THE VARK GUIDE TO LEARNING STYLES
Learning styles refer to the ways and manner in which individuals absorb, comprehend, process and retain relevant information. Each person is unique, therefore people have various different ways in which they digest and process new information. The idea of individualized learning styles has gained a lot of recognition in education theory and classroom management strategy. In the year 1987, the educational theorist, Neil Fleming, came up with the VARK model of student learning. This VARK model has gained worldwide acclaim and even till date, is being used widely to categorize individuals and their preferred learning styles. VARK is an acronym for:
V- Visual, A- Aural, R- Read/Write, K- Kinesthetic
Visual learners make use of diagrams, videos, posters, slides, flowcharts, etc. in order to understand and process information. They learn better using their eyes. Aural learners utilize resources such as tape recorders, attending classes, group discussions, etc. to digest information. They learn using their ears. In other words, they are very good listeners. Read/write learners employ the services of textbooks, handouts, essays, glossaries etc. in their bid to get new information. They assimilate optimally through reading voraciously and writing. Kinesthetic learners enjoy making field trips, field tours, hands on approaches, exhibitions, etc. They can also be said to be ‘nature’ people because they learn better by demonstrating and actively participating in outings.
The writer of this paper, who will henceforth be referred to as Student D, filled a VARK questionnaire and had the following result:
