Bullying in School

...Pasley Bullying in School Bullying in school has been going on for decades and has been a constant issue that was not spoken about or dealt with for many years. Students being made fun of really had nobody to turn to for help to have bullying stopped. According to authors’ Aluede, Adeleke, Omoike & Afen-Akpaida, “bullying research began in the 1970’s after author Dan Olweus began and wrote a book about it.” (2008, p.152). Olweus book is considered the first study of bullying. (Noelle, 2005). For the past few years bullying in school has become a topic of open concern. Bullying in schools has become a nationwide problem and schools need to be held accountable because the students are in their care, bullying has caused students to commit suicide, and bullying has led to students dropping out of school. Bullying in school happens while students are in their care. Teachers are present in school all day and must make the effort to stop bullying when they see it happening. School faculty should be able to report all cases of bullying to the Police and the Department of Education. According to an authors’ Dagman Strohmeier and Gil Nolan, “Educators often do not pay enough attention to the fact that bullying is usually not a single event; rather it happens repeatedly over a period of time.” (2012, p.8). Since teachers make up a big part of the school system this is one reason for schools to be held accountable for the bullying going on in...

...Design first started before the Industrial Revolution, but my report starts here. England was the center of this revolution, which was from the 1700's- 1850's. In the pre-industrial era, villages traded with other villages, and over time villages started to specialize in producing certain products to trade. As a result, a lot of gear was being designed. Many smart people were inventing machines, but when James Watts invented the steam engine, mechanized industry developed, and industrial machines, factories, and cities took off, along with pollution, poverty, sickness and industrial accidents. The designers of these machines were rich factory owners who were skilled in mechanical design, rather than artistic design. At this point in time a man called William Morris stepped in and started a design movement known as The Arts and Crafts Movement in 1860. Morris didn't like the way the Industrial Revolution shaped the world, because the machines were ugly and all of the products they were producing were too, so he looked to the past for inspiration. He wanted to get rid of mass production and revive the crafts and skills of an older, pre-industrial era. He pledged himself to decorative arts, and rejected the machine. Morris was an upper class artist and poet who was well educated and fairly wealthy. He started a company called Morris and Co. He designed cloths, carpets, chairs, book covers, stained glass windows, and wall paper, which were all hand- made, and hand-painted with...

Gender Roles in Disney Movies

...Gender Roles in Disney Movies It is undeniable that the company that is leading to many generations in their child age is Disney. Who does not remember Mickey and Minnie Mouse?, Who has not thrown a tear when Snow White was poisoned by the evil witch?, Who did not want to ever be in the place of handsome John Smith or Pocahontas herself to revive their love story?, that tender these films, is not it, for example the Little Mermaid and Sebastian the crab song, who does not remember that song from "under the sea”? Has anybody ever wondered why the dwarves themselves did not do the housework when they came home once Snow White "moved in" with them? Or why an Indian as Pocahontas, falls for a murderer of thousands of his countrymen as was John Smith? Or why witches are always bad? Or why women are always in the background in these films (Hubka, Hovdestad & Tonmyr, 2009)? The world of Disney Princess began in 1937 when Snow White entered the world with the Seven Dwarfs (McRobbie, 2008). Since then it continued to add princesses in this world and the most recent movie was Tangled (Rapunzel) in 2011. In the past years, due to the lack of portraying ethnicity, Disney movie makers were highly criticized by their audience. Therefore, Pocahontas appeared in 1995 and after three years in 1998 came Mulan, which created a racially diverse collection of Disney princesses. After a decade The Princess and the Frog was released in 2009. It is important to understand that Disney plays an important...

