests that, the mentality and state of life presented in the video game is representation of modern life. Its appeal is in its danger; a place where the kill-at-will, sexualized fantasy world of interactive entertainment is let loose in cities based on, real-world places. Being set in Los Santos the game provides violence, action and a close relationship to what many would think of as Los Angeles. Modern society has turned into Hollywood movie, these games have become an over dramatic representation of what people view as a ‘fun life’. From this article one could determine in the game the structure of society, how people are categorized into social class and the components that react within society that influence the structure. One could also determine where society stands in human history, and what varieties of people now prevail in society and in this period of time. These topics help sociologists discover how and why people interact with one another the way they do in a group setting. The article touches on how civilization in the game as a whole looks at life in a different way. Through-out GTA V the social structure is different in the game than that of our society. Crime and violence stand out as what can and will make a person successful...
