The University of Dissension

...The University of Dissension Labor unions can help their members by negotiating collectively for wages and benefits that are often better than individuals could negotiate on their own. A worker would have little chance of success in going to an employer as asking for a pay raise simply because he couldn’t make ends meet. He would likely be fired on the spot, especially in the 19th century, for making such a demand and cutting into the employer’s profits. Unions, however, can make the same requests and have the benefit of representing the entire workforce, with a greater chance of success.   There are times when wages need to be raised to be equitable, but the power of the unions is that they can sometimes raise wages and benefits to unrealistically high levels. That is why, unions can guarantee neither the economic needs of wage and hour increases nor job satisfaction. Why even consider the possibility of unionization? When lower-level employees start to feel the weight of the rising economy demands, the lack of wages, hours, and job satisfaction – other options become more desirable. Unionization sounds like a great idea to the minimum wage employees who feel dissatisfied with perhaps taking on the responsibilities of employees who have left the company for better opportunities. However there are many reasons why a company should avoid joining a union. Unions present a great idea, but here are a few examples of why not to unionize: Unions cannot guarantee the economic......

...What steps would you take as a school administrator to resolve this issue and avoid unionization of the operator’s staff? Unions are formed by the employees as they are displeased by the conditions they work under and also the direction the company is leading the employee to. Certain steps can be taken in order to avoid the formation of unions with respect to the rules and regulations of the labor laws. Listening to your employees is one of the initial steps that can be taken in order to the detour the workers from forming unions. Steps can be as easy and simple as better conditions for work and also a better communication process. This step can easily be accomplished by easily setting up meetings on regular basis and listening to what the employees have to say. If required, a one on one meeting could also be set up for some dissatisfied workers. Once the problems are recognized, the next step is to find the best way to handle and resolve the problem. In the future meetings a list of all the changes that are possible to make and also that are not possible to make should be discussed with the employees. For the things that are not possible to change should have a legit reason for the employees to understand. Regular meetings with the employees are beneficial for employers too as they start to gain more respect. A feeling of empowerment can be felt within the employees as employee committees are established as they strengthen communication. Eventually the workers will...

Freud

...Freud's two half-brothers, Emmanuel and Philip, were almost the same age as his mother. Freud was younger than his nephew John, Emmanuel's son. This odd situation may have triggered Freud's interest on family dynamics, leading to his ulterior formulations on the Oedipus Complex. Freud's father, a Jewish wool merchant of modest means, moved the family to Leipzig, Germany in 1859, and then settled in Vienna, where Freud remained until 1938. When Freud was eight years old, he was reading Shakespeare, and, during his adolescence, the hearing of a lecture about Goethe's essay on nature impressed him very much. Having considered studying law previously, he decided instead on a career in medical research, beginning his studies at Vienna University in 1873. As a student, Freud began research work on the central nervous system, guided by Ernst von Brock, and qualified as doctor of medicine in 1881. He worked at the Theodor Meynert's Psychiatric Clinic for a year, and later studied with Charcot, at the Salpetriure, in Paris. From 1884 to 1887 Freud published several articles on cocaine. He married Martha Bernays in 1886. The couple had six children (Mathilde, 1887; Jean-Martin, 1889; Olivier, 1891; Ernst, 1892; Sophie, 1893; Anna, 1895). He established a private practice, specializing in nervous disorders. His interest in hysteria was stimulated by Breuer's and Charcot's use of hypnotherapy. Freud moved to a flat in Berggasse, which turned into The Freud Museum Vienna......

It was a battle for which he was “prepared to die for,” a struggle against not only white domination but also black domination.[1] However, as the apartheid era drew to a close, Mandela’s crusade for a democratic “rainbow nation”[2] looked despairingly unattainable as South Africa came perilously close to descending into utter chaos. Nevertheless, Mandela, long time anti-apartheid activist and leader in the African National Congress (ANC), continued the struggle for his dream of a multicultural nation. Some have expressed the opinion that though the African National Congress was without a doubt......

