Over 50% of teenagers nowadays receive online messages from random strangers they have never seen before. In fact, most of those teens that do run into these strangers do not tell an adult about it either. There are many pedophiles and predators online that can be a threat to teens and kids. Harlan Coben believes says that spyware can help parents aid their teens from the dangers of the internet. He thinks that spyware should be used to a certain extend, and it shouldn’t be used to be nosy. I agree with Coben that parents should monitor their kids to help protect them from harm’s way, but they should do it to a certain degree. The advancement of technology in today’s world requires spyware to help a child. In Harlan Coben’s article, “The Undercover Parent”, Coben says, “Trust is one thing, but surrendering parental responsibility to a machine that allows the entire world access to your home borders on negligence,” (Coben, 1). This means that with new tech, there needs to be watchful eyes around. With the pushes of technology in today’s world, many …show more content…
In “Big Brother meets Big Mother,” Ellen Goodman tells her thoughts about parents of this age monitoring their kids. Goodman says, “Those much-vaunted helicopter parents are turning into black-helicopter parents,”(Goodman, 1). This suggests that parents are turning into nosy spies just to watch their children and monitor what they do. Goodman tries to explain that parents will break their bond with their children. In reality, parents watch their kids with spyware for their own benefit. Coben says, “First, we’ve all read about the young boy unknowingly conversing with a pedophile or a girl who was cyber bullied to the point where she committed suicide. Would a watchful eye have helped?” (Coben, 1). Parents could help their children if they are in any trouble, and spyware is important to help know if they are in

Harlan Coben The Undercover Parent

...In Harlan Coben’s essay, “The Undercover Parent,” he makes a case that justifies the use of spyware by parents to monitor their children’s computer usage. His essay is put together well, and he makes his case effectively to the reader. Examples of this can be seen in how he acknowledges the arguments that those against his opinion may make, and he does his best to prove them wrong. His use of organization, seen in how he gets the reader hooked in the first paragraph, goes through his counter arguments in the body, and provides examples throughout that prove to the reader this is an effective method, flow well with one another. By using anecdotes of friends who have used this method, he gives reassurance to the reader that spyware is truly a helpful tool that parents should use, but this method falls a little short. However, as well written as this essay is, many people, myself included, will still find themselves disagreeing with Coben, such as myself. In analyzing his essay, one can see that he makes his case well, through his use of organization, counter arguments, and anecdotes - however this may not be enough to convince the reader...

Summary Of The Undercover Parent By Harlan Coben

...Should parents put spyware on their kids computer? The article “The Undercover Parent,” by Harlan Coben states that parents should put spyware on their kids computer. I agree with Coben’s opinion because parents should have the ability to monitor their kids online. The reason why I agree with Coben’s statement is because parents that put spyware on their son or daughter computer can prevent online risks. For example, if you put spyware on your computer you can have the ability to to log in every keystone on your child’s computer. Spyware helps parents spy on their kids by checking on online sites they are on. Putting spyware on your child’s computer can help you become a protected parent because you will be able to watch over your son...

...Kathryn Constantino Mr. Contreras Eng. 9HP/P.6 19 November 2015 “The Undercover Parent” Essay Harlan Coben in the article “The Undercover Parent” (2008) suggests that parents should monitor their children closely online. Coben supports his suggestion by listing the many dangers on the internet. Coben suggests that parents should install spyware on their child’s internet in order to keep them safe. The author writes in an informal tone for parents. Indeed, parents should monitor children closely online by using spyware because they can see if their child is in danger and they can help prevent their child getting in danger. Parents should monitor their children online because they can see if their child is in any kind of danger. For example, Coben states in his article “The Undercover Parent”, “One friend of mine, using spyware to monitor his college bound, straight-A daughter, found out that not only was she using drugs but she was sleeping with her dealer…. He decided to come clean, to let her know how he had found out, to speak with her about the dangers inherent in her behavior” (Coben, Paragraph 13). The example shows how a father used spyware to find out if his daughter was in danger, which she was in, the father then had a conversation with his daughter to tell her that the things she was doing online was very dangerous. The father prevented his daughter from getting into even more danger on the internet by using spyware. Since the father talked to his daughter, she...

Therefore, a parent has the right to monitor you kid. She states that as a parent you have the responsibility to monitor your children and keeping them safe.”Trust is one thing, but surrendering parental responsibility to a machine that allows the entire world access to your home borders on negligence” this quote implies that parents who believe that the internet is a safe place they are neglecting their parental duties. In addition a agree with Coben’s argument that spyware is a way to protect your children. I believe that parents should use spyware on their children’s computer only for the sole purpose of keeping their children safe. There are many disadvantages that the internet can have on your children’s life. Also, there is no reason for your child to hide anything from you. Parents have the right to monitor their kids if they feel like they are in danger. If the parents action is in the right state of mind then they are doing what a responsible parent would do. For example, ”One friend of mine, using spyware to monitor his college-bound straight -A daughter, found out that not only was she using drugs but she was sleeping with her dealer.” The dad was aware of the situation his daughter has been in and confronted her to talk out the situation. The first reason why I believe that parents should...
