The Veldt Response

“The Veldt” is a short story that was written by Ray Bradbury in the 1950’s about a futuristic dystopia . The story was seemingly written as a message warning us about our society if technology continues to advance, and we continue to obsess and gravitate towards it. Through the short story, Bradbury was telling us that technology isn't necessarily a bad thing, but if it continues to progress and people of the society continue to become more obsessed and attached to it, it could ruin our society along with our relationships, and it could also make it impossible for us to live without it due to the significance of the role it plays in our everyday lives. “That sounds dreadful! Would I have to tie my own shoes instead of letting the shoe tier do it? And brush my own teeth and comb my hair and give myself a bath?”, is what Peter, George Hadley’s son, said when they talked about turning their Happylife Home, which is a house with many machines and mechanics that do everything that we do on a daily basis, off. In the society in the story, the people are so reliant on their technology and machines to do things for them that they cannot even imagine brushing their own …show more content…
The freedom of speech and the freedom of press have been demonstrated very strongly through not only words, but also through social media and television and news, which in some cases have been beneficial, but in others have been very harmful and destructive. Although I cannot control what the next person wants posts on their Instagram or blog, I can control what I put and say on my social media. I think that posting and spreading lies and rumors defeats the purpose of what social media was made to be. However, if technology does continue to advance, it is the responsibility of the people to not abuse it and to continue to hold on to their values, unlike those in “The

Comparing Ray Bradbury's The Veldt And In Advertising

...Ray Bradbury's ¨The Veldt” illustrates the parallels between emotional appeal in “The Veldt” and in advertising. In ¨The Veldt” the children develop a relationship with the nursery and makes them irrational through emotional appeal. The nursery in "The Veldt" is a very large room that displays interactive, immersive computer simulations that respond to and reflect the thoughts of the participants. But when the parents realize their children are developing a dangerous relationship with the room they turn off the room. The children's response is not pretty. “ The two children were in hysterics. They screamed and pranced and threw things. They yelled and sobbed and swore and jumped at the furniture. “ You can’t do that to the nursery, you can’t!” ( Bradbury 150)“ By looking at the way the children react to the nursery being taken away you can see their attachment to the nursery. If the children are in hysterics about a virtual reality room then what sort of emotional attachment must they place upon it? Emotional appeal can relate to the most primal instincts in our brain, especially needing a parent which is what the nursery does for the children. When the parents leave an emotional void by not parenting their children it is filled by the nursery. The emotions that the nursery produce for the kids make them act crazy when it is threatened....

The golden arches of Mcdonald’s are slowly becoming an integral part of the Indian landscapes. ...Ok. First, I just want to say that I think it is so cool that you guys have this awesome forum. I’ve never had a good reason to post in it before, but, well, I’m in Mr. McMurtry’s 10th grade honors English class (go me), and our half-year fiction project is due just before winter break, which is coming up. Ok. So, before you read this, you should know that I already asked Mr. McMurtry if I could write my fiction project in an experimental science fiction style and make lots of horrible, malicious, false, and hateful blood libels against the Mormons, and he asked what I had in mind, and I told him that I thought it could be cool to write a story that consisted entirely of a War between Mormons and Scientologists and Atheist Texan Cowboys in the Future, and he said that would be fine. I knew he’d let me do it, as his homosexuality is a well known fact to the student body, and therefore his concomitant openness to avant-guard art and literature and experimentation and stuff like that. Not like the other English teacher, Ms. Nichols, who is the sort of totally sexless spinster that makes her students write poems about Jesus, which I’m pretty sure is fucking illegal, although I’m sure nobody in this hick town cares. God and Football, all the way. Ok, so, then I didn’t do any work on it at all until last night. We had to do a one-page outline a few weeks ago, which is so stupid, so I did it on the bus and I have no idea what I wrote, so last night I just started over from scratch...

Work, Culture and Identity in Mozambique and Southafrica 1860-1910

...Acknowledgments ix Acknowledgments This book owes a great deal to the mental energy of several generations of scholars. As an undergraduate at the University of Cape Town, Francis Wilson made me aware of the importance of migrant labour and Robin Hallett inspired me, and a generation of students, to study the African past. At the School of Oriental and African Studies in London I was fortunate enough to have David Birmingham as a thesis supervisor. I hope that some of his knowledge and understanding of Lusophone Africa has found its way into this book. I owe an equal debt to Shula Marks who, over the years, has provided me with criticism and inspiration. In the United States I learnt a great deal from ]eanne Penvenne, Marcia Wright and, especially, Leroy Vail. In Switzerland I benefitted from the friendship and assistance of Laurent Monier of the IUED in Geneva, Francois Iecquier of the University of Lausanne and Mariette Ouwerhand of the dépurtement évangélrlyue (the former Swiss Mission). In South Africa, Patricia Davison of the South African Museum introduced me to material culture and made me aware of the richness of difference; the late Monica Wilson taught me the fundamentals of anthropology and Andrew Spiegel and Robert Thornton struggled to keep me abreast of changes in the discipline; Sue Newton-King and Nigel Penn brought shafts of light from the eighteenthcentury to bear on early industrialism. Charles van Onselen laid a major part of the intellectual foundations on...