Character List aleeka Madison M - John-John - Charlese Jones / Char - Momma / Mrs. Madison (Maleeka’s mother) - Miss Saunders - Caleb 2. Character My favourite character is Maleeka Madison, who is the main character in the text. In my opinion, Maleeka is my favourite character in the book because of her personality. Throughout the story, the reader can obviously see the changes in Maleeka as she grows in the book. She starts off insecure, with very low self-esteem, but in the end, she comes out on top feeling confident in herself, and I really enjoyed seeing that. 3. Plot Maleeka is a new student at McClenton Middle School, this school isn’t used to seeing dark skinned people like Maleeka, so they just simply tease her. The two biggest bullies in the school, John-John and Char, constantly tease Maleeka. Upon all this bullying, Maleeka’s father recently died, and that’s a problem because he was the main money provider. So when he died, Maleeka’s mother had to make clothes for Maleeka instead of buy them, which didn’t help with what was going on at school. makes Maleeka do Char things that she doesn't want to do and Miss Saunders, the new homeroom teacher tries to help Maleeka, but she doesn't want any help, she thinks Char can protect her if she does homework for her. Maleeka made a mistake when Char and her “sidekicks” Raina and Rise,...

...Fragments, Run-ons and Comma Splices Getting Rid of Fragments There are two kinds of clauses – independent and dependent. A dependent clause has a subject and verb just like an independent clause, but it can’t stand alone because it begins with a dependent word such as after that, so that although, though unless as, as if until because what, whatever before when, whenever even though where, wherever how whether if, even if which, whichever in order that while since who, whom than whose Whenever a clause begins with one of the above dependent words, it is dependent. If we take an independent clause such as We finished the game. and put one of the dependent words in front of it, it becomes dependent: After we finished the game Although we finished the game As we finished the game Before we finished the game If we finished the game Since we finished the game That we finished the game When we finished the game While we finished the game The clause can no longer stand alone. It does not make a complete statement. It leaves the reader expecting something more. It is a fragment and must not be punctuated as a sentence. Any group of words that does not have a subject and a verb is also a fragment. Paid no attention to his parents (no subject) Joe thinking of all his problems (no adequate verb) Speeding along the highway (no subject and no adequate verb) The announcement...

Gi Bill, How the Affects Changed a Nation

...The GI Bill: How the Affects Changed a Nation For over six decades the GI Bill has been a staple for education in the United States for military and the veterans who have defended its citizens and country. So, why was the GI Bill (Servicemen’s Readjustment Act) established? The events in World War II would play an integral role in the outcome and stability of this military educational reform legislation. In 1944, World War II changed the face of the world. Many families were left to “fend” for themselves to prevent their stagnation and fears that their loved may not return home from war. Many that served in the war, as young as ages 17 and 18, were placed into regiments encompassed from Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, spanning all the way across the Pacific Ocean into Japan. As the war drew down and troops began to return to the states, many concerns were raised by the government that individuals looking for work could potentially impact the U.S. economy. Although the reasoning for the GI Bill was in fact an actual ploy to offer a way to infer the immense and already growing number of “veterans” [returning home from] “World War II” (Greenberg 2008). The United States government expressed further “political…fear” of a “sudden” influx of “nearly 16 million veterans” (Greenberg 2008). As the years progressed, through the Vietnam and Korean Wars, it became more evident that the GI Bill would maintain its use to educate and in part influence economic reform. During the...

Book Report of Martin Eden

...The Vanishing Love -----Book report of Martin Eden * The Introduction of Marin Eden Martin Eden, semiautobiographical novel by Jack London, published in 1909. The title character, Martin Eden, becomes a writer, hoping to acquire the respectability sought by his society-girl sweetheart, Ruth Morse. She spurns him, however, when his writing is rejected by several magazines and when he is falsely accused of being a socialist. Interestingly, Ruth tries to win him back after he achieves fame, but Eden realizes her love for him but not for the fame and fortune is false. Financially successful and robbed of connection to his own class, aware that his quest for bourgeois respectability was hollow, and devastated by the suicide of his mentor, Eden travels to the South Seas, where he jumps from the ship and drowns. So, the whole story is ended up with Martin’s suicide. The reason why I said that Martin Eden is another Jack London, or the book is a semiautobiographical novel, is that when Jack London wrote Martin Eden at age 33, he had already achieved international acclaim with The Call of the Wild, The Sea-Wolf and White Fang. However, London quickly became disillusioned with his fame and set sail through the South Pacific on a self-designed ketch called the Snark. On the grueling two-year voyage—as he struggled with tiredness and bowel diseases—he wrote Martin Eden, filling its pages with his frustrations, adolescent gang fights and struggles for artistic recognition. The character...