Alexander the Great: the Quest to Be Greater

...Alexander the Great was a conqueror and King of Macedonia prior to the Hellenistic Period. He succeeded to the throne after Phillip II of Macedon’s death brought his reign to an end. However, the continuance of the promised legacy his father left behind did not satisfy this power crazed King for fame and glory. Alexander the Great’s resentment towards his father led him to continue conquering because he wanted to overshadow his father. Under his headship, his unification of Greek city-states led to one of the largest empires known today. Alexander was born in the summer of 356 B.C. to Phillip II King of Macedon and Olympias of Epirus. Born into a royal household with a great military leader as the head of it, Alexander spent most of his early childhood watching a distant father transform Macedonia. Alexander was always left behind for his father’s military conquests and expansion. “Whenever he heard of Philip's having taken some city or won some famous victory, he used to look unhappy at the news, and would say to his friends, "Boys, my father will forestall us in everything; he will leave no great exploits for you and me to achieve." Indeed, he cared nothing for pleasure or wealth, but only for honour and glory; and he imagined that the more territory he inherited from his father, the less would be left for him to conquer.” Alexander realized that his father’s absence meant that he was out conquering ("Plutrach Lives: The Life of Alexander" p. 304). This led to tension......

Socrates on the Equality of Women

...Osarume West-Idahosa ( 1494075) Professor Martin Black Government 282 March 29, 2013 Critical Analysis In book V of Plato’s Republic Socrates defends the proposal that women should be eligible to serve as guardians in the city and should equally be entitled to receive equal training and education , necessary for the task, along sides men in the city. Socrates strongly believes that women are inherently capable of performing the same tasks as men, but accepts that they may be inferior in performing these tasks (455c). In his proposal, he states that since similar roles in the city require similar training and education whatever is good for the male should equally also good for the female. The distinction between virtues is non-existent as both sexes have the innate ability to function effectively in the society, when speaking in regards to knowledge and the different parts of the soul i.e ( reason, appetite, spirit). Here Socrates holds that individual should be judjed based on the virtue of their souls, and not mere physical appearance . a mans virtue is not brought about by his sex, virtue remains virtue regardless of a mans gender, socrates holds this postion due to this the best state must provide women the opportunity to govern. Socrates holds that role playing in this new just city should be equal in order for there to be unity and peaceful co-existence amongst the citizens. If a woman......

Strategic Planning Concepts

...Strategic Planning Concepts 1 Running head: STRATEGIC PLANNING CONCEPTS Strategic Planning Concepts STAN R. KEY Bethel University Kathy Vest MOD 440 Strategic Planning 6/23/2011 Strategic Planning Concepts 2 Strategic Planning Concepts Organizations from all over the world have one thing in common: competition. In order for organizations to compete in today’s marketplace they have to have a plan of action or strategy. Strategic planning refers to a process which defines an organization’s plan to effectively allocate its available resources (Strategic Planning Performance, 2011). A strategic plan is not the same as a business plan. A business plan tells how and why the company’s products or services will garner revenues. A strategic plan identifies the objectives, goals, direction, and opportunities within an organization and how to go about executing them. Different Forms of Planning A strategic plan must be realistic, attainable, feasible, and flexible. A company’s strategy is the game plan management is using to stake out a market position, conduct its operations, attract and please customers, compete successfully, and achieve organizational objectives (Bethel College, 2005). Having a competitive advantage in the marketplace is crucial to an organization’s success. Just to create a strategic plan does not mean that all is complete, it is only the beginning. It cannot be treated as a “cure all” for an organization, but needs to be treated as a viable......

...Black Feminism Michelle Smith African American History Winter Quarter 2010 Purdue University Instructor: Professor Wilkens Introduction When the Black Feminist movement was developed, it was a revolution for black women. It gave them power, liberation, and a voice to overcome the emasculating efforts of white male power (Harrold, Hine, and Hine, 2009). When I first began this research, I discovered that Black Feminism is too broad of a topic to elaborate on as a whole. This paper defines the term “Black Feminism. It will explore two published articles that report on the theory and practice of how black feminism is making waves and what role of education in the development of the Black Feminist Thought from 1860 to 1920.
