Through the Windows I take her by the arm and walk her across the hallway to her bedroom as quiet as I can. I nudge her in and shut the door halfway. “On the bed,” I tell her. She obeys while I start rummaging through all the drawers, making sure Perry didn’t miss anything, looking for something. But nothing. Nothing but a lousy damn class ring. “Damn it.” I glance up at the wall in front of me. There’s all these award ribbons and pictures of her on a horse. Pictures of her with this boy. “Sir?” I turn around. She’s trying not to cry. I can tell. She’s looking down at her own sheets. “Why are you doing this?” “I want to.” “But why do you want to? We’ve never done anything to you or the other man. We don’t deserve this, especially not my father.” I make my way towards her bed. She stares up at me like a doe in headlights for a second before looking back down. I sit on the edge of the bed, resting the gun against it behind me. I search her face a while before answering. “I don’t know,” I tell her. “I really don’t. I know . . . that it’s just what I’ve always had the urge to do.” “Why?” She makes eye contact again, this time really looking into my eyes. “I guess it has to do with my parents. I never had parents, see. Been an orphan all my life. I lived in this old, cold, run-down orphanage downtown where I grew up. No one ever loved me there. There was so many of us they couldn’t love nobody. Just make sure we weren’t dying of starvation.” She’s listening now. And the look on her face has changed. She believes me. She feels sorry for me. I try to hide a smile, but I can’t help smiling a little. She has no idea what I want. What I’m going to do. “And then when I was thirteen,” I go on, “my big sister came and got me. I hadn’t seen her since I was five or six and she was eighteen. She left the orphanage when she was eighteen and I didn’t see her...

Expect the Unexpected

...Expect the Unexpected Towards the end of my junior year in high school an unexpected event occurred that changed my life. During my P.E. class I was participating in a basketball related activity that led to me getting injured. When I first realized that I was injured my first reaction was to fall to the ground and hold on to the part of my body that was hurting. After doing so, I tried to stand up and walk but I couldn’t because I began to feel excruciating pains in my left ankle. When my friends and teacher saw me struggling to walk, they all came to help me and my teacher gave me a chair to sit in. When I sat down in the chair, my teacher began to examine my ankle. He told me to turn my ankle from left to right while asking me if doing any of these motions was painful. When he finished examining my ankle he went over to the main office to tell one of the secretaries to call my father. Finally my father arrived at my school and instead of taking me straight to the hospital he began to ask me multiple questions about how I got injured which made me really angry. Eventually, he realized I was upset me so he took me to the hospital. When we arrived at the hospital the woman at the front desk checked me in, gave me a wheelchair, and then told us that we had to sit in the waiting room until it was time for the doctor to examine me. When the doctor was ready to see me, my father pushed me into the examination room and the doctor began to ask me questions about my ankle.......

Brown COMM 215 May 10, 2013 Charlotte McInnisd Curtis, PhD Comcast Unexpected Lay-offs in 2011 Comcast unexpected layoffs in 2011 were a bad impact on several of my co-works. Imagine coming to work on a Monday morning not knowing that your life would be changed without any prior notice from that day forward. We were not aware of this layoffs and it caught us all by surprise. The layoff left over 30 of my co-workers without a job in 2011. Comcast unexpected lay-offs in 2011 impacted all of their employees lives. We learn about the unexpected layoff two weeks before the company transition from billing and repair to retention. At the beginning of the unexpected layoff, we were all scheduled a meeting with management. Each employee was e-mailed a certain date, time frame, and location to meet with management. When we all sat down to discuss the guidelines, procedures, and the process of the new department, we were all advised that we all had to submit a resume and an application to apply for the new position. The company decided to change our department from Billing and Repair to Retention. The management advised us to prepare an updated resume and to go online internally to apply for the new position. Blog Post

...TITLE: Turn That Frown Upside Down or (Good ole Lemons)--- which do you like better? DATE OF POST:: TIME OF POST: (either 8 AM or 12 PM- please reference your editorial calendar from training) AUTHOR: Liana E’Akels IMAGE or CONTENT: “When life hands you lemons make lemonade” is a common saying heard by many. Growing up I experienced many “lemons”, but I also learned many valuable lessons. The lemonade was always the fact that I was able to take away something positive from every experience and grow from it. Seeking the good in a bad situation has always been something I’ve used to pull through many struggles. Whenever things didn’t go as planned or the unexpected occurred I tried to turn it into a learning experience. Being negative never solves a problem but only makes it more difficult to endure. Surrounding oneself with positive energy and supporters also makes the lemonade even sweeter. When you dwell on a situation and make it an excuse for why you can’t do something you’re the only one holding yourself back. You don’t need sympathy to make it through hard times but empathy. These two words may seem similar but have very key differences. It is much like the saying “misery loves company”. Those that are sympathetic are essentially helping you dwell in misery, while those empathetic try to understand your situation, but also help you realize you have to push through it and move on. Instead of feeling sorry for myself when things took a wrong turn I......

Personal Statement : My Hero

...My father walked with such determination that he might as well have been wearing a red cape and tights. Sure, this is a common perception for most children, but my parents survived the 1973 Cambodian genocide and have managed to provide a life for which my siblings and I will be forever grateful. When life got the best of me, my father always knew what to do and still does. As cliché as it is, he is my superhero. His catch phrase: “There’s always someone out there that views your life as a heaven.” Admittedly, this often went in one ear and out the next, but without it, I wouldn’t have been able to bear the unexpected. During my freshman year of high school, my father was diagnosed with colon cancer. I remember being taken by surprise and developing an unexpected emptiness. I felt nothing. I was in denial. Despite the fact my mind went blank, I only remember wondering how anyone could view my life as anything remotely close to “a heaven.” My Friday nights were spent in waiting rooms as I flipped through outdated issues of Time Magazine; my eyes constantly shifted from pictures to passing nurses. Though I missed football games to attend sessions with my mom, the fidgeting of her hand in mine assured me that this was where I should be. I began missing my golf matches and eventually ended my participation. Though I was slightly disappointed, none of these events mattered because I realized my ability as an emotional rock for my family. My dad’s illness......

Casual Wear

...a similar fashion; the first eight lines of the poem distantly describe a female tourist and a male terrorist, not as people, but as statistics. It is only in the final two lines of the poem that Merrill injects any emotion into the work and connects the two seemingly unrelated individuals. In “Casual Wear,” Merrill uses contrasting viewpoints to convey both the resolution of the terrorist and the direness of the death of the tourist. Most of “Casual Wear” focuses on “your average tourist” and “your average terrorist;" it is not until the last two lines that the poem reveals, indirectly, that the terrorist is responsible for killing the woman, who is given the title, in the last two words of the poem, “wife” (Merrill 907). The unexpected outcome provides the reader with the fierce shock of reality on a personal level. Since the only name given to the woman is “wife” and the odds were “1 to 910 against her strolling past the Embassy,” the reader is given the impression that this is something that could happen to anyone, anywhere (Merrill 907). The shift in tone from detached to very personal provides the reader with the stark contrast between a generalized newscast and the very personal level on which people are affected by the events being covered. The events that make the news, however, have a different effect on different individuals, which Merrill suggests in the last two lines of “Casual Wear.” In line eleven, Merrill provides the outcome of the attack......

Operations Management

...Operations play a huge role in how a business is managed. It is very important to order enough supplies, because the business would not be able to operate properly. While ordering supplies, ordering more enough doesn’t hurt either. Having a higher supply than the anticipated demand allows a company to be prepared for the unexpected. As the old saying goes, “It’s better to be safe than sorry.” Another thing to consider is ordering in bulk. Ordering in bulk is great for items that doesn’t spoil quickly or doesn’t change very often. Also the unit price for the item decreases due to the high quantity of items ordered. Without having a good knowledge of the operations, a business would be hard to function or possibly inoperable. Special decisions are something to be considered from the start of opening to 5 years into the business. Whether you decide to purchase insurance allows to company to be ready for crisis. If an accident happens, insurance will help you pay for most of the damages instead you paying directly out the business account. Vertical integration and diversification is another decision to contemplate on. It may be cheaper to make complimentary items at your own workplace rather than outsourcing to another vendor. Also keeping up with the latest trends of the consumer world. If a business doesn’t offer what is popular with the market, a business may not last to long. Giving a survey to customers allows the business to understand what the customer wants. Many......

Unexpected Success, Unexpected Effects

...English 100, Section 6 Unexpected Success, Unexpected Effects In the profile “Rural Idaho Town Seeks to Turn Film’s Cult Status into Prosperity” by Laura Holson, she shows the impact that a movie can have on a town. The movie is Napoleon Dynamite, and the town is Preston, Idaho. Throughout this profile, Holson tells the reader about a Napoleon Dynamite festival held in the small Idaho town the movie was filmed in. Some examples are given as to the events held at the festival such as the Napoleon look-alike contest, or the tater tot eating contest. Many of these contests and activities help people bring out their so called, “inner Napoleon” (Holson 162). Holson is able to illustrate the impact the Napoleon Dynamite festival had on the town and the people of Preston, while organizing the piece effectively. One point that is addressed by Holson is how the town is affected by the Napoleon Dynamite festival. The title addresses this point when she says the “rural Idaho town” (Holson 161). After her short story about the festival, Holson immediately jumps into how the town is effected. Holson states that “more than 300 people traveled from as far away as California and Connecticut for the chance to embrace their own inner Napoleon” (Holson 162). She also gives another example of how a movie can impact a town. Holson mentions Field of Dreams, which turned a small town in Iowa to someplace that is visited by over 65,000 people a year. Holson continues to show how the...

Unexpected Fun

...Unexpected fun It was the summer of two-thousand and six, the best week of that year. Summer school would be out soon, I was looking forward to it since the beginning of the school year. My girlfriends and I had so many adventures planned for the summer; missing one would be like a mission on grand theft auto left uncompleted. One day, I arrive home from summer school angry at the world since my mom forgot about me at the bus stop. When I get home, I over hear her talking on the phone saying, “oh yes go ahead and reserve Dennis a plane ticket too.” Like if I was not angry enough, she decides for me that I am going on vacations to Mexico with my aunt and my cousins, for a whole month! I still remember how mad I was. I kept telling her “well mother your spending money on a plane ticket for nothing, because I’m not going.” Finally, they convinced me to go to Mexico with the promise that if I absolutely hated it, they would buy my plane ticket to return home. The first week there I couldn’t take it, it was the middle of summer and it was raining. We had nothing to do, all we did was sit in the room where we would sleep and look at each other. I decide that the next day I was going to call my parents. I bought a pre-paid card and I did just that. “Mom, I hate it here. You told me to try it out and I did.” Since they had promised me a plane ticket back home, I was convinced that soon I would be back in lovely California. Finally, it stopped raining and later that night......

Expecting the Unexpected

...Expecting the Unexpected Looking into a person’s personality there are surprises around every corner. I have learned to expect the unexpected when working on this assignment. I asked five friends to take the personality test, along with taking it myself, and the results did not turn out the way that I had expected. My friends, who I thought had an okay view on the world, really don’t think that it treats them fairly and the people who I thought were more aggressive than the rest scored lower than those who I thought to be less aggressive people. I also found myself a little surprised with how my scores turned out. Just when you think you have yourself figured out you learn something new. Though no matter what a piece of paper with a bunch of numbers on it tells you, how someone really acts cannot be deflected on a piece of paper. When setting up the game, it took a little bit of time to figure out how exactly to execute the game in a way that it would cover the vast verities of personalities that are spread among my group of friends. Sure, we have all played games together before, but not for the purpose of analyzing the way that my friends’ personalities fit into the way that they strategically play a game. So, I decided to take a normal card game, and add a twist to it. Phase 10 is a simple card game where the players go around in a circle and pick up and discard cards and the hope to complete the phase that is required before another player goes out. It is usually......
